night cough problem

From last 2 weeks, my wife is suffering from this cough which starts around 7-9 pm at night. There is no sputum. She coughs some time few times in row and sometimes 5-10 minutes interval. It is there even at night time. Doctors seems to think it is asthama and perscribed few puffs for that but no help.

  • Has she undergone Allergy testing? My allergies tend to get worse at night with the post-nasal drip causing acute coughing spells (I also suffer allergy-induced mild asthma). While my Albuterol will open up the airways, it doesn't help with the underlying cause or the symptoms. If she hasn't been thru, or has no desire to go thru, allergy testing, perhaps an OTC allergy medication or allergy nasal spray and/or Guaifenesin will help. I, personally, have much better results with the generic 400mg Guaifenesin that may be taken every 4 hours, than the 12-hour, 600mg, Mucinex. If she can take decongestants (I can't due to MVP), she may even have better success with the DM version of the Guaifenesin and skip the allergy meds altogether. It's worth considering...
