Epidural Gone Wrong

Almost 2 years ago I had an epidural while in labor with my daughter. I immediately felt a sharp pain down my right lower side all the way down my leg. Nevertheless I was discharged assured that I was fine. By that evening i had such a severe headache I couldn't even roll out of bed. About a week later they finally figured out the epidural punctured my spinal fluid sack. Ever since I have suffered from neck pain that radiates all the way down my right arm and is sometimes so severe that i can't use my hand at all. Before this procedure I had a previous epidural but it never caused these symptoms. I need some insight as to what could possibly be wrong. I have had X-rays, CT Scan, MRI s . and they say its nothing or its muscle spasms. Could the puncture have caused muscle spasms so severe that 2 years later I still feel this terribly. HELP I AM OUT OF OPTIONS

  • I hate to be a harbinger of bad news, but as your problem obviously stems from a medical procedure (iatrogenic) doctors will automatically minimize, discount and deny the reality of your symptoms. It doesn't matter what procedure they do to cause injury, every doctor will prevaricate in diagnosing your problem. This is the standard mistreatment doctors invariably saddle on patients who have had the misfortune to be the victim of medical mistakes. I know, because I have been going through this for several years and have reports from hundreds of patients who have been through this frustrating nightmare. What makes it worse is the endless referrals to doctor after doctor, when they all say something different, act puzzled, prescribe worthless or dangerous drugs and physical therapy .. KNOWING all along the cause of your problem. I hope you do find some relief, but I doubt any doctor is going to give you the kind of examination and treatment you deserve. When a doctor injures you, you become the medical profession's leper..

HELP I AM OUT OF OPTIONSI too had this happen. I had a C-Section with my 2nd daughter and they let an assistant give me the epidural. The c-section went fine but afterwards I had severe neck pain and then in the same day I was soooo stiff I could not move from the neck down. I suffered for about 2 days and they said it was just a stiff neck but I have had a stiff neck before and I knew that was NOT the problem. After 2 days of pain and almost feeling paralized they finally told me that my spinal fluid had leaked out and they had to take blood from my arm and put it into my back. IT WAS TERRIBLE. Its been almost 6 yrs and I cannot sit too long nor can I stand too long in the same place. I have had trouble keeping a job because at most places you are either sitting or standing. I went to a few doctors and they said it is because I do not exercise enough. I admit I am not an athlete but I do walk alot as I have a dog and 2 children. I have taken pills, creams and nothing seams to really help. I have a sore back almost everyday and do not know what to do. Is it fixable?? What job would I be able to do? Do I have to go on disability and if so how do I get a doctor to admit that I REALLY do have a problem. Sooooo frustrating as they never even told me it was an assistant :(

HELP I AM OUT OF OPTIONSI suffered this too. I had a blood patch put in and it relieved the pain two days after I had my epidural. I had my daughter 6/13/08 and I am still suffering with problems from it. I have knots up and down my spine and they have spead to my neck. I hurt all the time and I am getting worse my platelet levels keep dropping lower each time and my wbc as well as other blood work do not make sense. I have been in the hospital and they give antibiotic through iv and then send me home. I feel your pain and understand. Doctors keep telling me that it must be some kind of muscle spasm. I have had all of the same tests as well. I am wondering what a ultrasound might find. At the hospital they were almost going to do a bone marrow test on me. They stopped because after one week in the hospital with iv antibiotics my labs got better temp. I wish I had an answer because I am suffering with it and do not wish it on anyone. I suffer from a horrible low immune system now. contact me at samanthasangelz@yahoo.com if you need to talk.

  • My Dad had an epidural for anoperation to remove part of his bowel dur to chronic diverticulutis. Doctos had misdiagnosed him for years - he had a perforated bowel, blood poisoning and the highest temp the hospital had seen, yet 2 days before the A & E Dept sent him home with 2 suppositories and 1 rubber glove?! Anyway, he was half awake when epidural was administered and heard - clearly, "Mr Hall, there's something wrong with that site, I think you've hit nerve". There was then a lot of panic and the needle was re-sited. He enquired as to what had went wrong and has been consistently told he "imagined"it. He has severe feeling loss and weakness down his legs and has had since the day that happened - 9 years ago - still hospital are lying and have refused follow-up investigation (to fix it only - not to enable us to sue!!) as they say he imagined it and old age is causing this. The NHS have done nothign to help him - any lesser a man would have died at their hands.

  • I am also still experiencing problems after my epidural. I had my daughter almost 10 months ago. After i received my epidural, I turned pale and sweaty. My Blood pressure dropped in half. I thought I was going to die. After awhile the nurses figured out it was the epidural and had the guy come back in and after I sat up and they took it out, I started getting better. After I came home after having her, I had an AWFUL headache. Could NOT stand up. Come to find out it was a spinal headache, my spinal fluid was leaking. So I got a blood patch. And yeah, it helped with the headaches, mostly. But even now I have HORRIBLE neck pain and stiffness. And it's getting worse. I've been dealing with it for almost 10 months now. I have been to the dr several times and she just blows if off as a weight issue.I don't see how that would affect my neck, and I'm not THAT over weight.
