herpes?

I recently went to my gyn. for a test on some open sores i had on my vaginal area and was diagnosed as herpes. The sores appeared about 3 months after unprotected sex. Although when the sores appear, I have no type of burning or itching before I encountered them. They start out as open sores and not as blisters or red bumps. I had another episode when I began my cycle about a two months later, with no symptoms of it being there until I felt it from the discomfort of my underwear touching it. It doesnt even burn when I urinate. Is this really herpes???
