Never ending cough

I am a 24 y/o 140lbs person that enjoyed, up to a year ago, excellent health. I eat well and exercise regularly, with no problems up until then. On the contrary - I was also almost never ill and only had a cold once a year, on average.

Then, a year ago, I started noticing two small changes:
Regular wounds like cut and scrapes started taking longer to heal.
I started suffering from fungal infections like "verruca plana" in the face and Athlete's foot fungus in the feet.
Then last month I caught a cold, nothing special. The big difference is that I am coughing for a month now (!), although my lungs are clear, I have no fever or other symptoms - just the cough (which alternated between "dry" and "wet" on a weekly basis) . According to the doc it is a regular throat infection. How come my body simply cannot defeat it?.

I have never had unprotected intercourse or blood transfusion in my life so that rules out That Illness...

My blood tests (including liver functions and other assorted counts) are all fine. My Doctors keep telling me I have nothing systematically wrong, but I wonder if my once excellent Immune system has gone wrong?

  • I've had a cough that they said the same thing. I have gone through so many cough medicines I should buy stock. I have started drinking more cranberry juice and I have been coughing less. Maybe it has just run its course or maybe the cranberry juice has helped. Hope you get relief. :o Katelyn

  • there are proper treatments for p.n.d. which do not involve snake oil cures like cranberry.they work .the sooner you get a proven cure the better. if you try to just live with this problem you may end up doing yourself permanent harm.

  • Keep looking. What other symptoms do you have? Have you had a CT scan of your chest? My friend had been coughing for over a year. He had some other symptoms as well. His Doctor was insisting it was either acid reflux or asthma. When both of those turned out negative, he did a chest CT as a last resort. Chest xrays had turned up nothing but the CT showed enlarged lymph nodes which turned out to be Sarcoidosis. It took almost a year to get that diagnosis.

  • After suffering from a never ending cough that I always thought was going to go away by itself (or by using cough medicine) I found this website and I really started getting worried. I have been coughing for a few months, sometimes very hard, sometimes softer, especially during the night. I drank 5 bottles of cough syrup (all brands) and took a lot of cough medicine and nothing. The symmptoms that I had were:never ending cough, bad especially at night ticklish throatnothing else apart from that. So I eventually got to a real doctor(the doctor in my campus health center cudn't see anything wrong with me), and he discovered that my left sinus is dripping. So I have post nasal drip. It's worse at night because Im lying down so the clogging cant be easily swallowen. He gave me antibiotic (amoxicillin), a nasal spray Rhinocort and an anti-allergic: Clarinex. HE said to take those for ten days and if the cough gets better and, after I stop taking them it comes back, he'll put me on a stronger anti-allergic drug like Claritin. Hope that helps. The advice Id give to someone who has had a cough for more than a few weeks: GO SEE A GOOD DOCTOR. If they say nothing is wrong, get a second opinion.

  • If the doctor at any point has given you anti-biotics, then you may have lost the ever important pro-biotics that occur naturally in your body. I would recommend eating yogurt and/or taking pro-biotic supplements. Also, I would recommend taking one or two tablespoons of Apple Cider Vinegar mixed with distilled water and honey to taste, as Apple Cider Vineger is wonderful at helping with virtually any ailement. And, if you have a sore throat in conjunction with the cough, gargle with a mixture of Apple Cider Vinegar and water every hour until it starts feeling better, then switch to every 3 hours until the sore throat is gone.

  • Have your doctor check for asthma. A few years ago the same thing happened to me. It was worse in the morning and at night. I'm on 2 inhalers and I'm doing alot better.

  • The numbers of parasite infected people are increasing, and are under diagnosed in the U.S., even for persons who do not travel out of the country. Parasites are easily transmitted via food, air, water, soil and pets. For example, roundworm (ascaris) has a continual 3-month cycle that results in a cough. Allergies to worm excretements or to other environmental allergins and chemicals can cause an unproductive cough--also consider TB. Find a physician who also practices travel medicine and will test for parasites and treat if positive. Clean your home of chemicals, dust, pollins, mildews, etc. and keep all busy hands away from your face. Eat healthy foods, sleep well, exercise outdoors in nature & keep a mentally healthy, spiritual connection with our Creator!

  • Try steam inhalers, humidifiers and Air purifiers. Both humidifiers and purifiers, run them with door closed, so that the moisture stays in the room.

  • Sometimes a never ending cough may be a type of asthma. If you take asthma medication such as becotide it may clear it up. Usually this type of cough occurs as a dry cough in the evening or a persistent cough which remains after a cold.

  • my 6yr old boy has a cough that comes and goes.we all have other symptoms of parasites but cannot find a dr. that seems interested enough to try to find which one.We have had blood and stool tests, exrays and all ending with no results.our symptoms are similiar to morgellon's disease but because of controversy no one takes it serious.Im not sure if what we have is bacterial or parasitic, but my son's lungs are weak already with slight asthma and i am worried it will get to a point of no return before we find a cure....When i take a wet tea bag and open it, rub the leafs on any part of my body i can see them come out of my skin...They are clear and hard to see and people are calling me crazy...bathing in vinegar, or (this sounds crazy), boiling potatoes and using the water from them in the bathtub seems to help, but i keep looking for someone to give me advice so that i can rid my children of this before it's too late.please help me save my children.....

  • I have had reoccurring coughs for years, so has my sister. By the time I was on my thrid one last year I cried at night I was so miserable. My sister finally saw a doctor who said she has small ariways that aggravate the throat so when you breath back in, you get that tickle and before you know it you are having a coughing attack. It aggravates the throat and seems to be a never ending cycle. He put her on an ashtma inhaler and it worked! I went to my doctor who gave me a reliever and within 1/2 a day I had stopped coughing. It gave my throat a chance to heal up and now I am cough free and have stopped the reliever. Thrilled!! Wish I had been told years ago, it was ruining my life!.

I was studying full time & would have to leave the class roomas I could cough upto 5mins & would sometimes gag. I had the flu for over a period of a month, I 'd have it for 3 days clear up, then two day's later get it again. It was very frustrating. I had flu like symptoms throughout the year along with the coughing. I was seeking alternative help, but nothing would help. Eventually I got a lung infection & ended up in hospital with a temp of 41 degrees. An x-ray showed black on the lungs which was a bacterial infection... pumped me with anti-biotics & let me go home. It was aweful but I got better. I recently have being diagonsed with IgA deficiency. Check it out as it took 4 yrs before it was diagonosed BUT I had it showing up in my blood tests but the Dr's didn't pick it up. Hope this may help with getting some answers! cheers A

  • It's the laundry soap, Gain, Tide, all of them. Something has changed or been added and its making people have a never ending cough, alternating between wet and dry. Switch to Free Clear by ALL or Baby Dreft.
