I was just wondering by an informal survey of this group...did anyone who has Fibromyalgia (or thinks they may have it) consume drinks like diet sodas or products with Aspartame( which is Nutrasweet or Equal, the blue stuff) as a sweetner. I was just wondering because I did consume Aspartame for about 20 years. I am now 43, and I havent touched the stuff, these artificial sweetners in a long time, but often wondered if they could have caused my Fibromyalgia. I have seen some articles talking about this and just wondered if anyone else saw the connection in their own experience. I do believe there could be a food connection or a connection to chemicals and additives to our food. There are so many with Fibromyalgia now including many young people and this is disconcerting. I have a friend whose young daughter drinks diet sodas and is have quite a bit of unexplained pain in her legs and other areas and her doctor thinks it might be Fibro. There must be some trigger in our environment causing this to affect so many people. And the fact that it is affecting mostly women is also something to think about. I honestly dont think enough medical research is being done on this. Probably because mostly women are affected and because it doesnt kill people.

  • HI, Yes, I was drinking diet sodas when I started all the strange symptoms. The docs thought I had MS, thats how bad I was after using it for just a few months!! But brain scan didn't show lesions, so they said it was Fibro.. I didn't know Aspartame was poison until it was too late . Do some google searches, they think its also the cause of the gulf war syndrome, because of the break downs with temp changes in the chemicals. They even slip the poison/Aspartame into kids vitamins and meds and juice drinks!!! It probably affects more women, cause we are the ones always on diets or watching weight.Or in todays world, women are overstressed , always doing more. I read everything now and make sure my kids aren't getting anything with that in it.

  • I drink diet sodas now sometimes, but my parents never let me drink diet when I was younger and I developed fibro years before I started drinking diet soda.

  • I was practically raised on soda, but had never used diet products until I was about 20. Now I use Stevia instead.

  • My doctor has been treating me for fibromyalgia for 6 years. Although he never utter that word to me. Had to read it in my chart and hear the specialists he sent me to say, "Well, your doctor will continue treating you for fibro." I have known that if I drink anything with aspertame or chew sugerless gum I get a migraine. I recently drank a lipton iced tea and couldn't walk hours later because my legs cramped up from the knee down. I am left wondering what is really going on. One specialist said fibro doesn't present itself that often below the waist??????? Young with two young boys and very frustrated with this agrgivating condition and with my heath care!!!!

  • Yes, I did, but only for a few months before I got sick. That was fourteen years ago. I continued to drink them for at least six more years. That was before there was any talk of such a thing affecting fibro patients. Four of those six years that I drank them, I handled my fibro just fine. It wasn't until I had back surgery that my fibro came back FULL FORCE!!. So who knows? Good luck on your research.

  • I drank diet Tonic with my gin every day for 20 years before I got Fibro. I continued to drink diest sodas for around 2 years into my diagnoses and then read something that made me stop drinking this. At first I got better, I celebrated and thought that it was the answer but then it came back. I don't take anything with artificial sweetners in it at all now but I am not convinced that diet plays any part at all with Fibro.

  • I actually drank regular soda when I was dx'd. A lot of it! I switched to diet probably about a year or so after I was dx;d with the FMS. We did not have soda in the house all the time as kids, but when we could get it we would drink a lot of it. As an adult I was addicted. I have heard a lot of bad thhings about diet sodea, but so much more about sugar that I weighed the odds to the diet soda. I know I 'm bad. :(

  • Absolutely! Infact, I would 1 or 2 packets of Equal in my coffee everyday, a packet in my morning cereal, and lots of Crystal Light - Weight Watchers says you can drink it instead of water, so I did! And, yes, I'm no addict, but I used to drink diet drinks too. I was diagnosed with Fibro. 3 years ago, and have mild symptoms for years!I used to try Stevia from the health food store, but it was terribly bitter and just wasn't worth it. But, now they have a commercial brand of Stevia called Truvia. I have been using that for only ONE MONTH and I'm not as "foggy". My joint pain is still there, but lightened some how. If there is truth that Aspartame has caused these symptoms, I'm sure it has done damage beyond repair for many!

  • I guess I'm the only anomoly here, I've never drank diet drinks and always avoided chemical sweeteners opting for good old sugar instead. I've never been a real sweet tooth though, and use stevia when I want to sweeten something. I do find it bitter sometimes, so I'll try truvia instead. I don't remember seeing it at the store but after reading these posts I'll look for it - thanks! I've had FM for 14 years and to this day I have no idea what caused it. We always tried to eat healthy but didn't know MSG was so bad until lately. I'm 49 now and I don't know how much MSG I've eaten in my life so far, I know it's in almost all of Campbell's soups though (we don't eat that anymore!)

  • I have consumed diet soda pops with Apartame (Nutrasweet) since a teen and I'm now 43 and 1+ years into my Fibro dx. My big concern is the PhenylKetonUrics. I know this has something to do with the nervous system because when a baby is born, they perform a PKU test (note capitalized letters) to determine if there is anything wrong with their nervous system. This is the reason I refused to drink diet anything while I was pregnant and nursing. I can't help but think that my Fibro dx is a misdiagnosis and that there are some side effects from the Phenylketonurics or Phenylalanine consumption that resembles Fibro. I'd love to see a full study or even a complete survey of those diagnosed with Fibro vs. diet drinkers. Obviously there are several of us with similar concerns. Coincidence?

  • This is very interesting.I had never heard of this connection. I drank diet soda for 25 years. The only reason I stopped was because I started drinking flavored water. I've been drinking this for 2 years. I was just diagnosed with fibro. this past month.

I wonder if there is a connection with artifical sweetners.I never use real sugar either. My sister is also diagnosed with this condition. I just turned 54,she is 57,and I have been in pain so long all the dr's I went to thought I was crazy. I'm so glad I found a dr. who told me what I have. I to am disabled since I have another condition called Madelung's Bone deformity. This also has to do with bones and muscles. I wish I wasn't alergic to morphine. So I have no isea what better meds I could have. I take percocet and it doesn't even phase the pain.I didn't get a diagnoses for 8 years so I lost the credit time to get disability. I go back to the dr. tuesday, this will be my 2nd visit. She sent me for alot of blood test and a ton of xrays, so I'll see what happens then.

  • I found this forum because yes, I do always wonder about it.I drank WAY too much diet soda - I mean, ok, I'd drink 2 2liters a day sometimes. I admit it - I worked in high tech and I had to have the caffiene. I gained weight - I went on Atkins and had to give up the soda. I expected the caffiene withdrawal. I had it. But after that lessened, I felt sick - like I had the flu. Like fibro feels on a severe day - but with headaches and extreme exhaustion and inability to think clearly. I WAS SO SICK. One day, about 3 weeks with no soda - I got the shakes. Now, I used to be an RN - I worked in alcohol and drug some - and I'm tellin ya - it looked like DTs to me! It scared me - I ran - RAN to the machine, got 2 diet sprites. Downed them. 10 minutes later, shakes got better then stopped. That is when I KNEW - I KNEW it was the nutrasweet. Now, I was dealing with a chronic ankle injury that took a turn for the worse at the same time, and a month or so later my mom died - but that IS the same time period I know the fibro set in.

  • 3 years ago my daughter started the South Beach Diet (which takes out carbs, not good) and was drinking 4-5 diet drinks (with Aspartame). 6 months later she was out of controll and was diagnosed with delutional disorder. Since then I've done alot of research on Aspartame in our food and drinks. By the way, it's not just in diet pop! It's also in vaccines, vitamins, and all kinds of foods that we wouldn't think it would be in. I think everyone should read "Aspartame - the shocking story of the world's best selling sweetener" and "Aspartame Poisoning". Aspartame is a neurotoxin, and what really upsets me is that the FDA is suppose to protect us from poison in our food, but instead was swayed by the lobbyists. Please read these articles, I had a perfectly normal child 3 years ago, now we have to see if we can get a neurologist to see her and, hopefully find a cure.

I believe diet pop caused my fibro, absolutely!!! When I made the connection I stopped aspartame because I noticed even chewing gum...all have aspartame nowadays...I would have an increase in pain. I have been off of it for awhile, started detox programs, used an "infrared'" sauna and I am now symptom free!!!Approx 4000 products have aspartame!!!
