Acute spasm of external ear?

My daughter, 12 y.o., has been complaining about occasional ear pain which she refers to as a "flick". Occurance is unpredictable, and fortunately the spasm as brief although intensely painful - enough to make her cry out, often with tears. It may occur at any time, day or night. Frequency of spasm is about once a week. Any suggestions as to what this might be, useful web sites, etc. would be much appreciated.
