what causes shooting pain in big toe?

just starting getting intense shooting pain in big toe about 10 times a day for no apparent reason. Lasts about 5 seconds and so intense I cant think of anything else for a moment. Happens randomly even when sleeping. I guess its a nerve problem as no swelling or anything apart from long time fungal infection under toenail. I am 72 and otherwise healthy.
I see others have the same problem but have not yet sighted a clear cause or treatment. Any suggestions?
