gum poking habit--why?

When under stress, I tend to poke at my gums; especially the areas between the teeth. It is not extreme or intensely harmful. But, I find it oddly pleasurable. It feels tingly and kind of nice. I've descovered on certain forums that many people also find it to be a good feeling. Some even describe it as euphoria or high. Some of these people participate in much more intense damage to their gums. But my poking habit is not often or eccessively dangerous. My question is why the feeling is so enjoyable? Scientific explainations would be preferred but not exclusively so.
