Just curious to what is currently IN and OUT these days on Temperature-Taking and if digital is best, and how many families/Households still use glass mercury? Also are ear readings to be trusted?

When one is complaining of fever and it is first checked orally, and the reading is faulty, then what is the best alternative method?
Also are underarm temps usually the alternative method for older children and adults?
