I continue to get a recurring earache combined with a sore throat. (When I swallow, I can feel teh pain go up to my ear through my eustacian tube). This has been going on for almost three months now. The first time, I went to the Dr who gave me a 10 day supply of antibiotics, my symptoms went away but within two days of completing them, it came back. I went back to the Dr. and he prescribed the same anti-biotics. The same thing happened. It went away and returned within days of finishing the anitbiotics. It continues to occur about every two weeks now. Sometimes switching from the right side to left and back. I finally went to an ear dr. who said he couldn't see an infection, but noticed I had thrush. He gave me medicine for that along with allergy medicine. I normallly take claritan, but it did seem to help, so He prescribed Zertec and also gave me samples of Allegra. Neither of which helped, As i am sitting here again with another earache which hurts when I swallow.

Can anyone give me some advice? I am starting to think it is all in my head. (no pun intended)

  • I am going thru the same thing right now.. I went to the doctor, he said it wasn't an ear infection it was prob. allergies, gave me a nasal steriod and Claritan D.. Well the sore throat sort of went away but the ear ache keeps switching from ear to ear. It hurts pretty bad when I swallow. I noticed taking 4 advil helps for a short time.. At night seems to be the worse if anyone else finds out what this is please let me know. Its been 2 weeks of pain now.

  • I have the same exact symptoms as the original poster - with the same doctor response (minus the thrush). It doesn't feel like allergies to me because there are no other symptoms usually associated with sinus allergies - and I know because I've had them as well.It is usually worse at night and I have actually figured out that the pain is greater at night if I have worked out in the morning. If anyone has any suggestions I'm certainly looking forward to hearing them.

  • Thrush is basically a yeast infection in your mouth/throat. You should go see your primary care physician and get it checked out. They will do a throat culture, and also might want to run some blood tests just to make sure nothing else is wrong. If it is Thrush, you will get a 10 day perscription of Diflucan. Hope this helps.

  • omg I and my sis in law and my daughter have the same exact thing - my sis in law has had it a week longer then me and my daughter a week less then me and were all going thru the same thing - weve taken everything under the sun and I have been to the doctor. My doc tested me for mono but said she suspected it to be viral and gave me nothing for it. This has been going on for over a month now and the only relief any of us get is taking 800mg of motrin - its not a normal sore ...its more like a feeling of throat closing on you ...like swelling ...and tongue being sore on whatever side it chooses to hurt on that day .....and the pain is not totally ever going totally going away ...its just sometimes tolerable. Pain shooting to my ears when I swallow. From my research on the net it seems alot of people have this and for long periods of time. Not to mention all over the country and some in England - and no doctor is coming up with anything .....noone is finding any relief either. An above mentioned poster said advil helped her ....and motrin helps me so does that not lead us to believe its inflammatory in nature?? It seems were all afflicted with some kind of crud ...I guess its going to be up to all of us to come up with ways to get over it.

  • Wow... I feel like I am in the twilight zone. I have these SAME EXACT symptoms. I feel like it's been going on for almost 6 months now. I have been getting a sore throat every few weeks, sometimes a fever, sometimes headaches and the most recent time I had the WORST ear infection known to man. I finally decided to go a doctor and they gave me a 10 day supply of antibiotics for the ear infection. I felt better until about 2 days after I stopped the antibiotics and my sore throat came back with a vengence. I have been taking 3-4 ibuprofen each morning just so that I can function through the pain. The pain in my throat seems to change sides, but (knock on wood) the ear pain hasn't yet returned. I have looked on the internet and considered maybe cat-scratch disease from my cat, or maybe some kind of STD, or even gastro layngeal reflux... but none of these match my symptoms like what I have read in this forum. Has anyone found out what is causing this?

  • Wow.. I have had the same thing for about a month and a half now. I let it go for three weeks untill i became semi deaf in one ear and went to the doctor. Prescribed antibiotics and sent me on my way. Four days after finishing the pills my ears are back where they started and my sore throat never fully went away. Anyone know whats up??? Sitting here in agonyP.S. If your planning on going on a plane trip take some allergy medication and bring LOTS of gum. The pressure on the way down is enough to incapacitate you for a few hours

    8 Surprising Facts About Cholesterol

Did you know that one in six US adults has high cholesterol?

  • First off I am thrilled to read all the previous posts and see that I am not the only one suffering from this. It is driving me crazy and I was beginning to question my sanity. But so far no one has mentioned being cured and that is kind of scary.Three months ago I got what I thought was an ear ache. I bought some over the counter drops to take care of it. They didn't work. The pain went from once a week to once every three days to every day to 24/7. And it is definitely worse at night. When the pain reached a debilitating level I went to an ear, nose and throat specialist who could not find anything wrong. He suggested I go to a Dentist which I did and discovered I needed a root canal. We both assumed this was causing the ear pain. After the root canal I took anti-biotics and the pain was gone for two weeks. Then it came back full force. I went back to the Dentist who took an x-ray and found nothing wrong. The ear, nose and throat Doctor gave me some Nasal sprays to try and told me to take Ibuprofen which had good results. But you cannot use Nasal sprays every day so when I stopped the pain came back. His guess was this is some kind of allergy which is why the Nasal Spray worked but my question is why has this lasted so long? Three months? How long can someone be allergic to whatever is causing this? I live in San Diego and we certainly have our allergy season. But how much longer will this last? Should I go to an allergist and get a shot? This is really the last thing I need to be dealing with right now. Thanks

Did you figure out what was wrong? i have an apt with the ent on the 12 but i cant wait im going crazy.I have had the "same" symptoms that the other posters have described. Sore throat that comes and goes every few days usually on one side of my throat into my ear. This has been going on for approximately 4 months and here is where I am on finding the culprit.1. Repeated use of antibiotics (which I was prescribed and took) can cause the good bacteria in one's gut to be wiped out. This can lead to all sorts of problems, not just ear/nose/throat difficulties. Try a Probiotic to replenish the good bacteria that was killed off by repeated antibiotic use. 2. Check the air quality of your living space. I did not realize that my crawl space of my home was getting wet every time we had more than an 1" of rain. Well, that water evaporates into my home and that equals poor air which CAN cause terrible sinus problems.3. Get a complete physical. Check the thyroid findings. I am determined to figure out the cause of my problems. Good luck on figuring out the root cause of yours.

  • I am currently experiencing the same exact thing...did anyone figure out the cause or cure for this yet?! It has been over a month now -- I took one round of antibiotics and felt like it was getting better then a couple days after I was done them the sore throat when swallowing and sore ear came back. It does switch sides on me daily and I find I am very sensitive to sound. I went back to the doc and she took a throat swab and I haven't heard back so I assume it isn't strep. I had someone suggest I have a sinus infection in my deep sinuses because it is mostly the roof of my mouth and ear that hurts. I am going back to the doc again tomorrow so I hope they can figure it out....let me know if any one has any suggestions..

  • Hey guys. I know, your in pain, and it is aweful. I am there myself, and do not know what is wrong, however I have found some relief through heating pads. Lots of heat. It probably isn't good for the inflamation, however, it really does ease the pain. There is something also called "candleing"....which is basically a candle type thing, that you stick in your ear, and light the end of it. The thing is designed specifically for ears, and allows the smoke to travel directly into the ear, pulling and drawing the fluid and pain out of the ear. That is also very helpful. THey can be found around where I live in health food stores. Hope this can be of help to someone.

  • I have the exact same symptoms, and have not gone to a doctor yet - let's see what other things there are in common;I live in CT.I flew 3 weeks ago, roundtrip, and came down with a chest cold/sneezing/coughing afterward - which has since cleared up on it's own. A couple of nights ago I was eating a sandwich on a roll, and I felt it kind of scrape that side of my throat. Within minutes, my ear and throat were killing me. I was perfectly fine before I ate.If I touch way back inside my mouth my ear hurts, if I stick a q-tip in my ear, my throat hurts. I do not suffer terribly from allergies, and it is not really the season here in CT.Anything sound familiar?? Help!!

  • I went to an ENT with the same symptoms. Earache and throat was achy rather than sore with it alternating sides after being on the Zpack for treating a sinus infection. My ears were not infected. He looked down my throat with a scope and saw severe esophogeal damage from acid reflux and inflammation to the left vocal chords, as well as TMJ. I am now on prescription generic named antacid that is taken 30 minutes before dinner. Ideally, I shouldn't eat 4 hours prior to bedtime but that doesn't always work out so I do my best. Regarding the TMJ, I have to make sure I don't clench my jaw during stressful times, can't chew gum, apply heat to the jaw and eat soft foods for 4 days to get the jaw nice and relaxed. My doctor was nice enough to inform me that he can't put TMJ for insurance purposes because they would consider that a dental problem. So he classified it under something else and I can't remember the terminology but it was something like an ear ache with unidentified cause. Hope this helps you all out.
