If anyone has experienced this or knows of someone who has, please share with me your information and findings! I claw myself in my sleep so bad sometimes that i bleed. I don't do it every night, maybe three times a month, but it scares me. I WAKE UP AND MY NAILS ARE DEEP IN MY SKIN! PLEASE HELP! thanks!

  • I've never heard of anything like this, but since no one else has replied, I'll take a shot. Here's what occurs to me:It could be something akin to sleepwalking -- that is, what would normally be a waking, intentional activity that is instead happening during sleep. A neurologist would be the person to start with.In addition to (1), it could be an emotional disorder similar to self-cutting, or a compulsive disorder like trichophagia (compulsively eating hair). You'd want to see a psychiatrist or a psychotherapist who specializes in these problems. It could be a reaction to trauma. Have you experienced any trauma that you know of? Physical or sexual abuse, victim of a crime, witnessing a person injured or die in an especially horrible way? You didn't say how long you've been doing this, so in particular, did you experience any trauma shortly before it began? Memories of extreme trauma can be repressed, so even if you don't have any specific memories but a feeling that you might have experienced trauma, I'd see a psychotherapist who specializes in PTSD (post-traumatic stress disorder). If you have any other medical or emotional problems, this could be related to those. As a short-term solution, you could cut your nails short and/or wear gloves when you sleep. This sounds like a really tough problem. I sure do wish you well in finding a solution.

  • Thank you for your reply! I do see a neurologist for some medical problems that I have such as migraines and dandy walker syndrome, I am on 3 different pain meds for this , but i have not seen my Doc since this problem has begun! I will ask him and see if he can offer me any insight or solutions next time I go for a visit! No, I have not experienced any trauma latly, but have been under a great deal of stress! I am a mother of four young children, I babysit my 3 year old nephew, and I am a full time student in college. Maybe these are major contributing factors! Thank you again!

  • I just read about Dandy-Walker syndrome in Wikipedia. Wow. That's a new one on me. With those kinds of congenital neurological issues, plus a lot of life stress, I think your self-hurting has to be related.I'd suggest that you also look into alternative medical methods such as oriental medicine (accupuncture, herbs, chi gong, etc.), ayurveda, Bach Flower remedies, and NAET, a method for eliminating allergies to foods and environmental toxins. I don't know a lot about them, but after 15+ years during which a series of dozens of "regular" doctors failed to accurately diagnose the cause of my chronic fatigue, I've lost most of my faith in allopathic (mainstream Western) medicine, and am looking more into the alternative therapies. Many people claim benefits from of them that range from modest to stunning. I've had some minor benefits myself from aspects of oriental medicine, including accupuncture, herbs, and cupping. There are any number of sources on these alternative treatments, but you'll get a good start here by searching for posts by two users, acuann and Eatafruit78. They both seem to have a lot of knowledge and experience with these alternative methods, and they've both written many, many posts on this forum. Maybe one of their posts will have some relevance for you.My best wishes for your health!

  • Thanks again, I appreciate you taking the time to read and respond! I don't know to much about herbal remedies either but I will be looking into them because quite frankly, I am so sick of taking all of these pain meds. I am just to tired to function properly all of the time! Thanks again!

I have no idea why this happens and do not recall any dream that precedes it.I worry I will do it to my eyes next.Have you gotten any more information about your similar problem?

I just happen to google this and i found this forum. I too hurt myself unknowingly while i sleep. I will press my bottom teeth against my lower lip SO HARD that Im surprised they didnt go through my skin. And also I bend my wrists in unnatural, almost bending it backwards, positions against the mattress so hard while I sleep that it interferes with everyday activities. It HURTS!!! No violent history, no bad dreams, no drugs except Trazadone for sleep. I have no clue as to what could possibly cause this. Mine happens more often that yours at about 3 times per week. I have cuts, gashes under my lower lip inside my mouth and my wrists KILL ME! The weird part is that I will wake up and notice it, but I cant fall back to sleep unless I go back into the position I was in. My mouth mashed against my hand and my wrist bent backwards.

  • my 6 yo son was asleep and i walked in his room because i heard some strange noises. He pretty much had his whole hand in his mouth and it sounded like he was choking, or having a hard time breathing. i jerked his hand out and tried to wake him up, but he wouldnt wake up. I googled hand in mouth while asleep and found this site... i know its not exactly the same thing.......but does anyone know what this could be? I will mention this to his Dr next time we go, or if something else happens.

I'm thirteen as well and i've asked a friend of mine about it. She thinks that it may be because of stress, mental or physical. And it might also be because of some sort of medical problem you've had in the past. I gave myself a scar once and i'm really sore in the morning. Try talking to your parents about it. It might help.

  • well i have had this happen to me too except i had nail marks on my chin that cut the skin. as i could recall i had no dream about hurting myself but you are dreaming all of the time. even when you think your not dreaming, you actually are you just don't realize it.. mabey you are having dreams that cause you to do this to yourself. it is weird i tried looking up stuff like this too but it has only happened to me a few times so i don't really worry about it much.i have a question though that relates to nothing about this, but has anyone ever had something called an out of body experience? just a few nights ago i was dreaming of something that was very loud and then it was like a picture change to myself sleeping in my bed. i was watching myself sleep and when my alarm clock went off, i was in exactly the same position as i was when i woke up.. it doesn't seem scary but it actually was because it was a so quite it was scary! lol.. so had anyone experienced this before?

  • So, it isn't just me. Last week I woke up with quite a few cuts on my right hand, and a pretty deep one on my thumb. On Monday I woke up with a bunch of scratches the knuckles of my left hand. I don't remember what I was dreaming about the night before, but I sleep so close to the wall I figured maybe I had just been hitting it or something. But on Tuesday I woke up with a swollen black eye, and the night before I dreamt one of my friends told me to punch him in the face, so I did. And I hit him in the eye. And last night, I had a dream I saw some pregnant lady chain smoking and got very frustrated and upset so I punched her in the mouth after yelling at her, and I woke up this morning with a fat lip. I'm kind of freaking out about it, because I have no idea why it just started happening, and I'm afraid I'm going to end up hurting one of my roommates or something, which I would never want to do. I just don't want things to get worse

Hopefully she will, because this is still happening to me. But I haven't been remembering my dreams lately so it's starting to freak me out a little more :/
