Hi there... this is my first time on here... and I am hoping that someone can help me..... I have had a problem for around 12 years... I am always stuffed up.... I can hardly smell and almost half of the time I do not taste my food..... My doctor has given me flonase.... but it didnt help... then he said that he would send me to a ear nose and throat specialist... but he didnt.... and when I ask him he said that noone would look at me until I quit smoking... well I quit smoking 4 weeks ago... and I thought that things would get better.... because I truly think that I am allergic to smoke... but I am no better than I was before.... I have alot of phlem in my throat as well..... and everynight I go to bed with kleenex stuck up my nose... not a pretty sight... I dont know if my sinuses need to be drained ... or if I should demand another allergy test...as it has been years since my last test... and I was allergic to quite a few things way back then,,,,, any suggestions? thank you

  • Go get a neti pot and use this daily. It is fantastic and really helps clear you out, especially helping release the toxins from smoking! A neti pot takes a bit of time and patience at first, but if you can get into the habit of using it just like brushing your teeth I promise you will be amazed. Use non iodized table salt. NOT sea salt, as it burns. I think allergies are a real possibility. If you can find someone who specializes in NAET therapy it would really help. Google this for more info. Best wishes and try the neti pot!DOM

  • An ENT will look at you if you smoke or not!! Get into see one, you could have a polyup or another growth up in the sinuses blocking things so you feel stuffy all the time. The phlem could be from post nasal drip, or something different all togethter. Better let the ENT check you out.

  • for the stuffy nose i suggest Equate nasal four. My ent prescribed all kinds of nasal spray none worked. I went to wal mart and bought this cheap nasal spray and it cleared my nose for the first time in a long time.

  • Please do not listen to anything Shula or Acuann tell you. My sister just passed away because Shula and Acuann told her that her doctor was wrong and she did not have a serious condition. Acuann even told her to get acupuncture to get healed. These people are going to be investigated for practicing medicine without a license. Shula and Acuann are specifically wanted in connection with my sisters homocide. Thats right homocide. If she would have listened to her doctor instead of these internet quacks she would still be here today. Rest assured I will do everything in my power to put these two behind bars and shut this website down for good.

  • I have the same problem and I know it sucks! First of all, and ENT will see you if you smoke - I smoke and I went to an ENT and an allergy doctor. You need to demand he refer you!!! I hope it helps you better than it did me - mine gave me Flonase too (also didn't help me) and other meds that didn't help. Then I went to see and allergist that is still trying to help. If you find a solution, please let me know!!!

  • You have described precisely what I have had for the last 8 months. Eventually I got sick of dancing about the issues with NHS docs who hadn't a clue and paid to go privately. It was sinusitis and he prescribed me flixonase nasule drops. Worked wonders and I no longer have to take a sspare pillow case to bed with me due to constant nose running! As it went on for so long he said it's unlikely I will ever now be totally rid of it which isn't good news, but at least he has helped me start learning to control it.Arm yourself with info, go back, tell them all of this and if needs be go privately please!

  • hi..i have been suffering from this problem from past 2 yrs now...i also tired septhoplasty surgery but nothing worked. as of now I have a bit relief. I am giving u a list below try to follow it .1 QUIT SMOKING u might have already done tht but it takes time to recover. in ur nose and lungs there are small tiny hair like structures called cillia which is damaged by smoking. Cilia are responsible for controlling mucus generation and maintaining the proper viscosity of mucus. I was a smoker too. Somewhere down the line i always avoided the thought that smoking can be a reason for my problem .but at last i had to give up.2. STOP TAKING MEDICINESTrust me medicines will spoil u.in fact i have done a lot of research on this coz it has been a subject of my necessity from past 2 yrs.there are no medicines for allergies. even if there are. They can only provide u temporal relief. try to increase ur immunity.eat healthy.even if u want to take medicine ,rem they can help u only if u dnt smoke3. SALT IRRIGATIONdo it everyday4 .KNOW UR PROBLEM AND UNDERSTAND IT:allergies can categorized as 1 allergic rhinitis2.non allergic rhinitisallergic rhinitis: this is basically a allergic reaction caused by dust ,dander,molds..etc.....usually antihistamine are given for it.eg xyzal.they do control the reaction but if u continue with them at the end of the day ur immune system will be weak. and ur body will become dependent on them. try to avoid them....u can also consult an ent for thatnon allergic rhinitis: this is also known as Vasomotor rhinthis.this is not an allergy. but the symptoms exactly mimic allergy. in our nose we have nerves. due some triggers these nerves dilate and produce extra mucus .which creates problem.the most common trigger is Smoking. smoking can never coz allergy. it just an trigger. but a very powerful irritant.5.I REAPET >>>QUIT SMOKING .....FOR GOD SAKEno medicine will work’s condition will never improve will head towards asthma coz u already have a base for tht.in fact no doctor in this world can help u unless u quit. I have done this mistake..plz u don’t repeat it..MAY GOD BLESS U

  • Don't do nasal irrigation until you first see an ENT specialist. If you're nose is always dry, its only going to make it more dry with the saline. You may have a deviated septum or turbinate hypertrophy. You're situation sounds like mine. You will need to do a CT scan.

  • I had surgery for a so called deviated septum and it STILL didn't fix my stuffed up nose.I've been using that nasal four stuff for about 2 years and it's the only thing that works.Been on all sorts of prescription sprays and they did nothing. The only other time my nose has been clear in the last 10 years was after a doctor pulledone of those tubes with the camera out of my nose.. Oddly enough.

  • I know your solution, thank me later, my email is miltonluban@hotmail.com Trust me forget the ENT's I have tried them too many times as I once suffered the same as you are.Your problem is 100% allergies. Forget your Primary care DR, and your ENT. Go to a allergist! If you live in the New York area I have a great one, get tested to see if your allergic to anything, but in the mean time try a decongestion, over the counter, twice a day, and a sinus rinse, it uses saline water wash, twice a day, and get yourself over to the allergist ASAP. That's your solution! SO many people suffer from what you are! and they go to there primary Dr, the ENT and no one goes to the right DR which in this case is the allegist! So get going and see a good one!!!! It's always the last thing to do after they have suffered for so much time!

I think that if this doesn't help (which it hasn't) he'll fix my deviated septum to see if that fixes it. Flonase doesn't work for me. But that's the only prescription I've tried. Well, it works for maybe an hour and then im stuffed up again. I don't have post nasal drip or any runny sinuses, just stuffed up. Grr. I hope someday soon it'll be fixed. He ordered a CT scan on my sinuses and it showed my sinus cavities were fine.

  • Try getting off of all dairy for about a week or two and see if it helps. I'd been stuffy my entire adult life, and I took an advanced freediving class and the instructor insisted on no dairy (or soy, which they put in everything now) for 3 days before our dives (stuffed nasal cavities are terrible if you try to freedive down to 75 feet). All of a sudden I was much more open than usual, and I've since recommended eliminating dairy to 3 other friends with similar problems and they were impressed how within a week they could breathe better than they could remember. If you want to take it even further, look up an anti-inflammatory diet and try to stick to that. Acid forming foods and things we get way too much of like flour and gluten can cause inflammation.

  • Go to an acupunturist. It only took a few visits and my Aunt's issue went away for good. She had the same problem, and I do too. I am going to start going to one, as I have tried everything from allergy pills, sprays, prescriptions, neti pot, to oregano oil and other herbal remedies - with no success. I don't smoke, I eat extremely healthy (no processed foods or refined sugars and all organic), I exercise every day at least an hour, and have no allergies. It is very annoying.

  • Hi there,I have had a blocked nose for 11 years. I can't breathe through my nose only through my mouth which makes it really hard to sleep, i'm up most of the night due to my blocked nose. Not being able to smell sucks and not being able to taste my food is worse. I've been to the doctors so many times over the years and he only prescribes me nasal sprays that don't even work. Otrivine only partially unblocks my nose temporarily and no matter how much I blow my nose it's like the mucus is never ending and actually makes it worse. It's so bad that it feels like my nose is taped down with duct tape or something and it's getting hard to swallow now coz it's like it's all down my throat. So over this.......blocked nose

It takes a lot of time and trying many different things to figure out what works for you. I would start with nasal irrigation as suggested in this thread, which is an ancient and relatively safe practice. As I mentioned in another thread you can also use a modern and convenient spray like Sinox (http://sinoxspray.com/). As you do this regularly you will learn about your symptoms and how to manage them, and you can continue to try new experiments. Good luck, and let me know if you have any questions!

I use nose irrigation techniques at least twice a day. I also avoid irritants that trigger off sinus such as exhaust fumes, secondary smoke.Your problem maybe getting aggravated because you "don't have post nasal drip". Nasal irrigation should loosen the accumulated mucus in your nose and sinuses and make it easier to be expelled.Coincidentally I also use Sinox Nasal spray which the previous respondent has mentioned and I have found it to be very useful in treating Sinus. Nasal irrigation and preventive measures are what work for me.

  • I sympathize with constant stuffy nose, have had it for 20+ years, have had turbinates removed, allergy tests, etc. Google or other search VASOMOTOR RHINITIS, this may be your problem. Treatments are not real successful. I am going to try the daily flush with saline after reading messages above and discussing with medical people. Pseudophed helps in short term but not a permanent solution. Good luck to all you snarkers out there.
