Armour thyroid caused kidney infection

I know this sounds nuts but while taking Armour thyroid I developed a massiv e kidney infection and I know it was from the thyroid medicine. The first day I took it I noticed some pain in my lower back and started having leg cramps, by the second week the pain was unbearable and I went to the doctor. I had a kidney infection that had even spread into my blood stream. I went off the thyroid medicine for a while and then started it again and had the lower back pain & leg cramps again. I went on the thyroid medicine because I had symptoms of a thyroid disorder but all my thyroid tests were normal. I've had blood testing, x-rays & an abdominal ultrasound to see if there is another problem with my kidneys and everything has come back okay so far. My doctor thinks I'm wacko, but I know the thyroid medicine caused this. Any ideas on why this happened? Could I have an underlying condition that could have caused this? Any input would be greatly appreciated!

  • I have been dealing with the exact same thing since taking Armour Thyroid. I noticed when I took it that my urine smelled like rotten bacon or rotten wheat. After 1 month I got a recurring bladder/kidney infection. Now the infection is gone but the pain in my bladder and kidneys is horrible. I am now off of Amour but I fear that it did some damage.

  • Hi- Armour thyroid is not a laboratory made drug like synthroid. It is a natural glandular from the thyroids of pigs or cattle. If you have food allergies this might be a problem. Just ask for synthroid instead and say the other doesn't seem to agree with you. Doctors seem to dislike patients who are troubleshooting their own problems- at least that's my experience.

  • I am having back pain problem from last 6 months. some times it get severe and i can not sleep at night due to the pain. One of my friend suggested to check for kidney stone, and his doubt was true. I had around 2mm stones in both of the kidney. When i searched on the internet about this, i found article for symptoms that distinguishes backpain and pain due to kidney infection.

  • I think this happened to me. Have you found any more information?Wow! I had the same issue!! I had taken Synthyroid for 11yrs before my body stopped being able to process it.. that medication is 100% T4 and the body converts it to T3's. Anyway, I had horrible issues and a specialist found that I had no T3's. I began taking Armour and within 1 week I have had on going UTI's! I am a 34yr old woman who has never had a UTI in my life...till now. So, I completley agree, something is up. Unfortunatley, I have no other options now.
