Swelling under one eye

I have recently noticed swelling under my left eye. If it were both eyes, I would say it is fatigue/age (39) but it is a recent and seemingly abrupt change and only happening under my left eye. There is no discomfort or pain, but a larce circle is appearing under the eye and the tissue within the circle is slightly swollen. It is not very noticeable... yet. If it is age/fatigue, I can deal with that however unhappily, but I fear it is symptomatic of an actual health issue.

Does anyone have any idea what it could be or what I should do?

  • I also experience a periodic swelling under my left eye. It usually looks like a bug bite, appears quickly, and disappears within a few hours. Sometimes it expands to encompass the entire under-eye area. It never hurts or itches. It has happened at my home in Delaware, my dorm in North Carolina, and my boyfriend's apartment, so I can't imagine any environmental triggers. It happens at all times of the day, sometimes after I wake up. I have no idea what causes it either.

  • This has happend to me. Homeopathically this area relates to the Liver. So have Liver function tests done. Watch what you eat and drink especially any salty snacks and alcohol. I have been diagnosed with Haemochromatosis and also Gilberts Syndrome and in an attack from both of these I do notice that the swelling is more apparent.

  • Hi! I'm really nervous, but I don't know where to turn to...I woke up this morning to help my mother open the gate she could leave the house. After that I just walked right back into bed. That when I began rubbing my left eye over and over again; i couldn't take it anymore so I stood up and went to the mirror, that's when I saw it: my lower eye-lid swelled up and a huge line under it. I was stunned, scared, I rushed to the phone and called my mother. I tried putting some anti-biotics but it only made it painful, so I went and put an ice bag on my eye, it only went down a little bit. I'm worried, I don't know what it is, it doesn't look like an infection, but I'm afraid it COULD be contagious. (I have a meeting in a few hours)Just thought I'd also say that I had my Wisdom Teeth taken out on Thursday, and I was checking out other websites and, for some reason, one of them suggested that could be the cause. Any ideas?

Any ideas? After suffering from a lump under my right eye on numerous occasions finally realised it happened everytime I took a painkiller. The lump lasts for three days and looks horrible.Still trying to find out which painkillers cause it. Combiflam and dispirin definately cause it for me.

It has been going on for about a couple of weeks now, but not only does it happen to one side of the face it happens to the other eye as well. I will be taking him to the doctor tomorrow and find out what is going on if you find your answer before i do let me know. Hope you get well!

  • Last night I started rubbing my left eye and when I looked in the mirror my left under eye was all puffy like I was having an allergic reaction on one side of my face. I took an antihistamine right away and went to bed, but when I woke up it was the same. I am wondering if this condition relating to the liver would accompany any other symptoms?

  • ive had the same thing under my left eye only ive had it for 4 months and its progressivly got worse. Ive seen about 5 GPs , one dentist , one optician , had 2 courses of Augmentin , tried some cream for eczema and had an xray: none of them have any idea and nothings worked so far, really cant think of anything thats changed in the last few months to cause it im a final year student so its just been lots of studying day in day out. Did think it could be tiredness but then even when i do get some good nights sleep it still doesnt look any different. normally its worse and more swollen in the mornings.I think the next step is see a nose and throat specialist according to my GP Its just really annoying that i have to keep making appointments to do bits at a time rather than do a whole series of tests at once! thats the NHS for you!

  • I am a 20 yr old male who this happened to. The skin pimple with the swelling only under the left eye. Has anyone received results On the liver tests? How does the liver effect the eye? Is this known to be contageous? Thanks for your help. Btw, there is NO pain On the area at all, only a slight pain right when i started to notice the swelling. Reactine allergy medicine did not cure this.

  • I have the same problem!I'm 17 years old, dont drink, dont smoke or do anything like that. I noticed I had a big-ish red spot to the left (if you are looking to me) of my nose. I left it over night and in the morning it felt heavy. I looked in the mirror to see it got a tad bigger (that wasn't the problem though) I then saw under my left eye it was swollen and bumpy. It is a little notice able and just feels a bit weird. I've not had anything like it before so could it be something to do with my hay fever as I usually get it bad, but it I didn't take tablets or anything for it yesterday. I am a bit worried as it just appeared out of no where and looks odd.

  • I'm having the same problem as many of these people. I woke up yesterday with a little swollen lump under my right eye (by the inner tear duct). I just ignored it and hoped the swelling would go down, but when I woke up this morning it had spread to my entire under eye. Ice won't bring it down, it hurts when I touch it, it's making my eye close a bit more, and I have no idea what it is. I'm a 16 year old girl in pretty good health, I haven't taken any strange medications lately, and I have no allergies. I've been searching for an answer to this all day, so if someone could help it would really be appreciated!

  • In the last few weeks, I have been getting styes (sp?) every few days. For the last week or so I've been completely fine, but last night I noticed I was getting another one (it was just a tiny but sore lump right next to my tear duct, like always). I left it, expecting to wake up and it be the same, or get a head on it like they normally do, but instead I woke up and couldn't open my eye properly, it is so swollen my lower eyelid is pushing into my eye.I went straight to the doctor, who by the way failed to acknowledge how painful it is and poked it alot and shone a light into it, and he quickly said he wasn't sure, but that it seemed like a simple inflamed tear duct. He has prescribed me ten days worth of Augmentin, but told me to come in if it gets worse, or starts to go a bit gooey (both of which have happened).Has anyone figured out what this could be yet?It hurts to even blink!Thankyou x

I actually went to the doctor in Boston and they injected me with Steroids (which left me in pain). Right after the injection I could literally feel the swelling going down..it was soo weird but it was not preventative bc now it happens twice a week. Idk wat to do anymore!! Horrible!
