Hearing Voices out in the room when no one is there

I have had the experience of hearing people talking to me when I am alone and
their voices are not in my head but sound like they are out in the room.

Other people tell me they have heard voices that

were outside of them or in back of them and there was no one there.

What is a good medical explanation for this?

I have no medications or controlled substances and don't drink very much.
