Night chills - awakening every night between 2:00 and 5:00 so cold that I don't move out of a tight ball....it eventually passes - when I wake up my pillow and t-shirt are damp to wet. On Effexor, HRT, and Trazadone for several years now with no problems at all....not sure what is happening.

  • Hello. I was on the internet looking for something else and saw your post. I was on Effexor for 3+ years and had terrible night sweats while taking it. As soon as I stopped taking it, they went away completely. Though I weaned myself off of it very unlike what docs do. I broke open the capsules and gradually decreased the amount over 2-3 months. Was very difficult physically and emotionally but kept with it... Glad I got off that stuff! Hope my info helps! Take care!

  • I am 46. I get night chills almost every month right before my period. Two to three days. I haven't seen a doctor about it, but wanted you to know you're not alone. I'm pretty sure it's fluctuating hormones. =D I occassionally get them during my period, if my period is very heavy. I was also anemic, so I don't know if that's part of it. *shrug* It isn't bad enough for me to go to the doctor. (I don't like doctors LOL)

  • I had the worst "night chills" episode last night. I'm 49 years old and I guess "perimenopausal". I was so scared, that I was going to ask my husband to take me to the hospital. It lasted about an hour and I could not get warm! Needless to say, this morning I started spotting (I guess period). I will be going to my gyno soon and I'll as for something to ease these perimenopause symptoms because they're really scary.

  • ME TOO!!! Monday night I was wakened by what I describe as violent, uncontrollable shaking and chills. My teeth were chattering and my husband did all he could to cover me with blankets and rub my arms and legs. This went on and off til almost 5am! First experienced this a month into my pregnancy last year....they occurred about one-two times a month and lasted until about 2 months after I delivered....then disappeared! So, Surprise, I am 5 weeks pregnant again, and last night it was back! WHAT IS GOING ON??? My OB and PCP couldnt figure it out...I was tested for hormonal imbalance, thyroid conditions, low blood sugar, you name it and they had no answer. I am just thrilled that I am not alone in this. Now let's firgure this out, because our doctors don't seem to have the answer! Best Regards, Rebecca in Atlanta.

  • Hi, Searching the web to help my husband find out what is going on with his body. He has been having violent chills at night. Nothing can warm him, then they pass and he sweats so bad we have to change his clothes and bedding. They have been going on for about 4 months lasting 10 -15 min. two for three times a week. This week when it happened he could not breath so I called the ambulance. This one lasted 2 1/2 hours. They put him in the hospital and ran tons of test and could not find the reason. They discharged him with the diagnosis panic attack. He is always sound to sleep when this happens so I disagree. He is 65 years old and does have many health issues, but this is a new one. He also says he has a bad taste in his mouth after. can anyone help. He is afraid to go to sleep.

  • I just started to get the chills right before my period and sometimes in the middle of the month. I also get severe panick attacks. So I guess it could be the combination of hormonal changes and the attacks. I did do something that stopped it from getting worse. Yoga. I fought and fought myself when I started to feel the flu like chills comming on and I got up and started some Hatha yoga. It seemed as if it wasn't going away then a few minutes later it just passed. My body feels out of wack. Maybe light exercise will help.

  • Starts with a bad taste in my mouth, feeling lathargic, and severe chills usually late at night. I feel like I am going to have the flu. Chills last at least 4-6 hours. This all happens close to when my period is going to start, with in a week or so. At times I have felt this way after my period. I am 40 yrs. I also have anxiety attacks. My doc says I have anemia, and am malnurished. Could this be a lack of B Vits, could this be to much sugar intake. I read that sugar dampens the production of white blood cells in half. Last month just before my period I had the chill thing and had my blood drawn, both my red blood cells and white blood cells were low. Any of you experiencing any of this? I also went on a website called Naturopathic Medicine Network. There are a whole lot of blogs from ones just like us who are experiencing the same things. My Doctor has no idea what is going on and seems to take it lightly, so I am going to try and find a doc that will help me discover whats this is.Please help jen

  • I had chills, nightsweats, fatigue, sleep problems, stabbing pains, rashes, many other problems. Someone finally tested me for Lyme Disease, and it (western blot) came back positive for Lyme. Most websites (and doctors) have inadequate info about Lyme.

  • I'm 32, with 2 kids. I have bad night sweats 5/7 nights. My bed is soaked, like i've just got out of the bath, hair, body - drenched through. I sleep naked every night and not over weight. I sleep with a small window open too. The next day I feel very groggy & lethargic and very cold all day. I presumed it was hormonal, but after monitoring it for a couple of months there is absolutely no pattern to it. I went to the doctor, who just gave me some tablets without any particular interest in my symptoms. To be honest, I don't really want to take tablets if I don't know whats causing the sweating and the grogginess the following day. I do have daily problems with swollen neck glands, and have been referred to a ENT specialist next month.

  • I have recently started getting nigth chills followed by sweating. I have been diagnosed with panic attacks. My heart races and I can't breathe. Glad I am not alone in this. Wish I could help. • I very quickly scanned what most people said about theirviolent chills and I think you all are on to something. I have had severalof these episodes. But only on occasion and I am not keeping a record of when theyoccur. This happened to me last night and it seems bizarre to me. With me this occursquickly and the chills are so violent- it's like a seizure. I live alone and I try to reactfast. Covering in warm blankets and turn on a space heater in front of me. It feels likeit is a sudden drop in body temperature to me but I could not get an accurate temperaturelast night because your teeth do chatter! They are extremely violent chills. I have a lotof health problems but I am convinced in my own mind that this is either a hormonalissue. It's possible circulation but I have a lot of hormone problems and yes it is timefor my cycle. I finally decided to look on the internet for the first time today after my worst episode last night. Thank you for listening. Good Luck

  • I too am searching the net for any type of answer to my "night chills", I have had these for about 10 years now and never paid them any mind until last night, the attack was so intense that I couldnt make it out of bed to put on socks and clothes to get warm, my husband said my body was cold as an ice cube.... its almost like if I even thought of cold my body would intensly began to shiver.....I was shaking uncontrolably and my teeth were chattering..... and after about an hour, I was burning up and had to turn the heat down and not to mention I had a horrible headache... I am 5 mths pregnant, but have had these issues before even becoming pregnant..... Is there any reason for it, its really frustrating...

  • Same thing happens to me. I'm 30. Although it didn't happen at all in my first pregnancy (25 yrs). My second (28 yrs) it happened all the time, my doctor thought it might be related to a recurrent Urinary Track Infection that kept on relapsing. Now I am 10 weeks into my third Pregnancy and the chills are starting again. It happened once last week, and then every night for that last three nights. It usually only happens once a night but I am shaking so violently that I wake up my husband along with myself. I go to the doctor tomorrow, it is a new doc this time. It will be interesting to see if I have a UTI this time, or if it is just some crazy pregnancy symptom I've developed.

I find that if you increase your fiber or eat one or two of those probiotic yogerts (Activia) and make sure you pass stool before bed it tends to eliviate if not eliminate night sweats durring that time of the month and any odd occurrences in between.Don't eat 4 hours before bed and keep your drinks to just a sip of water when needed at night.

My doctor credits it too the infection on top of the preg hormones. But she really didn't know for sure - just kind of thought it was the way my body reacted, but didn't know why. And although she said she has heard of some strange and random symptoms, she agreed that this was one of the stranger things that she has heard.

  • I am on clonidine cozzar and mettformin I have also had these same exact night chills accompanied by sever teeth chattering sweating and shaking to the point where it is difficult to stand. I am convinced it is a combination and sensetivity to caffeine my blood pressure goes up and body temperature drops as soon as I take a clonidine ablot five to fifteen minutes later it goes away. I also have been diagonosed with panic attacks but I only get these when the amount of salt and caffeine are to high in the body. I am scared when this happens I had my worst eppisode about four days ago this one was accompanied by nausea and vommitting. I hope someone can give answers to these horrbile side effects it leaves me exhausted for the next day.

  • Hi, I just read your posts about the night chills. I too had the same problem a few times and found out it was an allergic reaction to Reactine. It was very scary when it happened and finally when I stopped taking this medication my chills stopped completely. So are any of you taking allergy meds? I know it seems funny to be allergic to an allergy pill but it has proven to be true. Good luck to all of you.

  • I also have been experiencing night chills. I will wake up out of a dead sleep and feel like ice water is running through my veins. It takes me a few minutes to warm up. I have narrowed the cause to diet soda. Each time I drink a diet soda, I can expect to have chills that night that wake me up, so I avoid them. However, last night I ate some breaded chicken patties for dinner and had the same reaction that night. I think it is a preservative that is in both diet soda and the chicken patties. I don't know what the chemical is doing to cause the chills, whether it lowers blood sugar or blood pressure.
