Hi I have been taking Levothyroxine for two years. My skin has developed dry scaly patches esp. on my face.
My bottom lip became chapped & flaky & is now feeling like a burn ...I have had it for over 6 months. It seems to improve & then for no reason flare up again. My GP gave me anti biotic ointment for it which didn't help. I've tried all sorts of lip creams even tried smoothing manuka honey on it.
Wondered if anyone could help in my search for a cure???

  • I was just wondering if you have tried using Aloe on it? It also sounds like a bad reaction to something you are taking or perhaps something you are not taking? I know that vitamin deficiencies can cause strange problems. For that reason, I always supplement with natural. Is it possible it could be caused from a secondary infection such as herpes? I realize this just poses more questions for you, but sometimes just talking about things can help. Good luck :-)

  • For the cheek rash I would try taking ZERTEC (anti-histamine) for a week and see if it improves. If it does, there is probably a food sensitivity trigger. For the mouth sore, if it is on the inside, avoid Sodium Lauryl Sulfate in your toothpaste and mouthwash. Xyliwhite toothpaste and mouthwash and Tom's of Maine lemon-lime mouthwash are easy on your gums. If the lip sore is on the outside, I would try Tea Tree Oil. After a few weeks on ARMOUR instead of SYNTHROID my cheek rash cleared up, and my food sensitivities abated.

  • Thanks for your reply.I cannot find Zertec to be able to buy it here in England. My face rash has cleared up on its own. My gp doesn't think the Levo & the lip condition is connected! He also doesn't feel the need to change my meds to Armour. There is a condition called cheilitis & i'm researching that. My lip just forms a crust which dries & feels like a burn. My lip won't bleed hence won't form a scab to heal! Thanks for your advice & did think the toothpaste could be the cause cos I have been using the whitening one.. Somewhere down the line I'm going to find the cause of this sore but I need peoples input in order to elimate or research different aspects of this annoying problem. Thanks once again.

Good luck :-) Hi Jonismith,Firstly thank you for taking the time to answer my thread.:) The elimation process ie bad reaction to something I am taking / not taking is a long drawn out affair!I am prone to lip cold sores but this doesn't blister but starts off as a split lip then crusts & peels off never really healing.I do have a dog which on occasion has licked me on the lips (kiss for mum!:p lol) I wondered if this caused the initial infection!!! I have used many products on my lip including aloe vera, tea tree oil, lavender oil, Zorivax, Cymex, chapstick, vaseline, manuka honey, lemon juice , Blistex & many others. I am going to try athletes foot cream, in case it is a fungal infection.Otherwise it could be lack of some vitamin....I do not eat fish for example.Don't know if there is a forum on lip problems on this site. Any more input would be appreciated.Wish I could put a picture up to show what it looked like on here! Thanks once again.Liz

  • Hi Liz,I was wondering if you've made any progress in determining/treating your lip? I have a similar condition that I've been battling for about 8 months now and I still have no idea what is causing it and how to make it go away.I was hoping that maybe you had some positive results that I could use!ThanksEllen

I was hoping that maybe you had some positive results that I could use! Thanks Ellen Hi Ellen,I've recently tried to bathe all the top rough skin off my lip so that I was left with a raw patch. I put athletes foot fungal cream on it!!!! It seemed to ease it for a few days. But after the initial healing it turned the split bit into a ulcer-like sore! This week I've been taking a multi-vitamin & cod liver oil capsules...I've put my normal night cream (Aldi's Q10 & retinol night cream) on my bottom lip...This seems to be healing it .....fingers crossed! But I've still got a very rough patch of skin right along the bottom lip... Don't won't to put lipstick on it just in case it flares up again!Sorry to be so long winded about all this but as you know it is a real pain . My Gp would probably tell me to use vaseline. But I really want to get to the bottom of it.....Let me know some more of your condition.Hope to hear from you soon.Liz

  • Hey Liz,Thanks for the quick response! My condition actually involves the border of my lips and skin around my lips. It seems to be similar to your condition in which the top layer of the skin never heals so its an open wound and it always oozes clear fluid (similar to when you the top layer of your skin is peeled off, exposing the moist underlayer)I've been to dermatologists which have prescribed me antibacterials, antifungals and steroid creams to put on it. The concensus right now seems to be that I'm allergic to something that my skin keeps on reacting to and the inflammation process is why it never heals. However, its frustrating because I've ruled out so many possible factors (such as toothpaste, cosmetic lip products, etc) and I have no idea what could possibly be causing this allergic reaction if it is indeed an allergy. Its just strange because its localized to the skin directly surround my lips. I have no known food allergies and I figured if it was my moisturizer or skin cream, it should affect the rest of my face also. Ever since this flared up, I have also stop using any type of lipstick or gloss and only put vaseline on my lips, so the culprit shouldn't be any of the chemicals that are commonly known to irritants to people with sensitivity to cosmetic lip products. It really is frustrating not being able to find the cause of this and it's also made me more self conscious unfortunately! I hope you're having better luck and let me know of any good news.!Ellen

Are you female? I had this for MONTHS when I was pregnant, and I still get it all the time!!! I hate it and nothing helps make it go away, but I found, oddly and simply that chapstick makes this overnight stuff in a tube that looks like blistex. I use it a LOT and it really keeps it wet enough to not burn and helps it close a little while it goes away on its own. Back to the yeast.. when I was pregnant, I considered the yeast, because I was "itchy" but had NO other symptoms of a yeast infection.. my doc prescribed me something for an infection.. I did it, although I had no symptoms, and lo and behold the lip healed IMMEDIATELY. You can have a yeast imbalance, male or female, and a treatment for it has worked for me in the past in healing the lip. Odd, but true. More than once it's the way to go for me. Good luck, and so sorry for you!

  • Sorry for only noticing it now, don't know if you still have this problem. My best friend's father had this problem with sores on the lips. We even took him to a specialist but all the treatments failed. So we tried a herbal treatment that is local in our country (Namibia). Note: I am the last person that believes in herbal treatments, but after he used this herbal mixture on his lips, it was cured within a week, and he is fine now.If you are interested let me know.

  • This may help but may not...a few years ago i had an injury to my upper lip. It was a result of an instrament used during surgery and a caused a small cut on upper lip. Drs felt it would heal. after a year of it starting to heal then reopen it got larger and was not really hurting. Finally during next TMJ surgery, the surgeon said he would remove some of the tissue and close it with sutures. After surgery he reassured me that it was nothing other than an unhealed wound. @ weeks later at my post op follow up, I was informed that all the residents and surgeons did not see any thing out of the ordinary so they just cleaned & sutured it. However, it turned out that the biopsy showed it was Basil Cell carcinoma...what a shock to them and to me....They told me they felt all was removed..lol...1 year later, another biopsy, i was told it was an infected stitch and all was ok...5 months ago, agin the lump was growing and slightly painful, another biopsy...dr. felt he had gone deep enough due to looks of the tissue he saw...low and behold...abnormal tissue..but not basil cell as this Dr. felt, but he said he didnt go deep enough...lump has returned and is tender . However after the last biopsy I was told next time they would have to remove my upper lip, due to the fact that the first biopsy correct margins used for removing Basil Cell were not used. Lol....What next...Please Remember....If you have an unhealed sore on your lip, as I did, Please DO NOT SMOKE...one reason is that basil cell can b causes by arsenic, and arsenic is in cigerettes!!!!I am a smoker..I did not know this but wish I did then....Good Luck to all who may have this Problem>Remember...tje tissue looked normal but finding told the true fact...

  • In the same boat. I've tried: niacinamide, magnesium oxide, external nail antifungal, vitamin c, biotin, peppermint, b multivitamins, L-lysine...Eating lots of oatmeal (w/ sugar) makes it worse.Niacinamide & the other antifungal makes the tissue burn like crazy, so I suspect it's yeast related. My tongue has white-ish patches. The Lysine helped the sores reduce & seems to have helped the most, except for the largest split in the middle is still healing, but the Lysine helped all the little sores scab over, over-night, which is much better than having open sores irritated by saliva. There are enzymes in the saliva that prevent scabbing. Actually my gums are sore too. I have not brushed in a while. I brush w/ only sea-salt (when I do brush), so I doubt it's allergies to tooth-paste for me. Improper dosing w/ ALA got this started. It needs to be dosed right and regularly, otherwise, it's admittedly dangerous & is well known to cause yeast/candida. Next I want to buy some vitamin E.I've been craving pumpkin pie, gingersnaps, cinnamin buns, pumpking muffins... that sort of thing. What sorts of food is everyone else w/ this craving?

  • Thanks for the helpful messages. My daughter also has a sore on the right corner of her lips. It's a little bit on the lip but mostly on the skin right next to where the lips meet.I've been giving her salt soakings.I put some water on a shallow plate and add a good amount of iodized salt. They seem to help but it comes back again. She had some brown spots on her skin last year and the doctor perscribed selsum blue. She used the shampoo when taking a shower, not on her hair but on her skin where the brown spots were. They were yeast growths and it went away in a few days.I'm thinking of putting a little selsum blue on her lip to see if that works.
