  • Ask your doctor about antihistamines. There are some that don't make you drowsy during the day. Also beware of the rebound effect of some nasal sprays.

  • antihistamines-good .so is sudafed if taken regularly at correct dosage.have you cleand and simplified your environment?how long since you had a new mattress?new pillows?is there an old carpet?an old dog?perhaps you have chronic sinusitis. the best way to find out needs your doctors cooperation, and several courses of high dose antibiotics.it may be worth trying to drain your sinuses the old fashioned way,by holding your head over a bowl ofhot water .your face needs to be horizontal for this to work.it can be spectacular.i once did it accidentally when i was a boy.no steam ,just reading a comic on the floor .what a surprising messthat was.and what a relief.you may need to take sudafed and something like cetirizene on a more or less permanent basis

  • Check your diet and cut out all dairy and sugar and see if you notice a change. Also, get tested for Candida as candida can cause chronic sinus problems. Try a neti pot to rinse your sinuses daily - with practice and regular use this helps tremendously. You can also try Dr. Neil Med's sinus rinse, found at any Walgreens. This takes some getting used to but helps open the sinus passages. Also, try acupuncture - it works wonderfully for asthma and upper respiratory problems. Doctor of Oriental Medicine

  • I had much of the same problems with allergies, asthma and using every antihistamine and nasal spray available - feels like your breathing through tiny drinking straws?? - stuffy all the time. Go see a specialist - an ear, nose and throat doctor (ent for short). It took me 30 years of suffering and continuing to go back to a general doctor before I made the switch. I ended up having sinus surgery (twice now) - all went well. After the first surgery they removed so much extra tissue I had in my sinuses I felt like I could breathe for the first time AND my severe allergies became very mild, almost nonexistent. It's called chronic sinusitis and you can take antibiotics and steroids but the problem will keep reoccuring. Another thing with the swallowing - have the ent check your tonsils. My sons were 75% obstructive and usually if the tonsils are enlarged, swallowing will be a problem, but the adenoids will also be enlarged (they are above the throat) and maybe causing your stuffiness. Hope you find any of this helpful.

  • I also have had a daily stuffy nose for over two decades now. My nose stuffs up and/or runs when I drink, eat, go outside or inside, etc. I went to several doctors, & they all gave me every nasal spray in the world, none of which worked. They kind of gave up on me & so I did my own research & found that I probably have a non-allergic condition in which the capillaries in my nasal passages swell up in response to heat/cold/stress or other things (unknown). This is NOT an allergy, so no wonder the allergy meds didn't work!I learned that there is no cure for this type of thing, although you may want to try (if you haven't already) a prescription nasal spray called Astelin, which treats for irritants as well as allergies. It didn't work for me, but maybe you'll have better luck. The only thing I can do is use over-the-counter nasal sprays, which are addicitve, but what else can I do?Good luck & I hope you find out what you have & how to fix it!

  • sinus surgery is not always necessary .everyone is not the same.antibiotics and decongestants, with antihystamines, fixed me up good, after sixty (yes)years of suffering, including(probably unnecessary, certainly ineffective )tonsillectomy and adenoidectomy at age four.what fun that was.i was carried into theatre by a man, (porter?)who draped me over his shoulder!now i am great, breathing properly for the first time in my life, and without the chronic cough that has plagued me,and cost me my teeth-two packs of cough sweets a day all my school and working life.-i am on a low dose maintenance regime now.thats all.wonderful!

  • I just wanted to say thank you for posting your stuffy nose issue. I have the same problem and I was begining to think I was going crazy. I am constantly feeling like I am breathing out of a small straw (as someone mentioned) and the pressure in my nose makes me constantly aware of it. I can't work out let alone cross the street without breathing through my mouth and turning red. I have tried allergy meds, seen all sorts of doctors (regular, ent, allergy), gotten xrays of my sinuses, etc. I really thought that I was nuts and it was "in my head". Thanks to everyone who posted as well, I think i'm going to go back to my dr. and be a little more aggressive about this as well as try some at home fixes - instead of just thinking that I will have to live the rest of my life feeling like I am lead around by my nose.

  • I would recommend seeing a good ENT (Ear, Nose and Throat) Dr. I had problems for years with terrible allergies, constant sinus infections, I could rarely breath out of my nose because it was always stuffed. I found an excellend Dr. and for 6 months she tried several medications first to see if we could resolve it through medications. It ended up that I had 5 different obstructions in my nose and nothing could get in our out of my nose and afer 6 months of still getting sinus infections I finally had surgery done. I can now breath and smell once again. I had no idea before that I wasn't smelling things and tasting things before either. What a difference it has made and I am getting less infections than before with less headache pain when I do get them. She did not remove all of the obstructions but just the ones that she thought would do the most good and it really has helped.Good Luck.

One night I happened to watched a TV show called "Is Your House Killing You?" and realised that I live in a poorly ventilated, damp house (mould), situated on a main road (dust) into the CBD. I also realised that when I cared for a sick relative in her own home close to the beach, all my symptoms disappeared. When I returned to my house, my sinus infections and migraines returned. I am now in the process of selling up and moving to the seaside. I hope this info is helpful for you.

I had similar symptoms from childhood to the present (63 yrs. old). These included seasonal problems; around Christmas, Feb. to May, August to Nov. My formative experience happened when I went to Hawaii for a much needed 6 weeks vacation. When I exited the plane (via stairway, this was 1970's), my sinuses were clear by the time I got to the bottom and stayed that way the whole time I was there. This changed my life. I had been miserable up to then. I realized the causes were environmental. For me this means pollens(more than one) and diet (eliminating milk, eggs and flour, especially unbleached white bread). Eggs is the worst; one ice cream bar jams my sinuses in less than an hour. Any seasonally recurring problems are pollens, even if the weather websites say that there are no pollen problems in your area. The safest way to deal with this is to take Vitamin C in gram size doses ( the 50 milligram business is to prevent scurvy, not relevant to this problem). Take one gram in the morning before eating; this will clear your sinuses in 30 mins. Also get used to blowing your nose, the vit. C loosens the mucus so you can blow easily. Also take it several times daily with meals, 1 or 2 grams, including before going to bed, so you can breathe at night. Up to at least 10 grams is harmless. If you get diarhea cut back. This is also recommended by Dr.Linus Pauling, the Nobel Prize winner. Also Sudafed and the other over the counter drugs dry your sinuses, Vit. C moistens them. Do not use both. If you do, you will be sorry. Bronchitis here we come!

  • I suffered and still do from the same problems. Nothing relieves my nasal problems accept corticosteroids. I discovered through an Ear Nose and Throat specialist that i had polyps in my sinuses and had surgery to remove them and widen my sinuses. Problem is, they returned 9 months later and I am back at square one facing another surgery as my ONLY option for relief again. It was describd to me like the sinus tissue and polyps are like calluses and when you try to remove them or shave them down the body fights even more aggressively to re-grow it as a backwards protection plan. I am not sure how many surgeries i will have to have in my lifetime (I am only 27) but I have no other choice because I refuse to take prednisone all of the time due the horrific side effects of long term use. I hope this helps....GET YOUR NOSE LOOKED AT BY A SPECIALIST....and maybe an allergist as well.

  • hi My daughter was born with a condition called choanal atresia, bilateral (both sides) which means that she was not able to breathe through her nose.. she had a little airway on da left.. maybe see ur ent consultant again..ask for an endoscopic exam (camera up the nose). This will definately get to the root of the problem.. Choanal atresia is where there is an obstruction of the nasal cavities with either bone or tissue, or both.. Choanal atresia sufferers are notorious for mouth breathing.. My daughter is 6 months old now and had stenting and dialation surgerys.. there prob wud not be a need for stenting in adults..but if u have suffered all your life with this i would investigate further.. Green secretions is often an indicater.. the sinus try to clean da nose with secretions when it is obstructed somewhat.

  • I have had life changing results recently by giving up tap water reducing milk intake.I would be very interested if someone could try the same and post back their findings.I believe there is something in the water that was causing the swolen nasal passages and the milk was causing the extra mucus making things even more uncomfortable . I had clear results after about 4 days.
