Hello I am new to the boards and wondering if anyone here could help me figure out what may be wrong with me. I became severely constipated back at the end of 2006 after I took these pain pills Tramadol for period pain. Every since then I cant 'go' unless I do some kind of laxative or enema. I struggled with it all during 2007 taking all different kinds of laxatives to try and regulate my system again. Then during 2008 I started looking into natural/herbal laxatives to help the problem. Unfortunatly things just took a turn for the worst around February 2008. I took this stuff with psyllum husks in it and every since then my colon hasnt felt normal. I feel this terrible blockage in my rectum, always. It feels like something is stuck there that cant be pushed out no matter what!!!!! No matter how much laxative or enema I take. I even had a colonoscopy done last May to see if there was a blockage or something. He said the test showed fecal matter in my colon but he did nothing about it. He just told me to eat some bran cereal and sent me on my way. It seemed like he should've looked into it more but he didnt! Your suppose to be completely cleaned out when you have a colonoscopy but obviously I wasnt since he saw fecal matter in my colon!!!!!!! Needless to say i did NOT feel completely cleaned out even after taking all that laxative stuff for the test. It still felt like something stuck in my rectum. Like some kind of impaction or something that cant be pushed out for nothing!!!!!!! I'm really at my wits end with this and have tried so many things to get rid of this problem to no avail! My stomach is always bloated/hurting because I can never fully empty my bowels. And I feel this awful pain/pressure/discomfort in my rectum, always. I can even often feel my poo like getting stuck around something at the rectum and it cant get out and just goes back up inside and makes my stomach hurt so much. Can someone please tell me what you think this may be. I'm planning to try and see another doctor about this but I dont have any money or insurance and really worried I wont be able to get the help I so desperately need!!!!!!! PLEASE HELP!!!!!!!!!

  • I took Tramadol for pain as well, it didn't help me and I have other conditions of which it does not agree ... so my pain med was changed. However, I was told by my doctor to get stool softener (and take it 3x per day, as the bottle allows) and also, most importantly, a STIMULANT stool softener, once a day only, in addition. Talk to your pharmacist. It took three days with the one stimulant stool softener and the regular stool softener at three times per day before "it happened" ... and when it happened, it happened seven times the first day, four times the second day, then I became regular. Then, I would take the one STIMULANT stool softener (best to take this one at bedtime) and two stool softeners and remained regular. Then ... my medication was changed anyway. That may be a side-effect that goes away with time, it seemed as though it was in my case and I needed less of the above-mentioned "therapies." Make sure you really eat the fiber too ... because although I took those as directed above, when I had those movements, they were "far from soft!" And there's a technique for females for that too (movement comes, but is not soft and the size/firmness is the problem when the movement finally comes), but I dare not post it here. You may email me for that little trick if you want to know it: neurotransmissing@yahoo.com Talk to the pharmacist and let him/her know that you need an effective, yet gentle, STIMULANT laxative and, in addition, an effective and gentle stool softener that are safe and can be taken long-term, or even life-long. They, of course, should be familiar with this problem with Tramadol. Best of luck gettin' movin' (sorry, couldn't resist ... been there!) p.s. I experienced exactly what you are going through; at one point, I was so backed up I suffered from nausea ... and nearly vomited! Wouldn't surprise me if you are also suffering from acid reflux or heartburn/indigestion as well, I did. And darn that bloating!

  • Thankyou for your response to my post. I'm glad that you got your constipation under control and became regular again! Right now I'm taking an herbal colon formula to help with the constipation. Its not a laxative but a formula thats suppose to strength the colon muscles and help them work better over time. I'm no longer taking the Tramadol. I stopped taking that way back in 2006, and only took it for about a month I believe, but the severe constipation still remains. It seems that the med completely ruined the function of my colon:(. I will be seeing a doctor about my problems in about two weeks and just hoping that I can find out whats wrong and get some relief soon!

  • I'm sorry you are suffering so long term, and perhaps damaged to no return, due to a side-effect from a medication that was intended to help you! I think I took the Tramadol for a week or so ... not long; I'm very grateful to be off of it after reading your post. I certainly have "more-than-plenty" conditions ... if I had to deal with colon problems or bowel movements for long too, I would certainly feel like I was "down the toilet" with that ... in addition to the mess I already have! Thanks a bunch for posting that! I'd like to look into that, as far as permanent damage ... I know others that are on it, and have been for quite some time (many, many moons). How sad.

  • Hi I can give alot of advice on this as being someone similar to you, my story is long and complicated, basically I had surgery for an anal skin tag and ended up having 11 ops and my colon removed in May and im 34. Im on here to help other people as I know when I was ill for 4 years no-one wanted to help me & because of it eventually I lost my colon, it could of been prevented...its extremely rare & I was bedridden for most of 3 years. If you are that ill, as I totally understand how it ruins your life then bran wont help, GP's are so patronising sometimes. To be using that much laxatives & enemas your condition must be severe. I have to tell my GP whats wrong with me & what I need!! when it comes to bowels. I looked 5 months preg where I was so bloated & never quite feeling like my bowel was empty...it is horrendous. You could have a rectal prolapse where the bowel collapses into the vagina, this would make intercourse painful too & give you a lower bad back. Its fairly common & caused by straining..google it. I had mine corrected with an operation. When the bowel doesnt empty properly the toxins build up hence making you feel so ill. It makes me so angry when people aren't taken seriously by GPs the very people we rely on to get us better!! Ive been to 7 hospitals & had various surgeons, my surgeon now is fantastic, he removed my colon via my belly button & even gave me a photo of the op, he saved me. My colon was totally wrecked. I had enemas on prescription and picolax. And for a colonscopy you def need your bowels cleared first, my step dad had one last week & had to take bowel prep 2 days before. Please go back to your GP or even a different GP and get a second opinion, you cannot live a normal life as you are & trust me you could just get worse when they could easily make you better. I can only go on my experience but it is vast and I wouldnt be at all surprised if you have a prolapse. It can be easily identified with a test with barium and an xray. Tell your doc what you wrote on here and suggest to him you think you have a rectal prolapse because of the blockage and ask for the test. I can give you the exact name of it if it helps, just dont suffer in silence there is alot they should be doing for you. If it gets really bad check yourself into A&E, there is help out there, its just knowing the help to get. If you get a sore anus after bm get a cream called cavilon barrier cream it is a god send, I only found out about it from having my colon out..wish id known about it before. I really hope my advice helps you

  • Hi if you want the test name email me kerry.maidment@hotmail.co.uk and I will give you the name of it. Your GP will know of it, it isnt a new thing out or anything:) You will then be able to get well again and live a normal life

  • I have same issue in some way that everyone here has expressed. I have been to doctor after doctor. Everyone says everything is half **s ok. I had a colonoscopy and also a strange test with a camera put down my throat. Well my results was I had palops on my colon and that I had a swollen stomach and some other doctor long words mumbo jumbo. I said ok what we doing about this. The doc said we will remove your colon and attach your large intestine to your rectum after a full hysterectomy. Without the hysterectomy the uterus will sit on the rectum and the surgery will not work. I have been waiting ever sense 2-2010 for this surgery. Till then my stomach/belly area swells every time I eat and my stomach feels full for about 4 hours or so. Then about every 12 to 14 hours after I eat I look like I am 6 months pregnant. Then if I don't empty my bowels I swell to about 9 months looking. And during all this I swell so bad I cant even go pee. It sucks so bad. I was 100lbs not under weight but very nice body but a year ago I started to gain weight from this issue. Now I weigh 150 and it sucks. The worst part is how I have to empty. Every other day or two if I eat enough I have to get down on my hands and knees and insert a rectal enema and then lean onto my chest with my **s in the air waiting for the enema to make my stomach hurt. Then I pop up onto the toilet and sit and wait. Then if I am lucky I will start to feel the water of the enema come out. Then I will get these what I call rat turds. Every time I do this I have to put on gloves and lube up my first and middle finger with lube and insert into my anus. I have to push my uterus out of the way with one finger and then use the other to circle around my **s just to get the feces moving. It is so nasty and embarrassing to myself really. The strange part is if I do get it all out I seem to urinate so much. Its almost like I have not gone in days. I know then that I am empty if I can empty out my bladder and I start to feel some relief. I go back and fourth to the doctors just waiting for a surgeon to take my case and fix my issue. The worst has yet to come. I have had this for many years but just this last 2 years it has gotten bad. I have a muscle disease that is eating my muscle tissue and fiber. its something like a muscular dystrophy and there is 12 different MD cases. Your colon is muscle and your lungs and your heart and so on and so fourth. This is the issue. My doctors ain't doing a dang thing about it. I take meds to keep me from shaking cause I have really bad shakes and jerks. I take meds for pain cause I am weak and my muscles are wasting away. And I hurt 24 hours a day and it never seems to let up. I take meds for my heart. I take meds for my thyroid for having hypothyroidism and well the list goes on. I am 30 ****ing years old. (excuse my language) Its just hard cause I have yet till now found someone that relates the crap I have to go through just to take a crap. I hope all of you are getting treatment and or got it and being treated. I know its hard. I have been going back and fourth to doctors sense I was a child. I have been on my own scene I was 17 and had insurance for myself (although its state and it don't cover ****).I have been searching for a specialist and let me tell you it is hard. Doctors are *******s and most seem to just push you away if you don't have good medical insurance. And I think I am going to end up so sick that I am afraid of how this will end. This constipation is not good. The longer it sits inside your intestine the more damage it causes. It can backfire on you causing a really bad odor to sweat out your body from the toxins building up. It can if gone long enough with out going to the bathroom can actually cause your intestine to implode inside your belly causing internal bleeding and so much more and even death. I don't want to die with a belly full of ****. That is not a good way to go.I just don't understand how doctors get away with letting us go this long without treating us. We know our body's and we know there is something wrong. Living on laxatives is not a way to live. Watching what we eat and all the fiber and so on isn't either. My advice to everyone that has these issues weather you have insurance or not is to bug the crap out of these doctors and tell them to do their job before something bad happens. I bug my doctors once a week it seems. But then I go to like 4 different doctors for my issues. But all my doctors are in sink about my issues and are trying to work together to solve my problems. I hope everyone gets the help they need. I am trying to.And when it comes to going to the bathroom. It may hurt but I am telling you that enemas are the way to go and using gloves and some lube may hurt but if you have a husband or man in your life the only way to have pain free sex is to empty and that is the way to get it all out. It works for the time being. Hope what I had to add helps. And don't stop bugging your doctors cause sooner or later they will help cause they will have to.

  • Hi guys, hope you can read this and enlighten me what i have...doctors have no emotion and in my opinion are scapegoats of the pharma... N wld definitely prefer taking the advice of sm1 who shres the same problems... I am 16 and ever since 2 years ago, i started straining to have a bowel movement after eery meal even though my rectum did not have any stool...because websites claimed that one had to have 3 movements a day to stay healthy but because o my mcdonald filled diet, how do you expect 3 movements a day....So Ever since then.. I would relax on my bed pn e a day and concentrate on straining and on e i have pushed the stool far enough into the rectum i would rush to the toilet...But the thing is ever since , i am never able to get the urge even though i can feel my sigmoid colon filled...pls do note that also i when i take laxative, in the past the diarhea would just. Blow out if held too long like a normal person... But now if i have diarhea.. I get gurgling in my colon and have to also strain just to empty the liquid out. 2 years on , (lastw week)i just went to the hospital not emergency though and told the doctor about symptoms and what i was suffering from... And guys this is where it gets jnteresting... He gave a rectal exam where he stuck a finger in to manually wriggled around the rectum... He then told me there was no stool and i was not constipTed ... So he the. Gave me a fleet enema... Nothing... Rmbr i once again strained to get the liquid out... The next day.. I went to school and ate.. After eating, felt urge and rushed to the toliet...1 stool... Minimal straining... Very happy and hoped it stayed that way...The next once again in sch... I got the urge and defecated 2 stools but strained abit... Very happy but the days afterwards i didnt get the urge anymore.. So now my question is what do i have.... 1) is it hemmorhoids? Because i dontbleed and no pain even when straining.... But could it be this type of severe internal hemarhoids link:http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=W3_MMC9jIVI 2) or. Could be anal/rectal stenious (spelling)? Simce the rectal exam acts like a dialator. Or could it be anything else... Pls do help... I see my teen years. Being flushed down e toilet.... Cheers

What you at,e likely suffering from is colonic inertia....Most people say that it can only happen cause of diabetes etc.... But there are many reasons for colonic inertia....I would suggest you would have to get yur bowels cleaned out then use high nutrient foods to intensify the healing process so that you can get your body to work again....I too have colonic inertia however it's getting better for me.Hope you get better too

    8 Surprising Facts About Cholesterol

Did you know that one in six US adults has high cholesterol?

  • I have the same issue as well, have had colonoscopy/endoscopy/cat scan/small bowel series, all shows normal. I cannot go to the bathroom without laxatives and I've never had to take laxatives in my life until now (early 30s). It is awful to have to live like this day over day. For the others suffering from this issue, was it a gradual change or sudden change (the onset of constipation?) It should not even be called constipation in our cases, it is colon paralysis.I previous posted in another part of this site regarding this same problem, will paste from there:http://forums.bettermedicine.com/showthread.php/116151-my-colon-stopped-working-paralytic-ileusA few months ago I was turning in bed and felt a searing pain in my LUQ. The pain felt sharp like a knife stabbing into my LUQ, I’ve never had any type of pain like this before. It caused me to jump out of bed and my entire body was sweating. I walked around for a few minutes and waited for the pain to subside and got back into bed. I can no longer lie on my left side due to the pain. Before the event, I would have a bowel movement like clockwork every morning. Each week after the event, I noticed my bowel output became less and less. As the problem became worse, I noticed LUQ and RUQ pain increased if I strained. A month later, I stopped having bowel movements. After a week without a bowel movement, I took laxatives for the first time in my life as I was at wits end from continual bloating. By taking various laxatives I am able to have some partial evacuations; however, I have never been able to completely empty my bowel as in the past.Lab work: I’ve had multiple blood tests, the doctors tell me everything is normal. On the round of blood tests, my Alpha-1-Antitrypsin was low at 68mg/dL with the normal range being 90-200. The doctors stated that this was nothing to worry about and that it was only an issue if it was very high. My IgA was on the low-end at 82mg/dL (normal 90-400) but the doctors were not concerned. I had also had a full celiac panel done and it all came back normal.Scans: I have had a KUB x-ray, a CAT scan without contrast and fluoroscopy with barium swallow. All of these tests came back normal with the exception that in each scan there was a lot of stool noted in the colon, one doctor reviewed the CT and could not believe the amount of stool in the colon but offered no idea as to what is causing the problem.Suggestion: My primary suggested I go to a major clinic such as Mayoclinic, Cleveland Clinic, I have booked such an appointment but it is months away and I am suffering from this every day. I have visited other doctors, including internists and gastroenterologists but they are not sure what is causing the problem. They all listened to the bowels with a stethoscope and they stated the bowels were normal.I have looked into several possibilities as to what may be causing this problem:adhesions – possible but typically can only be diagnosed with an exploratory laparoscopy, which can cause more adhesionsdiaphragmatic hernia – would of showed up with the fluoroscopy with barium swallow and this is typically congenitalfecal impaction – the doctors stated the bowel sounds were normal upon auscultationh. pylori – blood tests came back negativepartial bowel obstruction – I have not had the common symptoms such as nausea and vomitingprotein losing enteropathy - previous urine tests were normalIt is awful having to live like this and I am desperately seeking help to find what is causing this problem.

CheersI think similar symptoms are described by some of the sufferers here http://anal-fissure.org/bm-blockage-by-hemorrhoid-t2034.html
