I have had swelling in my left knee for 4 days now. i woke up friday morning. i couldnt stand let alone walk. i still cant stand. im on crutches. there is bruising on my knee and the pain is getting worse and worse and is spreading to above and below my knee. the swelling is getting bigger too:( i am 20 years old, female. i have not recently fallen, or have done anything physical to cause this. I've went to 2 ERs. the 1st one said to wrap it and go back to life as usual. i lifeguard for a job and told them that it does require standing for long periods of time-30 min. at the most. i told her that even with a brace that i wouldnt be able to stand. and im right, i cant stand even with a brace. and i cant swim because of my knee either so i havent been able to work since saturday:(-and i live by myself-I have bills to pay!!!!! the 2nd ER doc i went to said stay off it and see an orthopedic surgeon-go get an MRI done. i don't have health insurance or any money for a downpayment (im moving this friday to a new a new apartment cuz i HATE where im at now-->im broke) to see a surgeon to get an MRI and find out what's wrong. I haven't talked to my parents for over a year so there no use. I've tried ice, heat, biofreeze, icyhot, a brace, staying off it, 500mg of vicodin 2x a day and 500mg of naprosyn 2x a day. nothing works!!!!!!!!! and it's ******g me off no one can tell me what's wrong. PLEASE HELP!!! WHAT'S WRONG???

  • It sounds like you probably have a stress fracture or possibly an infection in your knee. Did the ER docs draw any fluid out of your knee or take x-rays? You need to go see an orthopedic surgeon soon before you end up in the ER again, most will make payment plans for you to cover the bill or give you a discount for paying at the time of service. You can different orthopedic surgeons offices and ask if they have any type of charity care you can apply for to be seen and treated, a lot of them do. I work for an orthopedic surgeon who will see patients who don't have insurance for free so that they get treatment. At the very least you need to take naproxen or ibuprofen consistently for the next few weeks as well as keep it elevated as much as possible to get the swelling to go down.

  • I went tuesday morning to a clinic to get my left leg tapped-for fluid to come out of it and get it tested for an infection. they put lightacane->light-a-cane, into my knee to numb it. not even after 10 sec. passed i passed out n had shaking->i have vasovagal syncope. i woke up n somone said i went white as a ghost and to get an IV in me. they did and then i went to the hospital. i told them about the syncope and they ran a cat scan and an MRI on my brain and an echo on my heart. they are all fine. i still have vasovagal and that was what it was when i passed out after the numbing med was shot in my knee on tuesday. i just got out of the hospital a few hours ago. they told me to do outpatient for my knee. im going to c a prthopedic surgeon on monday. i dont weant them going anywhere my knee again unless they knock me out and put me to sleep. i dont want to pass out again. while in the hospital besides my left knee being swollen my left ankle is swollen too:( im on the same dose of emds that wont make the pain go away. i have the same pain i had last friday when i woke up and saw it swollen for the first time. if it is an infection why is it taking so long for them to tell me that and if something is torn will i be out of work for a while? i live by myself and i have bills to pay. i lifeguard for a job and right now with my knee the way it is i still cant swim. also when i left the hospital they refused to give me a doc. note saying that i can be off work. they wrote me a note saying i can go back tomorrow-i cant walk yet!!!! there stupid idiots. what now? what do you think the surgeon will do when i see him monday?

  • Did the doctor get any fluid out of your knee before you fainted? When you see the orthopedic surgeon take your x-rays of your knee to them or they may take more. They will do an exam, feel for any fluid in the joint, and given what you have already been through probably order a MRI of your knee to see if you have a stress fracture (sometimes they are hard to see on x-rays) or if you have any damage to the muscles or tendons. If it is an infection it takes 2-3 days from the time they draw fluid out of your knee until they get the results back. If something is torn and it is a small tear most doctors will try a cortisone injection first, however given your history of vasovagal syncope it may cause you to faint again unless you can stay calm enough for a 30 second injection. If the injection works you can go back to work soon, probably with a brace for support. If there is something torn and it's a major tear it will probably require surgery and you are looking at about 6 weeks off work. Depending on the surgery, some knee procedures can be done arthroscopic ally which allow for quicker healing. For now keep taking the naproxen twice a day and use ice for 20 minutes at a time (no less) 3-4 times a day to help the swelling go down. Take the vicodin as you need it and see what the surgeon has to say on monday.

  • I have to get knee surgery in 2 weeks-may 21st. he is doing knee arthroscopy surgery-out patient. he says i have an osteochondral knee injury on the outside of my left knee-that would explain why it hurts there and there is swelling there. but on the innner part of my knee is much more swelling and it hurts much more there. nothing showed up on the MRI for the inner part of my knee:( so he wont know till after the surgery what is wrong with it. there doing this to my left side of my left knee-mosaicplasty or OATS precodure (it said OATS on my doctor's note for work). i lifeguard for a job. he says i can go back to work for now but not to push it if it hurts. i know i cant swim but ill try. do you know how long it will take to get back my normal range of motion or at least be able to straighten and bend my knee to where i can kick my butt after surgery? also i forgot to ask but will he give me stiches that dissolve on their own and put my knee-or leg-in a cast after the surgery so it can heal and wont move? thanks.

ARe you on birth control by chance? Have they ruled out blood clots due to DVT? Have you had an vascular ultrasound done? The fact that your inner knee is worse may indicate this problem, and should be ruled out IMO. I personally think this should be ruled out before resorting to surgery. I have a patient with factor V leiden deficiency, and has had blood clots. His first symptoms were swelling and pain in the knee. Best wishesDOM

Mosaicplasty or OATS procedure is replacing the cartilage with cadaver cartilage or cartilage from another part of your body to replace "fix" the osteochondral injury (which only means injury to the bone and/or cartilage). Swimming is probably the easiest activity you can do because it's non-impact on your joints, I usually recommend it to my patients who are in a lot of pain for a form of exercise because of this. It will probably take you about 4-6 weeks to get your normal range of motion and function back after surgery if you follow your surgeons directions (i.e. don't put weight on it until you are told you can, keep it elevated after surgery as much as possible, use ice a few times a day to help with swelling, etc.) You will probably have to go to physical therapy as well as do home exercises for about 3 months to get the muscles around your knee strong so that you reduce the risk of re-injuring it. You shouldn't be in a cast after surgery, but you may be in a knee immobilizer (a brace that keeps your knee straight) for a few weeks, during that time you can usually do exercises where you flex your quad and hamstring muscles to keep the muscle tone. You will most likely get dissolvable stitches on the layers of tissue inside and non-dissolvable ones on the skin layer that you will have to have taken out 10-14 days after surgery. Some surgeons use all dissolvable ones but not many. Did your MRI show that anything was torn?

  • no. nothing is torn in my left knee. i am going back to see him tomorrow.n there has been clicking/popping in my left knee but not much. i allready told him that, but now there is popping/clicking in my right knee-i bend it to hit my butt and then when i bend it back down is when it does this. and when sit in a butterfly position-what you do when you stretch out-on the floor with my right knee in that position only and try to move my knee towards the floor it pops/clicks too. and it f***ing hurts my knee/kneecap!!!:( basically whenever i bend it pops/clicks:( is it doing this cuz i have been putting all my weight on my right leg and right knee for the past 2 weeks? i hope nothing is wrong with this one now. would he have to do surgery on my right knee too or give me an MRI on it? what do you think is causing this?:(

  • Without seeing you and doing an exam it is hard to tell why your knee is popping and clicking. I would say that unless your right knee is swollen you shouldn't be looking at getting another MRI, it is possible that you are putting to much stress on your right knee in compensating for your left knee.

  • i got a letter in the mail yesterday from my insurance company saying i may have hurt my knee for a work related injury. i don't know if i did or not but i guess i'll try to fill it out anyways.i tried calling my doc. to find out what he did to my knee yesterday. i had to leave him a message to call me back but then my sister's cell phone died-therefore until i get to a phone (which won't be for a while-i can't call anyone.i started physical therapy yesterday for an hour each session. starting next week i will be doing it 2 times a week. my leg is all wrapped up A LOT in ace bandages-especially my knee-it's wrapped up enough that you'd think it has a cast underneath it but there's not one-and i have a leg brace on-and expensive on too-$220- but i get to keep it:) i'll still be out of work for the next 6 weeks. and i'll be in this knee brace for the next 6 weeks.Physical therapy makes my knee hurt but it is ok. I have to go in early next wedneday before PT and call and ask my orthopedic surgeon what he did to my knee and if he filled out the FMLA papers i gave him thursday and then if he can fax them to my work. both my doc. and physical therapy is right next door to each other. lucky me. I called him yesterday when I got to PT and he had left at noon.i'm also on 4,000mg of vicodin a day. it wears me out easily.i only have 10 bus tickets and thats to get to physical therapy and back home, and to my knee doc. and back home when i go see him next in 2 weeks to find out what he exactly did to my knee. something about a microfracture procedure was done. the name is very misleading to what he did though. some of the cartiledge in my knee is gone so they had to drill holes in to top part of my knee bone before it hit the joint to go on to the rest of my leg. that part of the bone was hardened and there was no blood flow there. so when the holes were drilled blood (and cells along with it) will flow out of the holes and make new cartiledge. it won't be as strong as the cartiledge that was originally there though. i don't know what else he did to my knee. i don't go back and see him till june 2nd and then i'll know for sure what he did, it seems like it wasn't as bad as what he first told me though:) i'll be on crutches and in my leg brace for the next 6 weeks:( when i get back to work i'm still gonna keep a knee brace on just so when i go back to my regular activities-work and dance practice-ii don't tear the new cartiledge that will be in my knee. i have physical therapy 2 times a week for at least the next 6 weeks. it will take till at least the end of sept. to get my knee back to normal in terms of strength and motion. im hoping to be back at work by the beginning of july. my doc. says if i want we can try and get me back to work earlier than that but since i don't know what caused my knee to be screwed up like it was, i dont wanna come back to work and dance practice too early, even though i really need the money, and have my knee not heal right and then have to have more knee surgery in the future. if im back to work early and better thats fine but if i have to be out longer than 6 weeks then thats fine too.i do have stretches to do at home. some of them hurt, others don't. when i do them i get to take the brace and ace wrap off. it hurts a little more with them off but not much. the ones that i hate the most is where i have to take a towel and put it under my foot and then move my whole leg left to right and where i take a towel and put it under my knee and try to pull my knee up-i hate that one the most. there is supposed to be a CPM machine sent to me next week sometime to help move my knee around. right now except for physical therapy and going back to my doc. about my knee i'm stuck at home. with taking the bus to PT and back it's gonna be a pain in the **s to get to my apartment from the bus stop. what took me 5 min. to get to when i was able to walk normally is gonna take me forver to get to on crutches-and it'll hurt to being on them for that long. and to get on the bus you'll have to add crossing the street to get on the buss too. i asked my dad when he picked me up from PT yesterday if he could pick me up from them next week at 6pm and he said no. i still hate him for saying that. i'll still have to challenge when i get back to so i can still guard. as long as i can get the brick in time i'll be fine.ive been out of work since april 25th. i hope i dont lose my job for being out for so long-thats why im trying to get on FMLA. im *****d that barnes hospital told me when i first noticed something was wrong that i should just put it in a brace-which it was allready in-and to go back to work-no restrictions. went to get my kne tapped few days later numbing meds put in my knee to get it dione passed out went to barnes for 3 days said i still have vasovagal syncope. went to my orthopedic surgeon after my dad told me he never took me off his health insurance. he took an MRI and sais there was a cyst in my top bone and the cartiledge was gone. some sort of version happened. i'll know for sure what was wrong when i go see him in 2 weeks. if i can win im gonna sue barnes hospital for telling me i was able to physically go back to work and guard-after i told them that it does require me to stand and swim-and if i have to get someone to run and jump too-things i still can not do until my knee gets better. but they let me go back to work when they shouldn't have.do you think if i sued barnes hospital for letting me go back to work with no restrictions and then finding out by another doc. that i needed knee surgery which i just got done id have a case to take them to court? do u think if i took them to court id win? also they never told me to ice it, stay off of it, elevate it, or to go see specialist or an orthopedic surgeon or to get an MRI on it. all they said was nothing is broken, z-rays are normal. go back to work with no restrictions. keep the knee brace on. the swelling should go down on it's own. my knee was swollen up to when i had surgery this past thursday abd it is STILL swollen:(

  • I have exactly the same symptoms. I will have a scan tomorrow. I can now barely walk. None of the drugs work and the pain is getting worse every day...with today being the most painful day since this started some 3 months ago.I am so sick of it and feel so depressed.

  • 3 months is too long to be having those symptoms and do nothing about it. if you have a microfracture once your knee pain would start you would NOT be able to walk or stand until you got it fixed. my ortho. thought i only had a 2mm hole which turned out to be a 1 inch hole. i get off my crutches next week but i'll have to still be in physical therapy to learn how to walk normally again. i tried and i cant. i end up keeping my leg straight. i havent walked since may 1st and even though i can bend my knee with no pain now i still tried and cant bend it to walk-it's like i forgot how to do it:(
