Okay.. I need some help!

This started at the beginning of September, when I got a lip rash that stayed for a week. It started small, just one one area of my lip as small red bumps, which tingled and itched and soon spread to the rest of my lips. Sometimes the bumps break open and then crust, sometimes they dry and peel, sometimes they're just red bumps.

What you need to know:

It comes for a week, then is gone for a week before returning for another week, etc. (it is a vicious cycle)
I have never had any lip problems before the first occurrence of this rash
The rash has been, at one point or another, on every area of my lips (outside only)
There are no irritations inside my mouth
The rash does not spread past the boundaries of my lips
There are no rashes anywhere else on my body
I have introduced no new things to my body (no change in diet, toothpaste, toothbrush, mouthwash, lip balm, living situation, people that I come into contact with, medicines, etc.); nothing new except for this stupid lip irritation
It is not contagious - my fiance has not gotten any of this from me, he has experienced no symptoms
I feel perfectly fine, except for the tingling/itching/burning/discomfort of my lips
my lips sometimes swell when the irritation is present

  • Wow I have the same thing! When I was pregnant with my daughter I was tested for everything so I know I don't have herpes. Everything I have researched says that it is herpes except WebMD. When I used the symptom checker it came back that it was anxiety. Please tell me how being stressed has manifested on my lips!!!

  • I get this too! I am convinced it's a physical symptom of stress. Starting when I was a Freshman in college my lips would break out if something stressful happened... now I am planning a huge gala event and the rash is awful. I guess we just need to chill out? I have been using Nivea's "A kiss of relief" lip balm, it feels really nice. It may help you. My older sister's lips swell up really bad when she is stressed out, so maybe this awful thing is stress/hormone related and... genetic? I have no idea. I thought I was the only sufferer. So glad I found you guys.

  • The original posted problem posted is exactly what has happened to me for the past three or four months. At first I thought it was just chaped lips from the winter weather, but now it is the middle of June and my lips are itchy, dry, peeling, and this rash only follows the border of my upper and lower lips. It goes in 3 to 4 days cycles and at its worst I will wake up in the morning looking like I have clown makeup on my lips because they are such deep, rashy red. It hurts to open my mouth wide enough to eat. I plan on going to the dermatologist but it seems after researching this there are just a few options such as cortisone cream. If this is an allergic reaction, I cannot imagine why, since I have made no life changes that I can think of, and I do not find that it is related to stress. Thanks for sharing your similar problems.

  • You all should get a blood test for herpes 1 if it bothers you that much. The boyfriend may already have it and not have overt symptoms. The tingling suggests herpes, too. If it looks, acts and responds like it, there's a good chance it is it. Considering 90% of the population has it, that's your odds..You can manage it with diet and lauricidin..homeopathic formulas at health food stores, whether it is or isn't, www.lauricidin.com

  • I have also been plagued by this lip rash. I dont know where it came from because I haven't changed any of my healthcare products recently. It is really irritating, and sometimes i wish i could just rip my lips off (yea it is that bad). Dont know what to do. I feel terrible because i cannot kiss my girlfriend (and honestly i would kiss me myself). However, i take comfort knowing that it is not an entirely isolated incident since so many of you have experienced this. Any treatment suggestions??? I tried toothpaste to soothe it, it felt good while it was on but once i washed it off, the rashes looked nastier than ever. Help!

  • Check with the dentist to see if you have a tooth infection -- sometimes they can be painless but the infection can leak into the surrounding facial tissue and cause unusual swelling. Good luck to you --

  • I have the same exact problem that you do!!! 5 years ago, my grandmother moved in with us while she was dying of cancer. That was the first time that I noticed this irritating rash! That was by far the most stressful time in my life and so I'm thinking that there is a very good possibility its stress related. However, I have also heard that similar symptoms arise with a vitamin B2 deficiency. I wake up in the morning and I can barely open my mouth. My lips just feel very sensitive to the touch and are extremely dry with slight swelling present as well. There is also a faint red rim of tiny bumps along the edges of my lips. This is really irritating and so far, no doctor or medicine has been able to help me. Anyone who has some soothing home remedies...let me know! =)

  • It is true that this can be a stress reaction, however, it's not mediated by the usual internal hormonal paths such as stress related breakouts can be. What's happening here is some folks have an increased tendency to lick their lips while under stress, the constant wetting and evaporation of saliva tends to dry and chap the lips leading to more lip licking.

  • I'm pregnant with my first baby and am 30 weeks. I have these same symptoms. I used to get them in high school as well and I was a virgin with virgin lips even. I had never kissed a boy. I get these when I'm stressed and have since I was young.

  • Hello all. I have been dealing with this off and on for about 3 years now. At first the doc thought it was poison oak or something, giving me prednisone and whatnot for the reaction. of course it cleared, but alas, it happened again... i had gone to an allergy specialist... tested for the usual-nothing!! alright alright.. i think its ok but this summer it has happened twice within 2 months... and you know it takes forever to get into the dermatologist right? well i manage to get in. she thinks its an allergic reaction. i cannot eat papaya, mango, tomato, etc. ONLY VASELINE ON YOUR LIPS.. and brush only with baking soda (some folks are allergic to fluoride)... so my symptoms... swells, tingles, itches, little bumps starting with the top left part of my lip. only once or twice has it been off the rest of my face but that could be irrelevant. has never been on the inside of my mouth til this summer, just bumps on the roof of my mouth. i do have stress/anxiety issues (who doesnt in this culture) but have been hard pressed to think the answer cant be that easy! i was in fear that it was herpes or anything like that... and please God dont make it so i am allergic to tomatoes! anyway, i am glad i found this site... i really did think i was alone in this... we are in it together!! i will post with anything new that i find at some point.. right now i am diminishing every allergic possibility to see if it will come back, then we will see from there...

  • Hey- I've been getting the exact same thing since I was around 16. It sounds exactly the same but mine does go outside the boundary of my lips if it gets bad enough. The doctor diagonosed it as contact dermatitis and I used fragrance free everything for weeks with no changes. I also tried removing common allergens from my diet. No difference. It actually got so bad that time that I also got hives all over my body and my eyes swelled shut. I finally figured out without any help from a doctor that it was stress and lack of sleep. I have an anxiety disorder so reducing stress isn't always an option but the last few years any time I would feel it coming I would take a bunch of Vitamin C (helps your body handle stress) and a Tylenol PM and get like 14 hours of sleep. This would usually clear it up before it started. But this February my son almost died and was in the ICU for a week and a half. Every stress in my life really paled before that. My lip rash showed up and hasn't really been gone in the last 6 months, partly because I have had not one good night's sleep since. Here's what HAS helped: I try to get 8 hours of sleep a night, if I get less than that I make myself take a nap or go to bed earlier the next night, Vaseline for your lips (no fragrances, nothing to dry out your lips worse), I also take 2,000 mg of L-lysine every day (an amino acid that your body uses more of when you are stressed) and I have a cream from the health store with L-lysine in it that also helps. It hasn't totally cleared up the rash but I have gone from having it 6 or 7 days a week to 2 days a week. And I am practicing calm thoughts.

Good luck to you --So I have this lip rash, it itches, burns, is hard to see. I thought it was the beinning of a fever blister so I took L-lysine, I have thrush so I was taking a B complex, I cannot heal it, I have been appling A&D everytime I wake at night to nurse the baby. I take 800mg of pain killers and it does not go again. So I guess it is stress.

I just had a blood test done and it came back negative with less than 1% chance of a false negative. I am completely baffled by what the rash could possibly be, but the thought of it gives me anxiety so i hope it is not caused by anxiety.... It definitely appears after bouts of stress, depression or heavy drinking/poor eating/not working out.

  • I have the exact same irritating thing as well. A lip rash that starts on or around the top lips with fine little bums and progresses togetting wors- peeling, cracking, swelling, discoloration and puffy or seeping lips! Yuck! I have seen different dermatolgists about it and they also agreeded it was not herpes and I have no herpes. When it was so bad the first episode, and I had my lips almost speckled, swollen and purple from the trama, my doctor gave me an oral antibiotic and then a mild steroid typically used for dermatitis or ezcema. That worked but I am totally dependent on the steroid now and hate that. I want to get pregannat and am not sure I will be able to use that then or it will stop working after my body becomes acustomed to it. I'm worried it will never be cured. I have had times when it was gone for a month or several months but lately for the last several months it isn't going anywhere and is always present so I have to use the steroid and plain vaseline or Aquaphor which is esentially the same thing with a couple more neutral ingredients. Let me know what else has worked for folks, please? I have some stress but not too much....I am thinking of trying the antibiotic again with the steroid to start that process over and elimitaing spicy food which I love!!!
