constantly hungry, can't gain any weight

Hey everyone. I'm a 22 year old male and I have a problem (atleast I think it's a problem..)

I am around 6'1, maybe 6'2 and I weigh about 145-150 lbs. I am slightly underweight and I can't seem to gain any weight no matter how much I eat. I am constantly hungry and I eat more than the average person. I am also very health concious, so I rarely eat junk food and I've been a vegetarian for about 4 years. I eat a variety of foods...tons of calories and I know I get more than enough protien, but nothing changes in my body weight.

I am always told that it's because I have a fast metabolism, but I'm thinking it might be something else. Is there a possibility that I have a digestive problem? I get extremely bad flatulence (foul smelling) from alot of the foods I eat. I believe that it's excessive because no one else I know gets like this even when they eat the same foods that I do...and when I say I get bad flatulence, I mean it. It's disgusting and has a very strong odour most of the time.

Recently I had blood work done to check my thyroid, and that test came back normal. My doctor suggested I go in for a breath test to see if I have a stomach ulcer (explaining the constant hunger), which I should probably go in for...

I don't know what to do. I feel that my doctor is very incompetent; He basically dismissed all of my problems and concerns and told me I was healthy and I'm sure that's what most doctors of conventional medicine will tell me. What a joke. I should probably find myself a naturopath doctor...

Can anyone here give me some insight on what could possibly be wrong with me? Any information would be great.

Thanks.

  • do you have any other symptoms?I had problems with constant hunger (and weight loss) with hyperthyroid--though you said you have been tested already.constant hunger is also a symptom of hyperglycemia. did your blood tests include diabetes testing also? maybe you could google diabetes for more info. and see if any symptoms warrant further testing.drs. are very difficult to deal with and I have also been told I was fine with each new dx. until I pushed for further testing myself.

  • Hi.When I had my blood work done, they did test me for diabetes and the results came back normal. I should look into it some more, though. I recently went to see a naturopath doctor, and I'm glad I finally made an appointment to see one. I trust her alot more than any other doctor I've been to. I will talk to her about it.Thanks for the reply.

  • Im 16, female, going through the same ***t as you've listed.....My doctor just blows me off, even makes some sort of unprofessional advances... to a sick girl! The freak...I woke up with blue lips this morning.... I was freaked out, feeling like I was going to pass out. It was so dire that I was drinking water from the faucet, trying so hard not to be laid out on the floor {my vision was darkening like i was going to faint.} Im not sure if I got too hot, or too cold. Over the past yr I've lost about 15-17 lbs to weigh now about 92. I was always thin, though. It was a sudden onset of symptoms. Excessive gas, loose bowels, or not being able to go at all for days. Blood in stool. Nausea. Having to go once, then five mins later, then five mins later. I had a partial lower GI done. I had to catch a cold to where they wouldn't want to give me the stuff to make me sleep cause I might not wake back up again.Don't ignore if this happens to you.........I've been sick for about 9 months, long enough to have a baby! And In a month Im finally getting all my tests done. Im getting the Cat scan on my belly again and im getting the upper and lower GI. My doctors have realized how serious this is. Sometimes I wonder if I should've gotten myself checked into the hospital. I wonder if I'll ever be the same again.Ive never gotten the tests done that your doctors wished to have you do. But I was given Prevacid for stomach ulcers and it did help me with the spicy foods and the sodas that I love to drink!I was thinking about trying herbal supplements, but be careful with that b/c you may not know what you're mixing if you have scripts. But I think they are very heavily underestimated. My doctor gave me Zelnorm and it made my stomach BURN and hurt.... and made me really very sleepy. So I said no and quit taking it. Now I need to hold on for another month.

  • Sudden weight loss, digestive problems, fatigue, can all be symptoms of food intolerence, one of the most common and yet least diagnosed issues known to modern medicine.. The original post has an especially telling symptom; the particularly foul smell of gas. This is often a sign of a digestive malfunction, usually related to a food allergy/intolerence.

  • The answer about food intolerance - allergy seems like a good thing to check out...however....I very well remember from health class that hungry all the time and losing weight can be from a tape worm. Don't think we don't get parasites of all sorts and doctors don't check for this. I had a tape worm when young. You can pick them up from anything to walking around barefoot, to accidently ingesting them, to having the eggs on your sheets (yes, true) and keep being re-infected. When I was younger, we were dewormed periodically....living in Fla and running around barefoot. One of symptoms is itching in the anal region. Also, can get from dogs, remember they are de-wormed from time to time. Can get from drinking water, swimming, not sure where else. Candida, also, from taking antibiotics. Fungus also. Supposedly Oil of Oregano works for this and I took an Amazon Herb called Arcozon which cleared up fungus on one of my toes...nothing else had worked...it works for fungus on your nails, by the way. Amazon Herbs also has products called Digestizon which is great and Fibrozon which is like an intestinal broom and people who have used it have had all sorts of stuff come out. No, I don't have a businesss interest in company....just that they are great products. Don't understand why so many people have these severe, same symptoms.

  • a parasite infection could be your problem. foul gas and inability to gain weght are 2 symptoms of this problem, which is almost always mis and undiagnosed with traditional doctors. Try a parasite cleans and taking probiotiv to help cleanse, rebuild and strengthen your colon/digestion system. Renew life makes a great one! also - take fiber digestion enzymes - to help break down/digest your vegestables.. which cause also causes gas! enzymedica makes a good one for fiber (cellulose)!

  • I certainly hope we can all shed some light on this situation.. I too have been unable to gain any weight (dropped from 185 to 135 in 2 years/23 years old now). I eat excessively at all hours of the day and night. I have even been drinking an extra 1500 calorie shake and it seems to not register at all. Despite being hungry it seems that my sugar also drops every 2 hours and I must eat something again, but what I eat must contain some protein as sugar alone does not suffice. I mainly try to eat complex carbs as to not to just spike my blood sugar. Also, I have the dehydration and I am not able to have any stimulants. I have had 2 doctors test for diabetes through blood test, and one through a 'key tones' test. A test for hyperthyriodism, HIV.. All come back saying you're healthy, just somewhat dehydrated, keep drinking water as you are. Also at times I am awakened from sleep due to dehydration to the point that my heart is racing and I have to quickly drink down a bottle of water to become 'stable' again. Also, many times there can be a lot of gas as if the food that I ate was processing at an overbearing rate, and also heating up as it seems my body is immeadetly burning any calorie intake. This is certainly inconvenient, I can't leave the house without water and juice as a backup. Possibly all the drinking of water is dropping sugar levels, but it is still not right to be so quick to change. I swore I had to have diabetes or hyperthyroidism.. I guess it's time to test for parasites and hypoglycemia next.. If anyone finds out what their own problem was feel free to share it, it seems as though these doctors know nothing and depend solely on the results of LabCorp.

  • I used to have very similar symptoms, at 6' 6" and 150lbs. I was known as 'hollow legs' because I could eat so much. My wind and stools smelt disgusting. Worse than room clearers. Then I was diagnosed as celiac. My appetite returned to normal (although I still need around 3000 calories a day to maintain my weight) and the smell disappeared. Get tested for celiac. Do not go gluten free first as any tests will not work.

  • Hello one and all,Yes definitely don't go gluten free prior to testing as it will give you false negatives even if you do have celiac disease or gluten intolerance. I would also like to note if all of you are going solely on TSH results telling you that you don't have a thyroid problem... then you should reconsider.TSH results are not as accurate for diagnosing Thyroid problems as a T4, Free T3 and Free T4 test, keep that in mind.If your TSH results are "within" the "normal" ranges but towards the bottom or top of the scale it still could be a Thyroid issue. Noting that most TSH scales are too vast and varied to uncover a true Thyroid problem, they merely hint at or tell a possible story. That being that you may or may not have a problem depending on the results, in all honesty I found the TSH tests to be almost worthless. I had my TSH test ran last month and I am "within" the "normal" ranges but towards the bottom of the scale, I am going to go in for T4, Free T3 and Free T4 testing next week. Samantha

    8 Surprising Facts About Cholesterol

Did you know that one in six US adults has high cholesterol?

  • I have the same problem. I eat 6 LARGE meals a day and am still hungry and don't gain weight. I also have extreme dehydration to the extent where my eyes are dry, my pulse is above 100, and I feel dizzy. I have been to many doctors who are stupid. The only thing primary care physicians know how to test for is hyperthyroidism, anemia and diabetes. Furthermore, if one goes into a walk-in clinic, they are treated by nurse practitioners instead of real doctors.I am starting to keep a journal that covers for each day: what I eat, what my pulse is, and (embarrassingly enough) how often I poop and what it looks like. If anything seems out of the ordinary, (such as how I probably am pooping more than 5x a day) I am going to refer myself to a specialist.

  • Hello everyone!I just thought for those of you with the thirst issues and anyone else with the same problems coming to this thread in the future my benefit from this info.I have been doing research on nutritional deficiencies over the passed while and you would be shocked at all the symptoms from being low on certain things can be... Anyways, for those with Excessive Thirst as a symptom, I thought I'd mention that Excessive Thirst is also a symptom of a Potassium Deficiency.Symptoms Of Potassium Deficiency: Acne, constipation, depression, edema, excessive water consumption, fatigue, glucose intolerance, high cholesterol levels, insomnia, mental impairment, muscle weakness, nervousness, poor reflexes... (As well as possibly others, I have no way to know if that is a complete list or not. Just a reference.)I'll post two links to some good sites for looking at what specific deficiency symptoms are. http://www.sixwise.com/newsletters/06/03/01/nutritional_deficiency_symptoms__amp_recommendations_for_24_common_nutritional_deficiencies.htmhttp://1stholistic.com/nutrition/hol_nutr-def-symptoms.htmJust a thought that you could check into those... Hope this helps someone!Thursday

  • Omg I just got off the phone with my doctors office to make an apt for the same thing. I'm a month away from being 21 and ever since I gave birth to my son last year I have had no luck keeping my weight on. I was 156 when I had him I'm now 98 pounds and look like an average 11 year old. I am always hungry and eat constantly but nothing fills me up the last two months have been the worst, my time in the bathroom has been uncomfortable, a little too easy going and constantly itchy afterwards with an unusual smell, I feel weak all the time I can hardle walk up to the third floor at my college without passing out i'm ver short of breath and my stomach is sucked in so bad if you saw me you would write me off as anorexic iono what to do anymore I hope my doctor doesn't blow it off as a fast metabolism because I've tried protein shakes before twice a day for 6 weeks and I lost two pounds! I know their is something wrong and since thyroid problems and cancer runs in my family I don't know what kind of doctorto turn to?

  • Hi. I used to have the same foul smelling flatus and do not gain weight despite the amount I eat. I stopped consuming soya products and the foul smelling flatus is gone. I assume I am allergic to soya.If you are experiencing these symptoms, try removing soya from your diet for a while.
