I am a male in my 30s. Just over three weeks ago I began experiencing burning in my urinary tract. I thought it would go away, but it persisted and got worse over the next few days. I went to a doctor, and he of course thought it might be an std. He gave me a 'cocktail' of antibiotics on the spot (to treat stds), as well as running urine and blood test. A few days later it got very extreme, painful and burning. I went back to see the Dr and he had the test back... normal. Then I was prescribed Ciprofloxacin, which I took for 10 days, with no change. They sent me for more blood work and urine test, including PSA, which all came back normal.

After all this, I went to see an Urologist who just thought I must have an std and prescribed me Doxycycline for 14 days. This is a lot on antibiotic that I have been taking, now with more in my system, and I feel like I am at the end of my rope. The only thing that gives any relief is Phenazo.

I am getting very nervous, depressed and stressed. It seems to be getting worse each day. Extremely uncomfortable. Burning deep within the urinary tract, through to the tip of my penis. There is no discharge, blood, cloudy urine, etc. Everything seems normal, other then the burning in the tract, which is worse after urinating... not during urination. Please help!

  • Hi,Burning urethra, that is not the bladder, better have your doctor check you for infections. But some things like onions can burn the urethra, if you eat a whole raw one that is. All test were done for infections, and all came back "normal".

  • Do you have a copy of all of your tests? If not, go back and see if you were tested for herpes 2. It likes to sit internally and not break out at times.

The pain and burning is with me all the time, to varying degrees, but worse about 5-10 mins after urinating.I am sinking, depressed and so anxious. I feel like I am at then end of my rope. I don't know what to do... and none of the antibiotics have worked.

  • I had something similar for a year and tests came back negative and positive sometimes. I finally went to a urologist who took a prostate serum sample. (finger in the butt) She said I had gram negative infection of my prostate which caused the other symptoms (urethritis, red sometimes, swollen tip of penis and reduced sexual drive...the bacteria that causes chlamydia. I have had IV of antibiotics four times (quinolones) with cipro and levaquin for four months and a round of themophenicol, finally about cured. Get the tests done or you could become sterile or get cancer...the antibiotics you are taking should clear it up but IV is what my Dr. said I needed to flush it out. Get your prostate checked with a serum test! If thats clear then it might be some form of herpes, which can be deceptive. If the serum test is clear then try some herpes medicine, it can't hurt you and if it helps, then you know what it is, but it sounds like chlamydia to me (number one std in N. America.)

Thank you for taking the time to respond. I sincerely appreciate it. As I said, this is driving me crazy, and its only been a few weeks. I couldn't imagine months of this! Forums have been sort of making it worse, as I read about guys dealing with simular issues for years. I don't know how that is even possible.I will take your advice about the serum sample.Thank you again.

  • Get your prostate checked with a serum test! I just realized, after googling it, that I have had serum test done. They did a PSA blood test for me, which was normal... back to the drawing board I guess :(

  • Since you have been on so many antibiotics you need to get your system back on track with PROBIOTICS...find a good one with acidophilus, bifidus, l rhamnosus, rheuteri, and others. This is crucial as your flora is unbalanced and this will compromise your immune system. You can find a probiotic at any good healthfood store or online. Sorry I don't have any other thoughts on diagnosis, except to rule out Herpes 2 like Monsterlove said. Best wishesDOM

  • You are welcome. I had various urine tests done but the serum test isn't PSA. They massage the prostate til they get the liquid from your prostate from the tip of your penis, that's the serum. That's why a simple swab test or urine test comes back negative. I had multiple urine and swab tests. I was at the end of my rope too. When chlamydia or gonorrea goes undiagnosed or misdiagnosed it goes deeper into the prostate and testicles. If your libido hasn't decreased and you don't have other symptoms, like increased sleep in your eyes, decreased vision, dizziness, blurred vision, rectal inflammation or irritation, liver spots on your skin, pneumonia, etc, then it might be herpes, but there shouldve been an initial herpes outbreak at some time in your life on your genitals or buttocks.if you have trouble because of the antibiotics then i suggest some yogurt it contains enough probiotics and its cheap, eh.Go to an STD clinic or a thorough urology hospital. I live in CHina and I tried to get tested in the US a year ago and then 6 months ago to no avail. Then I got help in SHanghai at a men's hospital. Thank God!

  • You have to ask for a blood test for herpes 2; you can have it without any blisters at all...best to check it out. You can try acupuncture for some pain relief, in the meantime, but you need to know if you have herpes. Many doctors are ignorant and will not consider it, but it can cause a lot of symptoms like you are having. If after your bloodwork, try acupuncture and a specialist.

Thank you again for a great reply, and for clearing up the issue around the test. Nope, I haven't had that done, and I will definitely check it out!I have begun taking probiotics. As a side note, its amazing that you couldn't get the help you needed in N.A., but you did receive it China. I can relate. Even when I went to a urologist, he didn't even examine me (other the to make sure there was nothing visible). He just insisted it must be an std and gave me more antibiotics. My libido has decreased, but I think mainly due to discomfort and stress. And I don't have the other symptoms you mentioned, including I never had a herpes outbreak. I have no visible signs of anything. No redness, no discharge, nothing... only the discomfort and burning in my urinary track, worse after urinating. Thanks again!!

  • A thought :Highly concentrated urine from dehydration will cause your burning symptoms ,your urine will be dark yellow (normal would be light gold)and the urine smell would be strong any number of reason for dehydration like some water pills but try more clear fluids to dilute urine.Wow all those antibiotics must have your digestive tract moving really well

Thanks for the tip, but it isn't dehydration. I am drinking around 3-5 liters of water a day, and urine passes totally clear. And yes... digestion is moving a little too fast, if you know what I mean.

  • Well the other things I would think of are narrowing of the urethra, yeast infection, cleared up by antifungals (diflucan)you can get this from a woman and be asymptomatic.

  • Well the other things I would think of are narrowing of the urethra, yeast infection, cleared up by antifungals (diflucan)you can get this from a woman and be asymptomatic.I went for more test yesterday, including a swab. He stuck the swab inside my penis, and when it reached one of the spots that has been burning it hurt incredibly. Ever since that time, it has been hurting really bad. I have been taking Phenazo, to numbed the pain, but it isn't working. To top all of this off, I told my fiancee about an indiscretion that happened before all of these symptoms. Like an idiot I went to a 'massage parlor'. There was intercourse and a condom was used. This is the only explanation I can think of, and I had to be honest with her. You can imagine she is pretty upset. My life is crumbling around me. I am lost and I don't know what to do. All of these test are coming back normal, yet... there must be something. If its related to that encounter... I do not know. I don't know what to do...

  • there shouldve been an initial herpes outbreak at some time in your life on your genitals or buttocks. quote] That is incorrect information. Half of the people with herpes have not had an outbreak, necessitating a request for a blood test for herpes 2 specific (not herpes 1/2). Many times, the tests for all STDs are not handled properly, givning a false negative. That could be happening.

I have now given swab test, but when I ask for H2 he said he could only give the test if there are sores, which there are none. He didn't mention a blood test for it.
