Coughing up small pieces of lung tissue

I have had a cough for about 5 days. It seems to be slowing down now. The coulgh produced a lot of foul smelling putty colored flegm from both my nasal cavities and from my lungs. The cough was a 24 hour a day ordeal and was violent. On 5 occasions I coughed up very small pieces of lung tissue (1/4" long). I had lung cancer 24 years ago and survived because of early detection. My doctor will be in her office in three days.
My question is, is there any other reason except lung cancer to be coughing up bits of tissue??? The tissue appears healthy by the way, in other words not gangrenous or anything like that.

  • The only thing I can think of is lung abscess... but sure you would have noticed that...Sorry I can't be of more help, hope you'll be OK.
