Hey guys, I have no idea what is up with me but i would appreciate it if you gave me your opinions on the subject.

About two years ago, I started getting this very intense earpain (right ear). This was on and off. I saw an ENT specialist and she said it was over accumulation of wax. a couple of months ago it worsened and i started getting really bad headaches on my right side. The pain is weird, it's like my ear, eye and head ache at the same time. It really hurts and sometimes it feels like a burning sensation on that side of my head. I saw another ENT specialist who said that my ears are perfect. In September '07 i changed the prescription of my glasses and by December the same year i already had vision issues which was a bit too soon.

And also around the same time (2 years ago), i noticed that i behaved strange. I found it hard to concentrate in class. my head felt fogged up. My grades slipped by a really great margin and i found it hard to understand stuff. I thought it was all normal adolescent behaviour but it's getting worse. i can barely complete my assignments anymore. I feel like am getting more stupid by the second. I have been to a psychologist but nothing chaged. I didn't include this issue when talking to the doctors but now i think that they are all connected.

What do you guys think the problem is? thanks:)

  • Hi there, I sometimes experience something similar (but perhaps not to the degree of pain that you describe). It is like a prickling sensation which I can feel on any part of my body, but mostly I get it spreading from my neck, up one side of my face and therefore making my ear and eye ache. My skin is tender to touch, and sometimes my gland on that side feels a little swollen. It tends to not last past a day. I'm not sure what it is called exactly (dr had no idea) but I have seen the symptom described with Fibromyalgia, which I do have so presume it is just another fantastic symptom of that! However I don't experience a high pain level, it's more a dull headache/eyeache/earache/sore throat. Fibro does also cause 'brain fog', however you don't seem to describe any other symptoms of it. Not really a solution but maybe it will help you out. To me it feels a bit like nerves reacting so perhaps it is something similar there. Let us know how you go! Best of luck!

  • A couple things come to mind, but obviously I'm not your doctor so you need to get checked out- hopefully by a neurologist. It sounds like your headaches might be migraines- especially if they last a while... I get them not just in my head, but behind my eye and ear. Very painful. Face pain is often a symptom of migraine. In addition to headaches, i also had a problem with brain fog/spaciness and fatigue. Ultimately I was diagnosed with two things that could explain these symptoms:1. Hashimoto's Encephalopathy is a rare complication of autoimmune thyroiditis that can present with migraine-like headaches and brain fog. It is not very well known and is diagnosed by elevated thyroid antibodies (to thyroperoxidase and/or thyroglobulin) even if hormone levels are okay (and many people with HE have normal hormone levels). I also discovered that my gland was full of micro-nodules... Most doctors and neurologists don't know about HE yet.2. patent foramen ovale. There has been some suggestion that patients who have migraines have a higher rate of PFO's, which are small holes between the atria in your heart. When you exert yourself or strain, the hole opens up and deoxygenated blood goes from the right side of your heart to the left. They don't know for sure how this relates to the headaches, but I suspect that the low oxygen content in the blood somehow irritates the blood vessels in the brain and triggers the headache.Your headaches might also be cluster or tension headaches. A neurologist might help you get properly diagnosed.I hope they can give you a more definitive diagnosis than you have now. I really hope your headaches go away.Best Wishes.

  • I am going through this with my 12 year old son. He has been complaining of ear pain, including the outer ear, and the ENT doc has said his ears are fine. He had a CT scan, which was also clear, but still the pain persists. He is scheduled for an MRI tomorrow. He is fatigued, and not attending school. 2 months ago he had mono and strep, and he has not felt the same since. I am checking all physical symptoms with the docootrs, and have set up an interview with a counselor on Monday, for me and then he will see them. Have your symptoms improved, or have you gotten a diagnosis yet? Good luck

Have your symptoms improved, or have you gotten a diagnosis yet? Good luck db.. im going to suggest that your son probably has "post viral syndrome". I hope he hasnt got full blown "chronic fatigue immunity dysfunction syndrome" (CFIDS) also called chronic fatigue syndrome but at this point i'd say Post viral syndrome. Some say post viral syndrome and CFS are the same thing but years ago they were viewed as separate things.. and if it's post viral syndrome, that will clear up after MANY months.. He may still be sick up to 6 mths or so. Care needs to be taken in this time eg plenty of rest whenever needed, to lessen the chances of it going into CFIDS. (This is where the situation esp for children overlap with CFIDS and postviral syndrome.. as a child can be given a CFS diagnoses after being ill for just a few months, where an adult usually isnt unless they have been ill for 6 mths). 10% of mono cases end up going to post viral syndrome cases and then into CFIDS cases. CFIDS is one of the leading causes of children missing a lot of school. In adults 75% of CFIDS cases are in females.. but in children it happens equally in both sexes. IF it is CFIDS.. being a child, he has a greater chance of recovery than if he was an adult (adults rarely fully recover.. CFIDS is an extremely serious illness). 20% of ones with CFIDS have ear aches as one of it's symptoms http://wwcoco.com/cfids/bernesx.html (earaches have been put into the neurological catagory at the site, (i myself aint sure why..but i guess cause no cause can often be found) which shows symptoms and percentage of ones with CFIDS who get the symptom based on proper studies). It may be hard to get a diagnoses for him but i suggest you to suggest post viral syndrome to the doctor seeing he had the mono not too long ago. As far as CFIDS go.. 95% of doctors are not up to date with the latest info on it so myths often are predominating there. The CDC say that in 80-90% of CFS cases the patient is sick and undiagnosed often with doctors telling patients it's all in their heads (or mistakening diagnosing them for other things eg depression). This is all due to doctors not being very familiar with CFS and the different presentations of this illness and hence most are not comfortable to give out a CFIDS diagnoses. I hope this isnt the case but if the post viral syndrome (which im fairly sure by your sons history he may have) develops into CFIDS.. you will find your son gets a lot more symptoms than just fatigue, malaise, ear ache .. eg food or stomach issues may start arising, sleep issues, concentration issues, headaches etc along with more sore throats and possible low grade fever (which at a later point may go to a low body temp).

I think mine is triggered off from my jaw, as this is where my pain Starts - When i eat, gargle, even rest my head on the side starts the pain off, and then.. sometimes its just random. What I have similiar is the pain starts at the right side of my Jaw but then moves up the right side of my face to the area under my eye, just beside (inside) my ear and then the worst pain is just slightly above my ear (the headache). Either way I'm going to visit my local doctor tomorrow so here's hoping. Just some idea of who I am, i'm 19, male, really healthy with no problems before in my life. I've also had a lot of dental work recently (3 times a week!) but they were just fillings and stuff, i've had an assumption this jaw pain is set off directly from where i had a pretty bad tooth ache. Mm

  • Hey I found what was wrongFor me there was a nerve that runs (and branches off) from the brain, to the ear, to under the eye and to the jawThis has been damaged and so is the reason for the pain(probably from the dentist when they stuck the needle deep in the back of my mouth)A treatable drug is TEGRETOL (used mostly for those with seizures) which must be prescribed to by a Doctor, so just see a doctor :P

I have many other symptoms but dont feel like typing all of them lol. I have a appointment with a neurologist on this monday coming up... i am getting an EEG test to see if anything is wrong. If i were u i would go to a neurologist and insist on getting a CT scan, MRI, or whatever is best... U shouldnt wait on it if its not going away. I have a question do u take any pain relievers? If so do they take away ur headaches or do they linger??

The ear pain was very intense, it would often wake me from a sound sleep. It can also feel like a foreign body sensation, like you could pull something out of your neck. It can cause dizziness by pressing on your artery in your neck. I had instant relief after surgery. Good luck to you.

  • I can't be sure - I have, quite simply, no medical training and I am not aware of your circumstances - but from your symptoms, I might also guess a head injury or a concusssion. Concussions can end up causing headaches as well as make it difficult to concentrate. Other signs are a loss of balance, motor coordination, or ringing in the ears.

He gave me Z-pack for 5 days and lo and behold, my burning sensation is back again. It seems to go from eat to right eye and the top of the head. It feels as if the top of the head is soar. I feel the burning sensation. I have again taken the appointment with the doctor again today. Please let me know what you found out the problem was. Thanks

  • I have had the same problem and I have researched this enough to what I believe it is. This is a sinus infection... It's called Sphenoid Sinusitis.. If you look this up I am sure your symptoms will match. Most physicians fail to diagnose this.. So you may want to mention it to them...

  • I agree that you could have Hashimoto's Encephalopathy so please go to an endocrinologist and see if your thyroid level is off as well. If it is ask yourself if you have any family members with thyroid problems. Hashimoto's is not a thyroid problem. it is an auto immune disorder that attacks your thyroid. In rare cases it also attacks brain neurons, making it a rare neuro-endocrine auto immune disorder. the weakness, feeling drunk, headaches, and disorientation could be a sign. If you do not have elevated thyroid please look into lymes etc.my story:I am a 27 year old female with relatively good health. My mother has Hashimoto's. Three weeks ago I started having ear pain and really bad daily headaches. My doc told me was a sinus infection prescribed me meds. I took all the antibiotics as instructed. still had pain and headaches. soon after I had trouble with balance, dropping objects, and speech problems (finishing sentences and stuttering). I then started doing strange things (putting salt in the fridge or using dishwashing gloves instead of oven mits). I was told that my thyroid was a 7.2 so they put me on 75 mg of levo. in about one week I was having an easier time walking but still had intermittent memory problems and shooting pains, chest pain, and no matter what my ears and neck still always bother me. I am still awaiting diagnosis but I strongly believe I have HE especially because my mother has hashiomo's that I may have inherited from her although she did not have the symptoms I do which would explain the HE.
