Strang stuff in ear (pictures included.. warning!)

Hello everybody,
I posted this same problem of mine on webMD (directly into an ear doctor's forum) and it was taken down with absolutely no reply. That's kind of messed up, if you ask me. I guess PhD's don't account for a good personalities! =P lol

Long story short - I have had a horrible earache for two weeks now, went to docs, they said it was cotton. Went to better doc, they said it was a growth in my ear. Most painful thing I've ever been through, not to mention the hearing loss in my right ear when it randomly decides to clog itself (not wax). I don't swim, so it's definatly not swimmer's ear.
After rinsing out my ear many times, I finally got some pieces of SOMETHING out a few days ago, but it still hurts a lot so I don't know what to think. Is it healing? Is there more in there? Well aside from all that, I have no idea what that SOMETHING is that came out.

Can somebody please help me identify that SOMETHING(s)?

Complete with a soda can tab for size comparison! ;)
A little warning... the pictures aren't very pretty.
(I'm posting them as links so you don't accidently see them if you don't want to) :)

  • I've "diagnosed" myself with swimmer's ear after consulting wikipedia. Just going to keep flushing my ear, then drying it out with a blowdryer, and adding eardrops as often as I can. Just FYI incase anybody else ever has the same question I had.

  • I'm no doctor, but if that came from my ear I'd be putting it in a jar and asking my doctor to send it off to pathology!!It looks like some sort of fatty tissue? Ears are too close to the brain to be mucking around. Go back to your doctor and ask to see a specialist if he can't find a cause. Good Luck! :)

  • Did you save that stuff? I ask because it looked a lot like this weird thing that was about the size of a grape (YES a grape) that came out of my nose. it can be normal, but i thought it looked like condensed mucous around it, but there was something dark - you may need to (sorry to gross out) squoosh it and see what that is. if it's dried mucous, you may have a sinus leakage into your ear, but if it's something ELSE, it could be scarier.swimmers ear is, INMO, too generic for what that was...good luck!

Now my ear has been feeling clogged for about 2 days and i asked my girlfriend to look in my ear and she says she sees a similar zit. What can this be?

  • Whatever it is you need to get to a ENT quickly. This is definitely not normal and it does not look like many people can help. I have never seen this type of tissue. The black spot is a bit alarming.

  • I know this post is old, But did you ever find out what it was??? I have the exact same stuff coming out of my ear???I also have the same stuff come out of my ear. The earwax remover helps to get rid of it. I would say stricktly stay away from the swimmers ear stuff it oonly makes the problem worse.

  • I also had the same type of condensed mucous material in my ear. The doctor told me it was an infection that stemmed from using cotton swabs. She thought that maybe some of the cotton had fallen into the ear canal caused an infection and created the blockage. I am no longer using cotton swabs but have still removed more of the stuff from my ear weeks after the appointment in which they assumed they'd flushed it all out. I have had major sinus issues in the past, and I actually believe there might be more of a sinus drainage or buildup issue.

  • I see this is old, but if I can help someone, after I became hypoglycemic, I had several ear infections. the first one {i'd never had one} started with a clog, then pain. The doctor said you should come righy away! The stuff in mt ear was horrifying! Worse tha that! Add more black and green!! I had antibiotics and drops {drops were for pain steroid?] Must be an infection what kind of doctor did you see? wow If you feel something starting. the similison drops could prevent it.Complete with a soda can tab for size comparison! ;)A little warning... the pictures aren't very pretty. • I dug the same goo out of my ear last night (with more black+red stuff in there) and today I went to see a doctor about it. He told me I had fungal ear infection, which cannot be treated with some eardrops. So, go see a doctor ASAP and follow his instructions thoroughly, because fungi are nasty and it may take several weeks to get rid of them...
