I have had ache extending down from the buttocks thru the legs for the past 2 years. GP,pain specialists, mri, circulation tests and a visit to Mayo Clinic failed to determine a diagnosis. It is difficult to sit or sleep but does not bother when I walk or move about. Muscles seem to tighten almost to spasm with a little ache in the joints as well.

  • Does the pain go down the back of your legs or is it along the lateral side of your leg? Are both legs equally involved? Do you get a "nervy" sensation or electrical sensation? DOM

  • It is hard to discribe but is probably "nervy" in what I sense is an achey tightness down the legs and also felt in the joints as well as the muscle..When I sit there is a nervy vibration feeling in the lower pelvic area extenting down the backside and thru the groin. Both legs are involved but the right one seems to be more prominent.

  • It sounds like the pain is coming from the sacroiliac joint. A physio would be able to give exercises to strengthen that area. They may also suggest acupuncture for pain relief. If that does not work then steroid injections are sometimes given. Pilate‚Äôs style exercise is the best option if this is what is causing the problem, but make sure you get a diagnosis and a proper instructor for the exercise not someone who has only done a weekend course as this could make things worse.

  • I've had two seperate exercise therapy sessions with professionals at a hospital, one included pool type exercises. Only slight relief as it appears to only slightly sooth the symtoms.

  • I recommend acupuncture over most physical therapy as this treatment can get deep into the buttock area and reach the sciatic nerve. Most chiropractic, and physio can't get deep enough to address the problem. Because you have a chronic condition, it may take a few treatments to see results. But you should see relief and if you can give it 6-8 treatments I would think it would really help you. Visit www.acufinder.com to find a practitioner near you. I have treated sciatic pain in my clinic and patients have reported much relief. I had severe pain 15 years ago when I had my first acupuncture treatment, and it was such a dramatic improvement I decided to study and become a practitioner. Best wishesDOM

Hello, I am a licensed Physical Therapist and treat this condition often. Your injury is almost certainly related to the Lumbar Spine. You should see a Board Certified, Fellowship Trained Spine Specialist. If your pain is down both legs, it is almost certainly from the spine. It could be a Central Canal Stenosis or Degenerative Disc Disease. If it were coming from the Sacroiliac Joint, you would have pain on one leg and not the other (unless you somehow had bilateral Sacroiliac Joint problems which is not likely as it usually occurs unilaterally). -Chris

  • Have you had spinal MRI and brain MRI - been thru something very similar - diagnosis was "Chiari I Malformation" with "Tethered Spinal Cord" syndrome - was also diagnosed with sacroliac joint disfunction.
