interrupted cycles

I am 38 years old. Up until the last three or four years, I had a regular 5 day cycle that was moderate flow and had no symptoms of pms. For the last few years, I've suffered increasing pms symptoms and now have a three day flow, that varies considerably. This month, I had a massive amount of pain, most of the bleeding was concentrated in the first two days, and only spots on the third. I've had a lot of weight gain in the last three years as well, and I'm wondering if this is early menopause or something more sinister. Any help or advice would be great.
