I have received the results of my Cytology (negative thank goodness) and my CT Scan is back. It shows Medullary sponge kidneys and small renal stones - small renal cyst on left kidney. I have done some research on Medullary sponge kidneys, here is some information:

Medullary sponge kidney is a congenital disorder of the kidneys characterized by a cystic dilatation of the collecting tubules in one or both kidneys. It has been estimated to occur with a prevalence of between 1 in every 5,000-10,000 individuals in a population1. In most cases, medullary sponge kidney affects only one kidney, in which case kidney function is usually preserved and individuals may be asymptomatic. However, these individuals are at increased risk for nephrolithiasis (kidney stones) and urinary tract infection.

I will still be going on November 2 to have my Cystoscopy (spelling?). It is nice to know though that I have an answer to my UTI's (Just recently had another made 7 this year - 5 in Five Months). I will also see what the doctor say about this and if there will be any further investigating - or if I will just need to be put on long term antibiotic treatment.

I hope this will give others information on why they keep getting UTI's.

Thank you for whomever reads this - i will keep you updated!

MM :)

  • Thanks Fred! Wow it has been a while since I posted. Well, I had my Cytology and everything was fine, they still can't figure me out - I got the Urologist not agreeing with the Radiologist - in other words, he does not agree with my CT Results. So now I have my Primary looking over my CT Results with another radiologist. I just want to know what is wrong that's all - is it that hard? Anyway, knock on wood I haven't had a UTI in a couple months which is good, and the Vesicare is really helping me, so I am very releived by that! Ok - will post when my Primary talks to me! MM :)

  • Wow - it has been a while (again) - Well, I went to the urologist for a follow-up and they are going to do another CT scan in 6 months. I had another Urinary Tract infection just a week after visiting the doctor - this one seemed worst than the others - It seemed like I was in more severe pain than the others - the doctor gave me Cipro (antibiotic) and the next day I was almost back to normal. My husband is frankly upset that they can not figure out what is going on in there - the urologist isn't to concerned about the Medullary Sponge Kidneys or small Kidney Stones. I go to see my Primary Healthcare Provider on the 24th of this month and my husband wants me to talk to him about seeing a specialist in Boston (Boston General) - I think that may be a good idea - it just doesn't seem right. Symptoms:UTI's (8 in a year)Bowel ProblemsLower Back PainWeight Gain I have gone up two pant sizes in the last 6 months - hello! I eat like I always have - and I have never gone over 135lbs unless I was pregnant - I am now up to 152 pounds! (No I am not pregnant) Maybe I am starting Menopause? I am 42 - if that is it I would be happy only because finally I would have an answer! MM

  • well I am new here but seems like belong well lol . I have chronic urine infection and no matter what we do we cant stop them ! I now have a portacath in my chest (central vein line) for easy acess to a permanent vein as have IV antibiotics so ***n frequently myveins have collapsed. Used to respond well to oral antis but bugs got too darnn smart and now even a lot of the iv ones dont work ! Already had bladder out so am guessing kidneys will be next if we cant stop these ***n infections, now that have no bladder to serve as a half way point, the infections just go straight to the poor ol kidneys. Any advice be great !

  • Hi bevvsy, Did you have a cat scan done of your abdomen? They should be able to tell if anything is wrong with your kidneys by this. Good Luck!
