First a little background on my condition.

1. I had my first kidney stone in 2000 (17yrs old) had lazer lythotrypsy to remove 3mm stone in left kidney. Some of the symptoms were severe flank pain, vomitting and fever.

2. Since 2000 have had about 12 more lazer lythotrypsy performed to remove stones of the same size.

3. I am prone to many almost constant kidney and bladder infections most the time with fever, nausea and achy feeling all over body with severe and dull flank pain on both sides (although it is more common in the right side).

4. In 2004 my urologist diagnosed me with cystinuria (unable to break down protein causing cystic stones).

5. Since December 2006 I've had several blood tests done all of which came back normal. Had flu like symptoms in January this year thought it was just the flu. Achy body, diarrhea, fever, loss of appetite, lost 15 pounds in 6 days, couldn't hardly make it to the bathroom to urinate I was so sick but also had very bad flank pain both sides thought from dehyrdration. Because all my blood tests came back negative for anything (stones or infection) thought I just had the flu.

6. Had the same symptoms again starting Monday and made it to the hospital today Feb. 7, 2007. I had a catscan and a whole panel of blood tests. All blood tests came back normal but my ct came back and before the dr. even diagnosed me could tell my kidneys were both swollen and enlarged. Sent me home with the same antibiotic I always take Levaquin and vicodin ( a lot of good that does). The dr. said that all she could think of is that is a kidney infection but that my blood count should be high and it was normal. Could be underlying infection, but wouldn't that show up in all the tests I have before this? I've had 2-3 since December 23, 2006.

7. Also last week my regular dr. found out I have an irregular heart beat(but I was also born with 2 mitral vavle prolapse or heart murmurs).

8. December 2006 ER diagnosed me with left ovarian cyst, small.

Does anyone have any idea what I should maybe be looking out for, something that blood tests might not reveal. I have no stones, and I haven't for a few months at least now. I just cannot understand why I would have and as the dr. said herself, severly swollen and enlarged kidneys? I've been trying to get all the help I can for 7 years now and I just keep getting worse. Vicodin does nothing for the pain, antibiotics do nothing for my so called infections. Please somebody help if you can!

  • Are you going to a nephrologist? Have you had UTI symptoms? Have you had a urine culture?I am going through a similar thing, although I have not had a cat scan to see if my kidneys are swollen. I had a UTI for 2 months, then it went away, then I got the back pain. I had blood and urine tests which didn't show bacteria, I think because I was on antibiotics. Maybe the blood tests are normal because you are on antibiotics?Anyhow, let me know if you find anything out. Good luck!

  • I am not going to a nephrologist yet, been trying to get referred for months now. I've had urine culture, normal there too. I haven't been on antibiotics since I think the last week of November 2006. As for the blood tests my blood count wasn't even high like it would be with infection. Thank you for responding, and good luck. ~Natalie

  • I will definitely look into the tubular acidosis although all my tests which they ran a whole panel came back negative for the potassium levels being off and so on. One thing I did find weird was all my tests came back normal... that's a first. I'm seeing the doctor today ahead of schedule because I cannot bare the pain and discomfort anymore. I will bring it up with my dr. though because I'm sure we all know how ER doctors can be.As for the cystinuria support group I added myself to that right before I read your message but thank you! I've needed something like that for a long time.

  • No problem my husband is suffering with pain almost weekly. We no longer have health insurance and the number of tests that the Dr's want to run over and over again is ridiculous. I hope all goes well with you and your dr's visit today. Remember to be loud if you have to some of these Dr's don't realize what it is to have kidney stones and the amount of pain you all have to deal with. Good Luck Hope

  • I forced my way into the Dr. , my kidneys have a bubble in them... and the ovarian cyst that I have has grown putting so much pressure on my bladder than it is backing up urine into my kidneys. I have to see a gyno for this now and possibly have a stent put in. Won't know anymore until I see the gyno. Until then I'll just be in bed.

  • So sorry to hear that. My husband has a cyst on his right kidney that the Dr's insist causes no pain. He has passed about 15 stones in the past 5 years and has a hernia mesh patch that was put in and diverticulitis. It sucks the way these dr's just push people off when it comes to pain  . If only it were them or someone they love...... Get rest and try to be well in the mean time take your pain meds and try to relax:) . Be wellHope

  • Im not sure if your still having these problems. I have had a side ache on my left side for about 2 months. I went to the doctor and they told me I just pulled a muscle. The pain never went away. I went back to the doctor and they said the didn't know what it was but would give me an ultrasound. I went in for the ultrasound and the doctor said I had a small cyst and my left overy my left kidney was a little sollowen to. She was not sure why my kidney would be sollowen because all my blood and urian test came back normal. I went in to get a MRI and have not found out the results yet. I'm very nervous and wanting to know what this is.

I would suggest that you find yourself a good nephrologist. :) Until then I hope you stay as well as can be expected, unfortunetly our healthcare system cares more about lawsuits and insurance than there patients.:( Be well my friendHopeCome visit me at http://www.kasamba.com/beautifulone37

  • While many things could cause your symptoms, I would ask your doctors about the possibility of autoimmune problems, and to get tested for some of those, since you don't seem to have mentioned that the doctors discussed that possibility. I would ask your doctor(nephrologist) about a kidney biopsy. I hope you are feeling better!

  • You have symptoms that seem unrelated but they are - sucralose poisoningchlorine poisoning- this is what sucralose is=chlorine. Please search the youtube for movies and you will find information and the symptoms you are having and stop eating it!Read labels because it is in everything - it is also called Splenda!! Also steer clear from Aspartame, another poison. There is also a facebook group about Aspartame. Search!! Your symptoms will go away slowing meanwhile do not eat any chlorine- filter your water with Brita or a filter - do not buy bottled water because some of it has reacted (old) to heat and age. Drink filtered or distilled water and pee out everything you have been eating asap.Get better, glarstout

  • I agree.Don't use Splenda at all! I like to say sucralose, not Splenda, because that is what Splenda is. And it is in a lot of stuff Sadly, the package doesn't have to say Splenda, or diet, to have sucralose in it. You have to read labels. So, you might still be using it and don't even know it! A lot of people, including myself, have gotten/are getting sick from it. Many people don't get any symptoms at all Sucralose is poison. It ruined five years of my life. I had a laundry list of medical problems while taking it. I went to several doctors. I had a dozen different tests. I was told that I had a number of different problems. I was on different medication for many years. The slogan, "Made from sugar..." is very misleading. Splenda might be made from sugar, but it is far from sugar. The resulting chemical is a class of chemicals called organochloride. Organochlorides are typically poisonous. carbon monoxide - made from oxygen so its like a breath of fresh air. • I have been having the same problem for about 2 1/2 years, although I have never had a kidney stone or any type infection, bladder, kidney, uti.. any.. My kidneys and ureters seems to alternate swelling. I've had several CT scans and ultrasounds that shows the right a few times and alternately the left. Finally after fighting for 2 1/2 years that something is not right they've decided to look further into it. The urologist explained that where the ureters and kidneys meet there may be scar tissue usually from several infections and stones, which they do a surgical procedure to scrap the tissue off. So that might be helpful in your case. I've never had infections or any stones and I was told the swelling doesn't happen on both sides, so their at a loss for now and sending me for more testing at a specialized hospital and a Dr. who has more experience. All my Blood work has always come back fine as far as kidney functions and everything else. My symptoms are flank pain, in both sides at different times for sometimes as long as a month to a month and a half. No fever but constantly nausea's. Had a specialized CT scan done yesterday ( that was not pleasant)So we'll see how that comes back. Good luck with finding out. Dr's can be so difficult and just blow you off. This is the 2nd time they've done it to me and I had to fight for years both times for them to say " ok maybe something is worng" and then to find out thats the case. And it's been 4 different Dr's.

He has had a kink in the euretur removed at age two with 35 percent function that has decreased. I was just wondering if they shared anything new with you. I too had a cyst on my ovary the pain was in my bladder it was horrible. I did see a Gyno also he opted to biopsy it and remove it and other cysts (polly cystic ovarian syndrome) no fun prone to alot of other disorders ...horomonal and achey periods , pre disposed to diabetes to name a few. Well hope that helps you with some info...and they eblated my uterus ( no more periods) liked the idea at first but my hormones plumeted. They say its not possible ....but im here to say it is...hair fall out and dry skin and no breasts....i was told i had endometrial tissue and it would avoid cancer. I was also told that the heavy bleeding would cease . It has. Alot of ovarian pain and menstrual pain gone too. The bladder region pain also is gone. Yet my stomach is so bloated i look ten months pregnant. What a world....Good luck to you and thanks for your input...thanks to everyone here....we are all here together and communication is part of humanity....Thank you all...

  • hi there, i have had kidney problems for apox 5 years, it took 3 years and 22 visits to doctors for smart and reliable doc to finnaly give me a abdominal scan. found stone in left kidney and cyst in right, i thought i was going to die the pain was so bad and constant. i couldnt believe the doctors just fobbed me off and tryed to give me antidepressants and excercise plans. they dont listen and just told me to take panadole, which i did and nearly gave me a heart attack and my liver was so painful and stiff. i waited 3 months to see a kidney specialist and had blood and urine tests only for them to tell me i was fine. so i turned to the internett and found andyone who has kidney problems should change diet from too much acidic foods to alkaline foods which balance the body and support the kidneys. also the best thing i did for myself was drink cranberry juice at least 3 times per day as cranberrie juice is the only thing that will take waste out of the kidney on its own. it sort of sucks the crap out and helps the kidneys to rid of any waste where the kidneys arenot working properly. i still have the stone and luckily it is not stuck in the tubes but high up in the pyramid somewere. i still have pain when my partner puts his arm over my waist laying down at night. i still have pain upper stomach both sides, they tryed to tell me at first it was medularry sponge kidney something you are either born with and dont notice till your older. suppose to not be any pain but they obviously cant feel my body and whats going on. sometimes the blood doesnt show any signs, but scans and urine tests should show up abnormalities, but sometimes dont until its late in the season. i just live with it and dont trust or rely on doctors in any way, they dont care, nor have the time to fix anyone without proof. so we battle on and look for answers elsewere like these sites.i feel i shall die from some kidney problem and by the time they see their proof it will be too late. But people know their bodies and pain and symptoms are real and not in our heads. doctors dont cure, they treat symptoms, they hand out pills and potions to relieve pain. but pain is an indicator of something wrong. best off going to natural therapies where they will try to cure instead of treating the symptom. but like i said, i was desperate and very sick, i prayed alot, and drank cranberrie juice, i got better but not cured. when i drink alcohol i get sick in the top of my tummy sides and cant drink very much for it to get that way, so i avoid alcohol. anything with pottasium is also bad too much potatos or bananas can hurt you if you have too much for its hard for the kidneys to rid of pottasium plus it can affect your blood preasure and then heart. my bones hurt everyday from dirty blood, i get dizzy always and was very itchy all over at one stage. my eyes sting, mild sweeling of the hands and feet. my blood presure is currently 140/90 alittle high, yet nothing to alarm my doctor about. they think im a hypercondriac because the symptoms arnt backed up by proof in my blood. thing is, i know the truth, and ive seen others also explain their pains and the doctors fobbing them off because the blood was alright. well todays population doesnt give the care we need as we use to by our doctors, there are too many people to see and help so the ones who get the most are the ones at severe stages, were they have proof in their blood. its up to you to help yourself by searching the nett with people the same and getting help with those who have learnt through experience.

  • IDK if you ever found out what was wrong with you or if you still suffer.. if you haven't. You should make a doctors appointment to have your urine checked for sediment. A person who has a kidney or urinary tract disorder usually sheds more cells. Could be something more than just a UTI.. & I'm not sure if you had a urine culture or urine analysis i can't remember exactly what i just read.. but you should also get a creatinine clearance—a more accurate test—can be approximated from a blood sample using a formula that relates the creatinine level in the blood to a person's age, weight, and sex. Determining creatinine clearance more precisely requires an accurately timed urine collection in conjunction with the blood creatinine determination. The level of blood urea nitrogen (BUN) can also indicate how well the kidneys are functioning. & x-rays usually aren't reliable for detecting kidney disorders. see about getting a computed tomography. If all else fails i would seriously consider getting a kidney biopsy to get a thorough look inside to see what your body is actually doing with everything.
