Recurring UTI no bacteria present on multiple occasions

I have had problems with UTI's since I was little. Now, for the last 4 years, I get about 6 or 7 per year. I have gone to the gynocologist and have been tested for every STD and all tests are negative. They also did a biopsy of my uterus walls to make sure there was nothing wrong. I have seen a urologist and he did an ultrasound and urine cultures. They cant find anything wrong. I have a prescription for a sulfa based antibiotic and vesicare tablets to take when I start to feel the onset of symptoms.

For the last 2 years, I have been having worse problems than ever. I get my period for about 11 days each month and now when I get a UTI (or whatever it really is) I have bad pain in my abdomen and almost a bloating feeling like when you get your period. It even hurts to sit down. And now my urine smells real weird for the last 5 or 6 infections. The prescriptions are still working, but I live in fear of the symptoms everytime I have sex, or dont drink enough fluids, or get my period. Anything seems to cause the "feeling" I get when the uti starts. I know its coming before I get any real pain or urgency to urinate.

The urologist mention IC, but it just doesnt seem like it matches my symptoms enough. Does anyone know what this could be? Or is anyone having the same problem? My husband is beginning to think I may just be crazy..even though he mention how stinky my urine is...(so I know I am not just imagining it)

  • IC is only recently becoming more studied, and not much is known about what causes it or exactly what it is, though it seems to me (I have had it for 4 years now) that it is an inflammation of the urinary tract. Different things cause flare-ups for different people, and every person has different types of flare-ups, with some people having very mild flares, and others having flares so bad they cannot get out of bed. This definitely sounds like IC. I was on high-dose pyridium for a while but it stopped working. Started taking Aleve (naproxen) for it. It dulls the pain a bit, and definitely helps with the swelling/inflammation. Ibuprofen works too, but I can't take it because my family has a history of kidney failure and Ibuprofen can damage your kidneys, so even if it helps, be careful.I hope this helps. The Pyridium does not work as well as it used to for me either. It usually takes 2 days before my "flare ups" stop being so awful. I am hoping this isnt IC as I cant stand it now and cant bear for it to get worse. I did have to take Advil last time because be bladder was so sore. About 2 years ago they looked into my bladder with a camera and saw open bleeding sores on the walls. They did not diagnose anything back then either. They want to do a CT scan, but I cant afford the co-pay. I had an ultrasound and it is negative for any problems. My Urologist has now written me off and says it is a gynological problem, even though all my test came back negative from my gynocologist. He gave me some vesicare samples and said " See you in a year for your follow-up". No one wants to do anything for me. It is very frustrating.

Have your gyno check for an ovarian cyst. I thought I had a bladder infection for a month and a half and it turned out to be a cyst on my ovary. It can mimic the symptoms of a uti without having any other symptoms or complications.
