  • An appropriate diet wholly depends on what type of stone you have. Have you passed any fragments? Has the doctor determined what kind of stone you have? Generally to prevent the formation of new stones, it is wise to save away from alcohol and caffeine as these are both diuretics. The idea is to keep your urine super dilute with a lot of water to keep the minerals that cause the stones in solution. If you have the most common type of stone, calcium oxalate, you want to stay away from things that are high in oxalates, like chocolate, black tea, green leafy vegetables, colas, etc.The next step is to find out what type of stone you have. Your urologist will want to do this. Next, he/she will want to do blood work and a 24 hour urine study to see if you have a mineral imbalance.Good luck and drink lots of water!Laura

  • My mother has the following symptons, blood in the urine (she said it is reaslly red) abdominal pain and a few weeks ago major back pain that went away after a week or so with no apparent cause. She is a very heavy smoker and drinker. Can this be kidney stones or something more, I am pretty worried. She is being treated by a MD. She is on a sulfur based antibiotic and is scheduled for a CT scan in a couple of days. Any thoughts?
