Hi,

I hope I posted this in the correct area. I was hoping someone could give me some links so I can read up on bladder damage and what can be done for it please!

My husband went to the ER last week and after being there for 7 hours, they finally found he had a bladder 3 times normal size and it was FULL. They had to put a catheter in and pulled out over a litter of urine. He had to keep the catheter in for a week and he just got it taken out yesterday morning by the urologist. The Dr. said he is worried about bladder damage and put him on the same meds that the ER doc. gave him the week before. We know this was all caused by enlarged prostate and I read up on all the different options for that, but now looking for bladder damage options just so I am informed in case there is any.

The urologist is having my husband come back in one month so they can go in with a camera and look at the bladder and prostate and see what damage has been done, so obviously he is not looking forward to it!

We are also very worried, even though he only had the catheter out for a day, he is having such a hard time going to the bathroom and we are both worried that the bladder will fill up again like before and we don't want to go through another miserable week like that EVER again!

So any places I can read up on what can be done if there is any damage to his bladder, I will be VERY appreciative!!! And will help us be prepared also.

Thank you so much!

Heidi

  • If he was still ahving trouble going after cath only in for such a short period, it is unlikey to be an6ything to do with the catheter. I anthing a cath left in would cause frequent urination as the bladder can shrink. If he has trouble going it is more likely because the bladder overstretched when it was so distended. this can the a number of weeks on free drainage (cath) to regain its size. I sustained bladder damage 8 years ago during a hysterectomy, th nerve was accidently severed I had a permanent catheter in for 4 years but as my bladder could not be fixed, I ad surgery 2 years ago, urethral removal and cystectomy (bladder removed) Now have a urostomy . the kidneys attached to a section of bowel which comes out through an abdominal opening into a bag which urine collects in. If there is any alternative I would not suggest it ! I have kdney infections not that cannot be stopped and have a central vein line in as I need iv antibiotics so frequently. the infections are now resistant to nearly all antis and my kidneys are becoming quite damaged. I am not telling you this to scare you, but if this is suggested get many opinions ! I am guessing urodynamics have been done?

Sign sad and confusedHi I had urodynamic studeis done which showed the bladder was non reponsive to filling, yet was stretching normally, ie it was not overstrretched and so non responsive, this suggested that as the bladder was filling the messag was not being transmitted to the brain to tell it to contract. I then consulted with a number of other urologists and then was examined by neurologists who diagnosed neurogenic bladder due to intrapelvic nerbe damage during the hyster. At the time of the hyster I did not have a catheter inserted before, during or after surgery, it is normal practice to have a catheter in during a hyster to keep the bladder empty and out of harms way. We can only assume that this was why it happenedthe important teller is how long after the hysterectomy the symptoms occurred?
