A typical UTI?

I've always had a weak bladder as long as I can remember, but last week I started needing the toilet more often and it burns when I go, and sometimes when I go barely anything comes out!
I'm new to this 'cystitis' and UTI stuff... but I was worried because I was reading if your symptons last longer than a week you should go and see a doctor. I bought those satchets you do over a 2 day course from boots as I don't have time to go to the doctor's at the moment as I'm heaped down with Uni work and exam revision. I'm hoping it just goes away of it's own accord?
I'm also quite scared of the thought of having an STD, although I've been with my current partner for over 6 months and I'm his first partner so not sure about STD's?
Any help is appreciated.
