2 weeks ago I had an upper wisdom tooth extracted - no issues, no pain, was a breeze. Now two weeks later half of my mouth and tongue keeps going numb. Feels just like novacaine. Is this normal?

  • This is normal. Sometimes nerves are grazed or hit when novacaine is injected. You may have felt some pain during the injection and may now be experiencing difficulty tasting food, feeling pressure with your tongue and determining temperature. It is normal for something like this to occur, it can go away 48 hrs after dental work or may take longer- up to a few weeks. The recovery process will depend upon your body's natural response mechanisms including your metabolism. If the problem does not go away after a few weeks, however, you may have a more serious problem. It is best to keep your dentist well- imformed about your progress within the first few weeks. If more attention is needed, which is rare but does happen, he/she will let you know and will probably refer you to a neurologist.

  • Just curious if anyone knows if it is normal to have the tongue on the side that is numb starts turning slightly white? I was told the numbness could stay for months or forever depending, but it has only been a week so far. I've noticed a slight change in color.
