19 yr old female, I was diagnosed as hyperthyroid/Graves Disease at 17 yrs, medication didn't work so May of 2006 I took radioactive iodine, now I am hypothyroid taking meds however, I am experiencing the eye swelling and irritation associated with Graves, even though I had radioactive treatment! Does anyone know why this is? It is driving me nuts, sometimes my eyes are so irritated I can't function normally (ex. drive)

  • I also had thyroid eye disease - Graves Disease over active thyroid to start with and then it went underactive and I am on thyroxine now for life. I never had radioactive iodine therapy I refused it. My eyes were in a really bad state watering, puffy, vision problems. I found wearing sun glasses a real help you feel so self consious when you look a mess. I even wore them in the supermarket because lights affected my eyes. To be honest and to go by my experience time is the only thing that will help and a lot of it so be patient try to learn to live with it. I was very lucky four years down the line now and only a bit of tell tale puffiness at the side and under the eyes mainly the right one. Not every one is so lucky though I've been told that. If scarring is really bad you can have surgery but not while the problem is on going - active. There are far worse things to live with so enjoy your life and just bite the bullet for now nothing lasts for ever and it will get better. I live in England and joined TED (thyroid eye disease) a three month magazine with a support network and where other TED sufferes can tell of their experiences and help give advice, also specialist thyroid doctors do write ups in it. See if you can find something similar and good health.
