I'm a 19 year old student and I've experienced sleeping problems for the past 4 years or so, however this is the worst it has ever been. At the moment I usually manage to get to sleep at around 5/6am, and then if I dont have to get up for class I can easily sleep until 2pm. Even if I do have to get up for class, say at 9am, I still cant sleep until 5am that night. This abnormal sleeping pattern is really inconveniant as it means that for the rest of the day I feel really tired and find it extremely hard to concentrate, I find it hard to participate in conversation and find myself saying strange things that don't always make sense, I have trouble processing information (e.g. reading that I have to do for uni), and I have terrible memory loss (I can't remember what I have done the night before, whether I have eaten that day, I ALWAYS forget what I was about to say in a conversation, etc.). I feel like this problem is affecting my personality - I feel less confident and I find it much harder to socialise now. I have some ongoing problems with depression however at the moment I am not in a period of depression. Does anyone else experience these symptoms? Does anyone know of anything that can help? I would really, really appreciate your suggestions.

  • i am experiencing very similar probelms myself, i am 21 years old, in my 3rd year of uni, n just cant concentrate on my work, i usually get to sleep around 2/3am ut can sleep till 3pm if not dragged out. i have tried some self help things that do work, but its difficult to keep them up. i tired just forcing myself up at 8am and after a few days i started to fall asleep easier and find it easier to get up, i think it was just forcing myself into a regular pattern. i also have strange eating patterns which i think affects slepp, maybe you are the same. i eat little thru the day but then very hungry later in the day, i can have full meals at 10/11pm, mainly because this is my dinner time, because of my wierd patterns. so i tried making myself have breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks, n trying to eat thru the day, and i found that at night i wasnt as hungry and felt more tired. i also think its a lot of what u eat too, like at night i eat bread/pasta and stuff like that, full of carbs and energy so it makes it difficult to sleep. i also have bouts of depression and despression makes sleeping difficult and makes me not want to wake up. perhaps for both of us it is a comination of all of these things. recently i have fallen off the wagon and gone back to sleeping till 2pm, doing no course work and making myself more depressed, so im going to try eating healthy, and regularly, forcing myself out of bed so that i can sleep at night and trying to get into a normal routine. i hope you can perhaps get some help from my experiences, i am not a doctor or anything, just someone who knows how you feel. i wish you the best of luck.Laura :)

  • Thankyou for replying :-) it's really nice to know that other people have this problem - and that i'm not just going crazy!!!Yes - i know exactly what you mean about the eating pattern - i am literally exactly the same - i go the whole day without even thinking about food, and then at night time im starving! thankyou for the advice, i'm going to do my best to try and get into a better eating/sleeping pattern just by forcing myself. I've also joined the gym, I've not been getting as much exercise lately (due to having quite a lot of work) and I figure if i physically tire my body out in the day that could help? i'll come back on here in a bit and let you know if it's helped.thanks again, hope your sleeping problems get better - i know how frustrating it can be cos it doesnt sound like a serious problem when you tell people but iv been so suprised by how much it can really change your body and the way you behave!x

  • Geez, I feel sorry for both of you. There can be a lot of reasons for not sleeping and depression is high on the list. I know because I have bi-polar with severe depression. I went for years always tired. I went for years always depressed for that matter. My dr. finally said enough is enough. For the last 15 years that I have been seeing you it's time to do something. You're always tired. He sent me to a psychatrist and psycologist and that helped extremly. But he also made an appointment for a sleep study. I have sleep apnea and narcolepsy. Try to set a schedule for that! But I still see my drs. and am on some meds and for the sleep disorders I am on a CPAP machine and heavy doses of adderall xr and provigil. for the narcolepsy. Most people don't take the dose I take but my sleep dr. says I am way aytipical (spelling). I said I know that's what they all say. But there was a time I could'nt sleep at all and that was because I had Graves disease. But that is whole other story. I would go to a dr or pysciatrist and maybe get on a low dose of antidepressants. It doesn't hurt to try. You'll probably have to try more than one because one doesn't fit all. Good Luck to you both and try to get some rest. ;)

  • Hi Everyone: I have not ever heard of microwave sensitivity. What is it all about. Wow, that's something new I never heard of. That's why I like these boards. You always learn different things. At least you find out something that is new. With all my diseases I'm starting to feel wacked out and maybe I shouldn't keep doing all the drugs I'm doing. One for this and one for that. And they are all heavy duty drugs. I pay over $300 a month for meds and that is with really good prescription insurance. My insurance is making a lot of money for me. I probably own halve of their company.:D
