About a week ago I got hives on my knee around where I had a very bad cut (probably should've had stitches, but we didn't know that) – I thought maybe it was an allergic reaction to the ointment I was using, so I stopped using it. The hives remained, but weren’t as itchy. Two days later, I tried another ointment – same thing happened. Overnight, the hives spread down my shin. So I stopped using the ointment. The next morning I woke up with the hives on my other leg, as well as up my thigh on the original leg. By the end of that day it had also spread to one of my arms. It is now covering both of my arms, both of my legs, my face, my neck, my ears, and my entire stomach below my bellybutton. I don’t know what it is.

I went to my doctor yesterday and he said it must just be an allergic reaction to something. He gave me a prescription strength anti-histamine and a topical cream and sent me on my way. I thought it would be over then, but as of right now (24+ hours after I started using the antihistamine and the topical cream) the hives (or whatever it is) have also spread to my forehead (before they were just on my checks), my hands, and some fingers. I can’t go out in public, and have to wear sweatshirts and jeans all the time when I do… in the middle of July!

Where I had a bandage covering my knee cut it's just one sea of red, as well as where the medical tape was. Everywhere else has these weird bumps...

They’re small, red, raised bumps, and when I scratch them they get bigger and form "blisters" on top. Some of them are in clusters of five-six-ish Whereas some are just scattered out on their own. They're worst on the leg they started on (100% covering my knee) and are more scattered everywhere else (with some clusters here and there) I am especially concerned that these are on my ears now because I just got a new piercing (cartilage) exactly two months ago & am deathly afraid of it getting some strange infection.

Please, if anyone has any ideas as to what this is, I’d love to know!
I’m sixteen, Canadian, a girl, relatively healthy, etc. I haven't changed anything about my diet, etc. recently (no new detergents, etc. I am on an anti-depressant (effexor) but have been for about a year now anyways) - no one else in my family is experiencing this. I do have seasonal allergies & an allergy to sulfur, but neither allergy has ever manifested itself like this.

It is not scabies, as I have had them in the past, & this looks and feels nothing like it. I have not slept in a bed that's not mine since March (Sleepovers with friends, etc. have always been at my house), & I am not sexually active.

I leave for France in a month and would like this cleared up by then… by the time school starts at the latest (I’m starting my Senior year and would to take my grad pictures without red hives on my face…) ANY input at all would make my day.

PLEASE HELP, I AM PANICKING HERE.

  • Do the small bumps blanch when you press on them? This is important. Take a drinking glass and press the side of it on the spot. If it turns white then red this is just a condition of the skin. If it stays red when pressed against then this is petechia. Could be lots of things... Henoch-Schonlein Purpura is one of them, meningococcal infection, leukemia, etc...

  • It's not meningococcal. Her extremities would be falling off by now if it was that. Memingococcal kills in a short period of time and if she had a rash this developed, within a very short timeframe she would be dead with no treatment.I would advise seeing a dermatologist... it definitely look like your body is either having an allergic reaction to something or an extreme sensitivityGoodluck

Just came across this posting!I also think it looks like folliculitus (sp?} My daughter had that and a staph infection. And before it was diagnosed we tried anti fungals etc. which made it worse/spread!

  • I would see an allergist and have them check your TRYPTASE level. This level can indicate a mast cell disorder, which can cause allergic type reactions, hives etc as seem in some forms of mastocytosis. I have mast cell problems right now - do not know why but my tryptase test was elevated and after cutting myself, I got hives from head to toe.See an allergist and you can take a Zyrtec - that will reduce the histamine in your blood, which should get rid of the hives. Good luck -feel well. I know this post is old but just so you know, wanted to post this. Try Benedryl with calamine, or another "drying" type anti-histamine for the skin. If you have a fever, take an internal allergy med. Given the spread & severity, you should become an expert at identifying this plant and look for it when you go to a bushy area. You can also get rhus toxican (sp?) at a health food store, best we've found is a poison ivy/oak formula sorry, can't remember the brand. Some topical anti-histamines work better than others, the secret is in the drying component. Wash your hands good after applying, I would also suggest having an alcohol based hand-sani with you and use often. I've found hand-sani to work great with those unidentifiable itches than come up.

  • The way putting a bandaid on it makes it spread happened to my friend's little boy. He had Impetigo, that looks like the pictures too. Check that out.
