I have chronic Idiopathic Urticaria. After $5000 worth of negative blood work I am left with very few treatment options. The one that looks most promising is a drug called Xolair, a once a month injection that will cost me over $1000 a month here in the U.S. (Yikes!) Anyone out there who has tried this or has been able to get their insurance to cover it (without a diagnosis of asthma)? I am looking into traveling to Canada to purchase if it is significantly less expensive there, but am having a hard time getting information.

  • Have you tried holistic approaches to your skin issues?DOM I have tried eliminating my exposure to anything unnatural as much as possible. Everything in my house from dish soap and floor cleaner to shampoo or lotion is fragrance free and as natural as possible. I eat a very healthy diet, no alcohol, no tobacco, etc...I was not on any medication before this all started 6 months ago so there were no drugs to eliminate. I've tried various combinations of antihistamines including zyrtec, allegra, singulair, zantac and even atarax. Nothing helped until they finally put me on Prednisone. On steroids my symptoms are about 10% of what they were and I feel almost normal again. However, I can hardly go more than 24 hours without the steroids (even after a very slow 7 week taper) or I start to itch like crazy again. The long term side effects on steroids are not good, and the stats on chronic idiopathic urticaria indicate I could have sxs for 2-10 years. What holistic advice do you have. I am willing to try anything that I think won't make me worse.

  • YES!I have asthma and CU. Last week I had my first shot of Xolair and this week I am down to 80% antihistamine I have been taking for months! It works for chronic hives, but I recommend getting checked out for h.pylori. I had it and it wrecked my stomach and gave me hives.I have chronic Idiopathic Urticaria. I don't have asthma either but somehow my doc got my insurance to cover it and also genetec has a program for co-pay assistance and I only have to pay about $9 a month. I'm super excited to see if it keeps working :)Good luck to all of us hive sufferers.
