Hello Everyone,

It's gross and embarrassing but I need to figure out what this is. I've been having this issue for a long time. It started about 6 years ago. I've always been a picker since I was little. I would pick my scabs and it would rescab until it healed. No problem. It may cause scarring but I didn't mind, there was nothing unusual about it. Then about 6 years ago my wounds started becoming open sores. They could start as acne or just a cut or scrap. Usually it starts as acne. I went to a dermatologist.......I was asked if I had someone I could talk to......I was told I was doing this to myself and I need to talk to someone. A doctor who never met me before that day and had no previous contact with me told me that this condition was caused by my picking. Well I was a picker for 25 years why would my wounds start turning into open sores and they never did before. There was a change. Something changed. The doctor made me feel like an idiot and I haven't talked to a doctor about it since. So the problem has remained. I use acne medicine and try to cover them up with band aids ....... NEOSPORIN.
Nothing seems to help really. I eventually heal but it sometimes takes weeks. I really wish that doctor would have taken it more seriously. At least test me for something.

I really let this go for a long time. I thought I just had to deal with it on my own. Then I noticed that my girlfriend started having something very similar going on with her skin. I've been tested for every STD under the sun. I really need to figure this out.
:(

  • It is probably MRSA or a staph infectionHey, I know it's been a few months since you posted but I just saw this. It looks like staph aureus or MRSA, which is a resistant strain. If that's the case you need to force yourself to stop picking because you will just spread the bacteria around. My daughter got it before she was a year old and doctors told me it was viral...don't worry, etc. Well, a few months of dealing with skin lesions and one day she spiked a fever that was through the roof. Within one day she was barely alive and totally unresponsive. A hospital blood test confirmed that MRSA had gotten into her bloodstream. Long story short, after 10 days in an isolated room she was cleared to go home. We have struggled with this for the past four years and I also have issues with it.I just recently made a trip to the hospital because I couldn't stop picking sores on my head and one evening my jaw and face started swelling and within 15 minutes I could hardly talk. I drove to the hospital and told them what it was. They prescribed the antibiotic which my strain is not yet resistant to, and by morning I was much better. It is so serious that the hospital keeps a record of it on my daughters and my files. When our wristbands print with the information, MRSA is typed all around the bottom so the doctors are aware.Do not take it lightly! And stop picking!!! Yes, it's possible because I still have to force myself not to but it is so worth it. If not for you then for your girlfriend so you don't spread your germs to her...even though it sounds like she is colonized already. Best of luck!

  • My wife and I have sores very similar to these. We don't know what they are either. They get very sore and sting when you touch the area of the sore. Even after they look healed, i wouldn't say that they've "healed right"... like the substance of the sore is still underneath a calloused kind of skin or scab. My wifes days are consumed with treating these sores (she has many) with anything you can think to try... Very frustrating.
