I got this rash last fall on the left arm and the neck. Subsided with moisturizers during the winter. It has flared up suddenly couple of weeks back and seems to be spreading. Went to the local clinic and the Physician Assistant said that it is Ring Worm and prescribed KETOCONAZOLE 2%. I have used it for two days but the itch and inflamation kept me up all night. I am not able to upload the pictures due to file size limitation. The rash on the arm looks more like a hive and the one on the neck looks like a mosquito bit gone bad. Neither has a distinctive raised Ring Worm like perimeter. The whole rash surface is raised, red and inflamed.

  • Six days later, the rash has spread about three times the area on the arm and the neck. I have been using the prescribed cream. Both the arm and the neck areas were swollen. There was a lot of inflamation and itch with some dull pain. It plateaued two days back and has started to taper. It seem that the cream causes the rash to ooze out some fluid and it forms a crust all over the rash. I wipe it clean with napkin soaked in warm water and put another layer of cream on it - couple of times daily. It has been a painful experience. Still not sure what caused it. But seems like it was diagnosed correctly as Ring Worm. However, the charecterstic ring with a clear center never formed. Will keep you posted with the progress. The Physician Assistant told me that it would take 6-8 weeks to clear this fungal infection.

  • Go see a dermatologist and don't mess with a physician's assistant if it is getting worse. It could be shingles since you are experiencing pain. An antiviral would be needed, along with pain meds...if it is spreading, then you don't have a correct diagnosis. It could also be scabies. Or anything, basically.

  • thank you much for the reply. I have a dermatology appt for July14th. Couldnt get an earlier appt. Will try calling the clinic every day to see if they can accomodate me in case there are any cancellations. Not sure if this is worth an ER trip.
