Purple hands/arms in cold, red hands in heat

I'm 16 years old and I'm pretty pale. It's been a while till now that I've finally been looking into why my hands, arms, legs and feet are this way.

When it is cold, my hands turn a very noticeable purple color, and I can see faint white circles but they aren't bumps or anything. This is mostly in my hands but extend up close near my elbows. I've never really checked my feet or legs but I can recall them turning a similar color.

When is it hot, my hands and feet turn a bright red. It is very noticeable and kids always think my hands and arms are sunburned. I just lie to them that they are, but I know they aren't.

I was seeking advice what I should do, what kind of specialist I should see if it is even needed. I finally became curious tonight and really wanted to find out what is wrong, so I'm seeking advice here.

I always feel tired during the day, I exercise and work out regularly. I do not know if this is related or not. If you need to know anything else please ask! :)

Thank you.

  • I have this exact problem. People always say, "Man are you sunburned!" when I know it isn't sunburn. The same thing you described with the cold happens to me also. I mainly notice it on the outside of my arm. This is very annoying and it would be great to know what is causing this.

  • Okay, I have the same thing. My dermatologist says that it is not a major problem, it's due to my pale skin. He says that my skin is almost translucent and you can see the blood through it and the blood is absorbing something. There is a lotion that will help but it is difficult to cure and you will probably have it for the rest of your life. You can get the lotion at wal-mart. it's called AmLactin, just ask for it in the pharmacy. I think its like 10-21 dollars, I get the cream because it works better. you can get it on amazon, too. you should try using the lotion and using a self tanner, too. It will ad more pigmentation to your skin so the purple/redness isn't as noticeable. hope this helps :)

  • My three year old daught has something that sounds very similar and she has had this problem since she was born. Her hands , legs and feet turn bright sunburn red when it is hot like also when she gets out of the tub her face just turns so pale and her hands and feet are bright red and kinda seem swelled. and in the winter time they turn purple and her hands legs and feet are freezing. i dont think this is normal and it may be a bit different but if anyone has some idea please let me know. we have had a few different diagnosis of what it could be but none were it she has been to a few different doctors needless to say we are stilling waiting for an answer.

I have it. My mom has it. In the winter my hands and feet get so cold. They turn purple, sometimes even a yellow white color and get hard to move if it gets too cold. My mom in the winter gets sores on her feet because of it. In hot weather my hands and feet are SO bright red and feel just odd. Almost tingly. So if you think this is a possibility get it checked. It isn't a big deal unless it gets out of control.
