Pain and swelling on my upper butt/lower back

I have some nagging pain in my lower back/upper butt, slightly under my tailbone. I can't sit in certain ways comfortably and when I sleep on my back it hurts terribly. I managed to inspect the area in the mirror and what I saw was some swelling and redness in the area. There was no bleeding or any kind of fluids or open skin, just swelling and redness, and a little bit of bruise-looking purple color around the redness. I had the same thing about 3 years ago, and it went away after a week or two. I've had this for about 3 days and have no reason to believe it won't go away again, but I really would love to know what it is in any case. Thanks in advance!

  • Check the wikipedia definition of Pilonidal Sinus, or Pilonidal Abcess, and see if that sounds familiar. I have just been through the same thing.
