just diagnosed with hypothyroidism today, and lichen sclerosis last year. Since lichen sclerosis is a rare disease, wondering if there is any correlation between that and hypothyroidism, and if anyone else has both?

  • this year i have been diagnosed with hyporthyroidism and started levothyroxine in april. approximately two months ago i was diagnosed with lichen sclerosis and started cortisone cream treatment. it seems to be helping, but i am getting flair ups after any sexual intercourse. i am very frustrated. i have read that both diseases are autoimmune related. and that many people do have both. do you have any suggestions as far as treating the lichen sclerosis?

I was diagnosed with hypothyroid several years ago and take a large dose of thyroid daily. Last year I was diagnosed with lichens sclerosis, which is spread over my entire trunk area, including vulva, abdomen, chest, back and shoulders primarily, although I have a few white spots on my arms and hands. My dermatologist stated that people with lichens sclerosis also often have hypothyroidism, but not visa versa. There is thought to be a connection. I also have arthritis, another autoimmune disease. In researching the web, some natural products suggesed that may help lichens sclerosus are Multivitamins, Folic Acid 1600 mcg, Alpha lipoic acid, green tea extract, CoQ10 and flaxseed oil. I am already taking a good multivitamin with the following 3 substances in it to support my immune system. I may try adding CoQ10 and flaxseed oil to my daily cocktail to see if it helps. Since starting on the vitamins, I was able to lower my thyroid dosage last year after my annual blood test.

  • I was diagnosed with hypothyroidism in April of this year and lichen sclerosis today. I also have a diagnosis for lupus (mild) dating back to 1997 for which I have not been using medication. I had breast implants in 1992, so I can't help but wonder if all of my autoimmune issues started there as there is no history of this at all in my family.

  • I too have both diagnosis--- hypo thyroidism diagnosed 6 years ago now lichen sclerosis todayI also have both hypothyroidism and lichen sclerosus (and very mild psoriasis). I think they are all auto-immune diseases and I've seen articles that say they are often found together in the same person. Hang in there - the topical cortisone really helps soothe the inflammation, itching and pain. It never really goes away completely, but it is much, much better. Good luck.

  • I received a hypothyroid diagnosis nearly 20 years ago, lichen sclerosis today. My brother has Hashimoto's Disease (auto-immune thyroid disease). I'm going to the GYN and an Endocrinologist... soon... Nice to know there are others out there.

Symptoms started in 2008 - after a 40 mile bike ride when my seat was too high and I had soreness in the vulvar region. I am wondering if breast implants or damage to the vulvar area due to bike seat pressure caused damage and allowed lichen sclerosus to develop.

I have had lichen sclerosus for over 40 years and was diagnosed with thyroid disease about 6 years ago. Last night I found out my 42 year old son has recently developed the white patches all over his body (much worse than mine, which is confined to my genital and rectal area) and he has had hypothyroidism since he was 13!
