Hi I have been suffering from this rash for a few years now but it seems to be getting worse and I would just love to know what it is so I might be able to do something about it or If anyone also suffers fom the same symptoms you may have some ideas/remedies etc I could try. I am getting married in 8 weeks and I know the day will be emotional stressfull and I just dont want to be walking down the isle with big red blotchy patches!
Any time I get emotional I get a big oval shape blotchy red rash on both my upper arms and all over my upper chest. My ears go burning red and my face goes blotchy red on the sides.
It also occurs if I drink alcohole in the exact same areas and I dont have to drink much for it to occur.
The areas affected are really hot to touch and I need to cool myself down with water etc.
It usually goes away in about 20mins although the more I think about it the worse it gets!
It is extremely noticable and everyone comments "Oh whats wrong with your arm" "your all red!!" etc etc very embarasing
Is there anything I can do to help this????
I seem to definately be afected by heat as Hot showers and standing in the sun for a period tend to make my legs blotch and a bit itchy but my main concern is definately the bright red upper body rash!
Thanks so much in advance......

Now, on to your rash....You have a dermatologic condition known as cholinergic urticaria. This condition is definitely a nuisance but fortunately, is not a serious health problem.Cholinergic urticaria manifests when your body releases histamines as a response to heat exposure (hot shower, sun exposure, etc.), stress/anxiety (getting emotional, upcoming wedding), and sometimes strenuous exercise. The release of these histamines is what causes the blotchy hives (urticaria). There are several things you can do to minimize (and maybe even prevent) outbreaks of cholinergic urticaria. Watch your sun exposure, perhaps turn the shower a bit cooler, and try to decrease your stress level. Measures such as deep breathing exercises, progressive muscle relaxation, and visualization are all helpful in decreasing stress/anxiety. There is a lot of info on these measures online. The other component that can be beneficial in addressing outbreaks is medication. Antihistamines such as diphenhydramine hydrochloride (Benadryl) and hydroxyzine (Atarax, Vistaril) are generally effective in decreasing hives and can also be used prophylactically to help prevent outbreaks. One caution regarding antihistamine use: a very common side effect is drowsiness. If you plan a trial of antihistamine medication, don't wait until your wedding day! You should first try an antihistamine on a day when you: 1.) don't have to work, 2.) don't have to drive, and 3.) aren't scheduled to be married! Seriously, though...you DO want to know just how this type of medication is going to affect you re: side effects.Again, early congratulations. I hope you resolve your situation with hives as fully as possible.Be well! John

  • hey, I am in the exact same boat. I am getting married soon and the only thing I can think about is the knowledge that I will undoubtedly break out in the rash. I've had it for years, but after going through puberty it has spread from just my chest to my ears, neck, face, chest and arms. It is red and blotchy. I get it when nervous, stressed, embarassed (which since I have social anxiety is always when out etc) and when too hot. I don't want to have to cover up on my wedding day and wear lots of makeup to hide a red face. I used to think I was a freak and the only one who went through this. I always know when something makes my heart beat fast that I will start to go blotchy. The only thing that has ever worked is removing the stimulus that makes me go red, but that often means avoidng talking to people to avoid nervousness etc, but things like a hot day/room, or taking an exam can't be avoided. I would love to be rid of this thing...im 22 and ive been dealing with this for 11 years and would hate to have this for the rest of my life.

It's really amazing how stress/anxiety can cause such physiological responses in the body. All that I suggested to Shell2009 above would apply equally to you. Some people who are prone to cholinergic urticaria outbreaks remain so indefinitely...some others will have fewer and fewer outbreaks as they get older...and some others still...lucky ones who are able to develop good skills to head-off stress may be outbreak free. The use of antihistamine medications PRIOR to engaging in what you know will be high anxiety social situations can be very effective. Antihistamine medication effect varies from person to person so it's not always going to be the answer for everyone. I would certainly give them a try, though.Hope you have a "blotch-free" wedding day!Regards,John

I am a daibetic taking drugs including for cholesterol; recently after a trip to India it got reall worse with redrash and itching at the temples , armpits arms and legs and buttocks and it comes on 3 times a day after meals and twice at night; it was ***l day and night. All the skin creams and drugs from the Doc only have it coming up in different places. Ice pak day and night and antistamie tablets help. This is the good news as I have run out of options, I decided to go to a Chinese Herbelist and Acupuncturist. After 10 days with 4 lots of Acupuncture, herbal tablets and cream, I had my 2 best nights without itching and 2 days of bliss; The red marks and itching is nearly gone .Worry and stress can also bring it on. By the way I am also terribly allergic to alchohol so I advoid it completely. The Chinese heal by treating and balacing the whole internal system with natural herbs to get rid of abnormal heat and toxins thereby eliminating the external problem for good. Its worth giving it a try .Also eat healthy with lots of vegies and fruit and less red meat. Avoid sun and less hot showers with neutral ph soaps.I hope to be well rid of it in 10 days time as I will be on an 8hours flight to Singapore to attend a wedding icluding a holiday. Good luck David

  • Try using propanolol. Its a beta blocker and works for me everytime , I dont use it everyday but if a big event is coming up i take 60-80mg about half an hour before and i find it lasts about 3-4 hours with no red blotching!

  • I have been suffering from a rash on my neck/chest when I get nervous for years. I have been hiding under scarves and turtle necks at meetings. I'm not big into medication but tired Xanax and antihistamines as needed but they didn't work for me. Dermablend leg and body makeup has been a life changer so far! I just started using it and I checked in the mirror immediately after my meeting, when I could feel the rash was there due to heat and adrenaline, and no rash was visible! I start with the green concealer, follow with two coats of leg and body cover, and then use the setting powder. I only wear it on days that I know have an event where I'll be nervous or will be the center of attentions so unfortunately it doesn't work for those moments of surprise when I get the rash. I wish I would have known about this years ago, especially for my wedding!
