Chances of unusual mole being melanoma?

Hey :)

I'm a 16 year old and I've always had a birthmark on the back of my left thigh, about a quarter of an inch in diameter. It's always been pretty raised, but it's never exposed to the sun as when I'm on holiday my shorts always cover it. I've never really worried or checked it that often, but when I noticed some black hairs I thought looked particularly ugly, I had a look. It seemed a little patchy with my speckles of my normal skin-tone in amongst the brown of the mole.

I plan to go to my doctor as soon as I can, but I'd like to know what are the chances of it being a melanoma? I'm really really worried and I'd just like some information.

  • What you described doesn't sound like melanoma to me but please get it checked just in case. You are good to be checking moles, however. Any change should always be checked. My relative had skin cancer and because he caught it immediately he was cured.
