Can anyone shed some light on this swelling?

My brother, who has no access to the web, has noticed a swelling, or raised area on the side of his head above the eye-line but about halfway between the ear and the eye ( if that makes sense) This swelling is almost circular with an approximate 25- 30mm diameter and the surface has a rough, almost like sandpaper texture to it. It is painful when touched and he has been getting searing head aches that he feels are connected although not located at the point of the swelling.

He has made an appointment with his GP but he has to wait a week for it. I would appreciate any insight that you guys may be able to offer because i have searched extensively elsewhere and come up with very little in terms of identical symptoms.

Many thanks
