I am 25 yrs old and I have been experiencing pain before and after my period that are just as bad as the cramps that I have during my period. I have also been noticing a blood tinged discharge and at times it is thick and I can feel it coming out. I have not noticed any unusual odor just the cramping and discharge. I told my gyno about it and he said I might have an infection so he prescribed me Flagyl. I have finished my course of that about 1.5 weeks ago and the same thing is still happening. I have been off my period for about 4 days and I can't figure out what is going on?? Has anyone experienced this or is familiar with what is going on any advice or information would be gratefully appreciated!!

  • Uggh! Why must docs always throw toxic meds when they don't have a clear idea of what is going on?! Be careful with FLagyl and be sure to take a good quality probiotic to help rebuild your intestinal flora. Flagyl can lead to candida overload, which can worsen your current symptoms. I suggest you find another gyno who will better listen to you. I suggest you get a vaginal ultrasound to rule out ovarian cysts. It also sounds like you could have endometriosis. This is quite hard to diagnose, and you may want to find someone who has experience in treating this. Acupuncture and Chinese herbal medicine is very effective for menstrual disorders, including endo. I think it would really help if you can find someone who is also a nationally certified Chinese herbalist (NCCAOM is the certifying board). I have treated many patients with severe cramping and abnormal bleeding, and most have shown incredible improvement. But get an ultrasound done, and before you let a doc tell you you have an infection which requires antibiotics, make sure they have clear signs and have done a pap or other test which shows infection. I really feel sometimes docs just want to take an easy out and prescribe antibiotics, but over time this can cause much further harm if there is no real need for it! Best wishesDOM

  • Thanx DOM for your reply. I sent my posting prematurally because I wanted to add a couple of things also. I am scheduled to have a hysterectomy because after I had my son my uterus dropped so bad that during examination it was felt less than an inch from the opening. I haven't had sex with my fiancee whom I have been with for 4 yrs for almost 2 yrs because intercourse is so painful. The doc did mention something about having endometriosis and I was wondering that if I have that or ovarian cysts if that will be able to be identified during the hysterectomy that I am having in 5 days??
