Hello.

I am Medical coder. I would like to know the difference between Threatened abortion and Missed abortion. What if the Physician in his impression marks both condition, which condition should we consider for coding.

  • Threatened abortion is the "threat" of a pending abortion, with vaginal bleeding, etc. presenting. A missed abortion is a dead fetus in the uterus for some time (usually >a month or two). Obviously, they are no-where near the same.

You could have symptoms such as bleeding, spotting, cramping. Where a missed abortion is when you miscarry but the products of conception are still in the uterus, but there were no symptoms. I think that you should ask the doctor because they are two different things, either the patient has miscarried or they haven't!!!
