Penis Swelling

This is now the third day of my penis being moderately swollen. I started 2 days ago as best I can tell, and isn't painful that I can tell. I recently had bilateral inguinal hernia repair (Sept. 17th) and probably started masturbating too soon afterwards. I am 27. The base of my penis feels a little bruised, but not horribly painful. The doctors and surgeon said that swelling "in the area" is normal, but I don't know why it would suddenly start. Is it possible that I am getting an increase in blood flow to the area now that I am healing after the surgery, and that the "swelling" is actually an increase in natural size due to this? Mind you, the skin on my penis was always "tanned" looking, and with the swelling appears to be a more "natural" skin tone when compared to the rest of my body. The swelling is present when flacid and erect, and the swollen area itself isn't painful at all (only the base of my penis, which has incision sites very close to it). Is this something I should be very worried about, or is it a fairly common thing to see after a semi-severe (10 pounds) bilateral inguinal hernia repair? I've read of phimosis, paraphimosis, and balanitis, but it doesn't exhibit but one of the common symptoms: swelling. The swelling is similar in APPEARANCE to the image of phimosis available at wikimedia commons description of phimosis... but I've been very cleanly, am circumsized, and don't exhibit the pain or restriction of phimosis.
I have decided to cease masturbation/intercourse until I find out more about the situation. Please advise me, so that my mind may rest at ease. Thank you!

  • You better see a doctor, STAT...you may have caused some damage after your recent surgery.Well, something I don't want to rule out is that my now more "free" parts are a bit stressed under their own mobility. Also, is it possible that this "swelling" is just increased blood flow? The base of my penis feels a bit bruised... like if it had been pulled a little hard, which isn't the case at all. The swelling doesn't seem to have increased, so it doesn't seem to be an ongoing thing. However, I also changed to more snug fitting briefs than what I was wearing before. My penis has had slightly darker skin than the surrounding area. Now that the "swelling" is present, the skin color is more closely matching. I'm not sure if that has any bearing on anything. Would a mild (non-excretion) infection cause swelling like that?I don't really have the money to go to the doctor, and I can't really afford a hospital bill.

  • Talk with the surgeon's nurse and see what information they give you over the phone. A follow up visit may have been a part of the fee already paid.
